Medieval English travel: a critical anthology

Anthony Bale,Sebastian Sobecki
Medieval English Travel: A Critical Anthology' is a comprehensive volume that consists of three sections: concise introductory essays written by leading specialists; an anthology of important and less well-known texts, grouped by destination; and a selection of supporting bibliographies organised by type of voyage. This anthology presents some texts for the first time in a modern edition. The first section consists of six companion essays on 'Places, Real and Imagined', 'Maps the Organisation of Space', 'Encounters', 'Languages and Codes', 'Trade and Exchange', and 'Politics and Diplomacy'. The organising principle for the anthology is one of expansive geography. Starting with local English narratives, the section moves to France, en-route destinations, the Holy Land, and the Far East. In total, the anthology contains 26 texts or extracts, including new editions of Floris & Blancheflour, The Stacions of Rome, The Libelle of Englyshe Polycye, and Chaucer's Squire's Tale, in addition to less familiar texts, such as Osbern Bokenham's Mappula Angliae, John Kay's Siege of Rhodes 1480, and Richard Torkington's Diaries of Englysshe Travell. The supporting bibliographies, in turn, take a functional approach to travel, and support the texts by elucidating contexts for travel and travellers in five areas: 'commercial voyages', 'diplomatic and military travel', 'maps, rutters, and charts', 'practical needs', and 'religious voyages'

Melodies unheard: essays on the mysteries of poetry

Hecht, Anthony
In these essays, acclaimed poet and critic Anthony Hecht explores the ways in which poetry can be read and the many pleasures it affords. Ranging from Shakespeare's sonnets to Eliot, Frost, and Simic, Melodies Unheard offers profound insight into poetic form, meter, rhyme, and meaning--into the mysteries of poetry itself. Anthony Hecht's vast knowledge of literature and his gift for mesmerizing argument are both amply present in Melodies Unheard. Whether defending the sestina against accusations of boredom and dolefulness or examining the structure of Shakespeare's sonnets or unraveling some of the complexity of Moby-Dick, these essays are models of civility, candor, and grace. I know of no other poet, certainly none of Anthony Hecht's stature, who sheds as much light on the intricacies and hidden designs of poems and who does it with such style.--Mark Strand Anthony Hecht declares himself 'a poet first and only secondarily a critic, ' but Melodies Unheard proves again that he is a master in both trades. His discourse on such subjects as rhyme, the sestina, and 'the music of forms' is both scholarly and delightful; his articles on individual poets are finely done; and best of al

A general theory of equilibrium selection in games

Harsanyi, John C.
The authors, two of the most prominent game theorists of this generation, havedevoted a number of years to the development of the theory presented here, and to its economicapplications. They propose rational criteria for selecting one particular uniformly perfectequilibrium point as the solution of any noncooperative game. And, because any cooperative game canbe remodelled as a noncooperative bargaining game, their theory defines a one-point solution for anycooperative game as well.By providing solutions - based on the same principles of rational behavior- for all classes of games, both cooperative and noncooperative, both those with complete and withincomplete information, Harsanyi and Selten's approach achieves a remarkable degree of theoreticalunification for game theory as a whole and provides a deeper insight into the nature ofgame-theoretic rationality. The book applies this theory to a number of specific game classes, suchas unanimity games; bargaining with transaction costs; trade involving one seller and severalbuyers; two-person bargaining with incomplete information on one side, and on both sides. The lastchapter discusses the relationship of the authors' theory to other recently proposed solutionconcepts, particularly the Kohberg-Mertens stability theory.John C. Harsanyi is Flood ResearchProfessor in Business Administration and Professor of Economics, University of California, Berkeley.Reinhard Selten is Professor of Economics Institute of Social and Economic Sciences: University ofBonn, Federal Republic of Germany.
