The Puritan's Daughter Sequel to Creole and Puritan; a Character Romance of Two Sections (Classic Reprint)

Thomas Cooper De Leon
Excerpt from The Puritan's Daughter: Sequel to "Creole and Puritan"; A Character Romance of Two Sections This is entirely true to the theme. It is so natural, so logical, so inevitable as to pass unchallenged by the acutest Southern sensibility. In his allegiance to his art Mr. De Leon sacrifices no part of his loyalty to his blood and birth. The moral of his writing is entirely just and Sound. But the fact remains - and it is this which is noteworthy - that our interest centers in a Northern rather than in a Southern group; and that. As for the author, we lose all trace of his identity. The accident of art

Lotringer, Sylvère,Virilio, Paul
There is a catastrophe within contemporary art. What I call the "optically correct" is at stake. The vision machine and the motor have triggered it, but the visual arts haven't learned from it. Instead, they've masked this failure with commercial success. This "accident" is provoking a reversal of values. In my view, this is positive: the accident reveals something important we would not otherwise know how to perceive.—Paul Virilio, The Accident of Art Urbanist and technological theorist Paul Virilio trained as a painter, studying under Henri Matisse, Georges Braque, Bazaine and de Stael. In The Accident of Art, his third extended conversation with Sylvère Lotringer, Virilio addresses the situation of art within technological society for the first time. This book completes a collaborative trilogy the two began in 1982 with Pure War and continued with Crepuscular Dawn, their 2002 work on architecture and biotechnology. In The Accident of Art, Virilio and Lotringer argue that a direct relation exists between war trauma and art. Why has art failed to reinvent itself in the face of technology, unlike performing art? Why has art simply retreated into painting, or surrendered to digital technology? Accidents, Virilio claims, can free us from speed's inertia. As technological catastrophes, accidents are inventions in their own right.

The global nonlinear stability of the Minkowski space

Christodoulou, Demetrios,Klainerman, Sergiu
The aim of this work is to provide a proof of the nonlinear gravitational stability of the Minkowski space-time. More precisely, the book offers a constructive proof of global, smooth solutions to the Einstein Vacuum Equations, which look, in the large, like the Minkowski space-time. In particular, these solutions are free of black holes and singularities. The work contains a detailed description of the sense in which these solutions are close to the Minkowski space-time, in all directions. It thus provides the mathematical framework in which we can give a rigorous derivation of the laws of gravitation proposed by Bondi. Moreover, it establishes other important conclusions concerning the nonlinear character of gravitational radiation. The authors obtain their solutions as dynamic developments of all initial data sets, which are close, in a precise manner, to the flat initial data set corresponding to the Minkowski space-time. They thus establish the global dynamic stability of the latter. Originally published in 1994. Doctors of Philosophy: Play

Spark, Muriel
Excerpt from Doctors of Philosophy: A Play Catherine. I thought she might like to look at the water as it isn't term-time. I quite see that during term a thing like the Regent's Canal would be an idea to Leonora, it would be a geographical and historical and sociological idea, but during vacation I do think Leonora ought to take a look at reality. The Lumonics Theater The Art of Mel & Dorothy Tanner

Mel Tanner,Dorothy Tanner
In 1969 Mel Tanner had an aesthetic breakthrough, and both he and his wife Dorothy began to construct a theater where they could combine all their work with sculpture and painting into a form of visual music. The result of that inspiration was the Lumonics Theater. The performance space they built was composed of 50 sculptures, a battery of projectors, lasers, and the spontaneous creativity that transforms technology into virtuoso performance art. The entire performance was designed so that no two are alike. This book describes the more than thirty year history and development of their theater from its beginnings in the 1960s through its final days in 2003.

Approaches to the history of written culture: a world inscribed

Martyn Lyons,Rita Marquilhas
This book investigates the history of writing as a cultural practice in a variety of contexts and periods. It analyses the rituals and practices determining intimate or 'ordinary' writing as well as bureaucratic and religious writing. From the inscribed images of 'pre-literate' societies, to the democratization of writing in the modern era, access to writing technology and its public and private uses are examined. In ten studies, presented by leading historians of scribal culture from seven countries, the book investigates the uses of writing in non-alphabetical as well as alphabetical script, in societies ranging from Native America and ancient Korea to modern Europe. The authors emphasise the material characteristics of writing, and in so doing they pose questions about the definition of writing itself. Drawing on expertise in various disciplines, they give an up-to-date account of the current state of knowledge in a field at the forefront of 'Book History'.

The Rulers of Belgian Africa, 1884-1914

Lewis Henry Gann
In this comprehensive picture of Belgian colonialism in the Congo, Lewis Gann and Peter Duignan trace the formation of the colonial state that became Zaire, considering it in the light of colonial experience in other African territories. Whereas most studies have focused on the conquest and subjugation of the African population, this study probes the colonial apparatus itself, investigating the attitudes and behavior of the civil servants and soldiers who built the empire. The engineers

Lederer, Katy
In her long-anticipated fourth collection, The Engineers , Katy Lederer draws on the newfangled languages of reproductive technology, genetic engineering, and global warming to ask the age-old questions: What is "the self"? What is "the other"? And how to reproduce "one's self"? In poems that are both lyrical and playfully autobiographical, Lederer imagines form as a kind of genetics, synthesizing lines out of a rigorous constraint. Things can go wrong. The body--or poem--malfunctions, evacuating crucial parts of itself (miscarriage), or growing too aggressively or quickly (cancer). The body--or poem--attacks or even eats itself (autoimmune dysfunction; autophagy). Written almost entirely in the choral "we," the poems move among the perspectives of the bewildered parent, the unborn child, and the inscrutable God who looks down upon the human world. In a post-Roe landscape, the poems complicate and ultimately refashion our pre-conceived notions of the self--and of life. Radical, uncanny, and stunningly original, The Engineers takes us on a journey to a place we've never been, but that is hauntingly familiar.

Comparing cultural policy: a study of Japan and the United States

Joyce Zemans,Archie Kleingartner
There is among many nations a growing awareness that the arts and culture have an important role to play in forming the image that nations hold of themselves and that they convey in the international arena. At the same time, increased pressure on the public purse, new trade environments, and the revolution in communications technology are forcing the reexamination of cultural policy objectives and strategies for achieving those objectives in countries throughout the world. This book, based on the research and expertise of practitioners and scholars in the field of cultural policy, provides a broadly based cross-cultural analysis of policy in two countries with very different cultural traditions. The authors move beyond cultural boundaries to define 'art' and 'culture,' explore the role of cultural policies in a nation's cultural development, and evaluate policy effectiveness and relevance. Case studies of organizations in art, music, dance, and drama, in both the United States and Japan, examine the elements that contribute to effective arts management and policy-making. Arts managers, cultural policy-makers, researchers, practitioners, and educators will find this an excellent resource that provides valuable teaching materials in the field of cultural policy and facilitates cross-cultural learning about arts management.

A Short History of the Church of Christ From the Close of the Sacred Narrative to Our Own Times (Classic Reprint)

John Fry
Excerpt from A Short History of the Church of Christ: From the Close of the Sacred Narrative to Our Own Times TH short memorials of Ecclesiastical History were, a considerable time since, announced as ready for pub lication. I have to offer an apology, but too valid, ' for the delay. The last sheet had just gone to the press, when the whole was consumed by fire; and, as the manuscript was at that time in the printer's hand, only a remnant of the Work could, with the ut most diligence, be recovered from the ruins. Know this: today's most interesting and important scientific ideas, discoveries, and developments

Brockman, John
"Today's most visionary thinkers reveal the cutting-edge scientific ideas and breakthroughs you must understand. Scientific developments radically change and enlighten our understanding of the world--whether it's advances in technology and medical research or the latest revelations of neuroscience, psychology, physics, economics, anthropology, climatology, or genetics. And yet amid the flood of information today, it's often difficult to recognize the truly revolutionary ideas that will have lasting impact. In the spirit of identifying the most significant new theories and discoveries, John Brockman, publisher of Edge.org ("The world's smartest website"--The Guardian), asked 198 of the finest minds What do you consider the most interesting recent scientific news? What makes it important? SpecLab: digital aesthetics and projects in speculative computing

Drucker, Johanna
Nearly a decade ago, Johanna Drucker cofounded the University of Virginia’s SpecLab, a digital humanities laboratory dedicated to risky projects with serious aims. In SpecLab she explores the implications of these radical efforts to use critical practices and aesthetic principles against the authority of technology based on analytic models of knowledge. Inspired by the imaginative frontiers of graphic arts and experimental literature and the technical possibilities of computation and information management, the projects Drucker engages range from Subjective Meteorology to Artists’ Books Online to the as yet unrealized ’Patacritical Demon, an interactive tool for exposing the structures that underlie our interpretations of text. Illuminating the kind of future such experiments could enable, SpecLab functions as more than a set of case studies at the intersection of computers and humanistic inquiry. It also exemplifies Drucker’s contention that humanists must play a role in designing models of knowledge for the digital age—models that will determine how our culture will function in years to come.
