On the Kinetic Theory of Steady Gas Flows

Lawrence Sirovich
"On the Kinetic Theory of Steady Gas Flows" explores the theoretical underpinnings of gas dynamics through the lens of kinetic theory. This work delves into the mathematical and physical principles governing the behavior of gases in motion, offering insights into steady-state flows. It is invaluable for researchers and students in physics, engineering, and applied mathematics interested in a rigorous treatment of gas dynamics from a kinetic perspective. Third Workshop on Grand Unification University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill April 15–17, 1982

P.H. Frampton,S.L. Glashow,H. Van Dam
This workshop held at the University of North Carolina was in the series which started with meetings in the University of New Hampshire (April 1980) and the University of Michigan (April 1981). More than one hundred participants congregated in the Carolina Inn in April 1982 to discuss the status of grand unified theories and their connection to experiment. The spring foliage of Chapel Hill provided a beautiful back-drop to this Third Workshop on Grand Unification. As mentioned in the first talk herein, these three workshops have heard of indications, respectively, of neutrino oscillations, proton decay and a magnetic monopole. Since all three experimental reports remain unconfirmed, grand unifiers must wait expectantly and patiently. These proceedings preserve faithfully the ordering of the workshop talks which followed the tradition of alternation between theory and experiment. Only our introduction will segregate them. The experimental presentations mainly concerned proton decay and massive neutrinos. Four U.S. proton decay experiments were reported: the Brookhaven Irvine-Michigan experiment in the Morton Salt Mine at Fairport Harbor, Ohio was described by WILLIAM KROPP, and ROBERT MORSE represented the Harvard-Purdue-Wisconsin group in the Silver King Mine, Utah. The Homestake Mine, South Dakota and Soudan Mine, Minnesota, experiments were reported respectively by RICHARD STEINBERG and DAVID AYRES, the latter providing also a survey of future U.S. experiments.

The Evolution Problem in General Relativity

Klainerman, Sergiu,Nicolo, Francesco
The main goal of this work is to revisit the proof of the global stability of Minkowski space by D. Christodoulou and S. Klainerman, [Ch-KI]. We provide a new self-contained proof of the main part of that result, which concerns the full solution of the radiation problem in vacuum, for arbitrary asymptotically flat initial data sets. This can also be interpreted as a proof of the global stability of the external region of Schwarzschild spacetime. The proof, which is a significant modification of the arguments in [Ch-Kl], is based on a double null foliation of spacetime instead of the mixed null-maximal foliation used in [Ch-Kl]. This approach is more naturally adapted to the radiation features of the Einstein equations and leads to important technical simplifications. In the first chapter we review some basic notions of differential geometry that are sys tematically used in all the remaining chapters. We then introduce the Einstein equations and the initial data sets and discuss some of the basic features of the initial value problem in general relativity. We shall review, without proofs, well-established results concerning local and global existence and uniqueness and formulate our main result. The second chapter provides the technical motivation for the proof of our main theorem.

The Role of Mathematics in the Rise of Science

BOCHNER, Salomon.
The central theme of these essays is the nature and role of mathematics, its growth and spread, and its involvement with ever-wider areas of knowledge. The author attempts to determine the decisive and creative aspects of the abstractness" of mathematics which have made it the dominant intellectual force that it is. He frequently confronts the mathematics and physics of today with the mathematics and physics of the Greeks, which, however renowned, was not yet capable of this abstractness. Originally published in 1981. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These paperback editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback editions. Physikalisches Praktikum: Eine Sammlung Von UEbungsaufgaben Mit Einer Einfuhrung in Die Grundlagen Des Physikalischen Messens

A. Gro8en- und Einheitensysteme Westphal, Physik, 25./26. Auf!., §§ 2, 3; ferner: Die Grundlagen des physikalismen Begriffssystems. 1.

Dramatic Effect of Cross-correlations in Random Vibrations of Discrete Systems, Beams, Plates, and Shells

Isaac Elishakoff
This volume explains the dramatic effect of cross-correlations in forming the structural response of aircraft in turbulent excitation, ships in rough seas, cars on irregular roads, and other dynamic regimes. It brings into sharp focus the dramatic effect of cross correlations often neglected due to the analytical difficulty of their evaluation. Veteran author Professor Isaac Elishakoff illustrates how neglect of cross correlations could result in underestimation of the response by tens or hundreds of percentages the effect of the random vibrations of structures' main elements, including beams, plates, and shells. Clarifies the common misconception that natural frequencies of structures are well apart from each other; Illustrates that the interaction of associated modes in plates can dramatically alter the random response due to presence of coinciding frequencies; Demonstrates that natural frequencies in beams on elastic foundation, as well as cylindrical or spherical shells, might cluster together resulting in substantial percentage error if cross-correlations are ignored.

Walter Gilbert: Selected Works

Walter Gilbert
This book commemorates the eclectic intellectual life of scientist and artist Walter Gilbert. It presents all of his most influential works throughout his scientific career. His scientific explorations covered a broad spectrum of fields: theoretical physics; molecular biology, from finding messenger RNA to elucidating the regulation of the lac operon to understanding DNA replication; gene evolution and origin of life; genomics; bioinformatics; and beyond. He created widely used concepts such as 'Exon', 'Intron' and 'RNA World'. Eleven reflective essays by Gilbert are included for the first time, discussing both his scientific studies and anecdotes from his own life. These firsthand accounts record the historical and intellectual contexts for his most monumental scientific discoveries, including his Nobel Prize-winning sequencing method. Memorial chapters, contributed by Gilbert Laboratory alumni, describe the passion, ambition, and efforts of Gilbert and several generations of young scientists under his leadership. Finally, the book collects a few fine pieces of artwork created by Gilbert in recent years. It documents a life of genius and creativity that could inspire others for years to come.

Biological coherence and response to external stimuli

FROHLICH, HERBERT ED.
The existence of coherent excitations in active biological systems has been established in recent years. The present book aims at presenting a survey on the many features that such ex citations can exhibit. This does not mean that a "theory of biology" has been established but it implies that such a theory will make use of such excitations. It is hoped that the present book will help in this direction. The Constitution of Matter Modern Atomic and Electron Theories

Max Born
Excerpt from The Constitution of Matter Modern Atomic and Electron Theories It would also be out of place, since A. Sommerfeld has recently published a book, "Atomic Structure and Spectral Lines," translated by H. L. Brose (Methuen Co. & Ltd.), which deals comprehensively, yet simply, with the recent advances in the physical atomic theory. These essays are for those who have not time to. study the larger work of Sommerfeld. M. Born Frankfurt A.M., 20th April, 1920 Preface To The Second Edition The form of these essays precludes any extensive alterations. I have therefore had to confine myself to incorporating the most important of the recent advances, particularly Aston's work on isotopy in ordinary elements, Franck's spectroscopic determination of the electron-affinities of halogen atoms, and Knipping's measurements of the ionisation-energies of the hydrogen halides. For the rest I have only made minor alterations and additions to the references. Dr. R. Minkowski has kindly assisted me in reading the proofs. Theory of Functionals: And of Integral and Integro-Differential Equations

Volterra, Vito,Fantappiè, Luigi
"Theory of Functionals: And of Integral and Integro-Differential Equations" is a foundational treatise in the field of mathematical analysis, representing the culmination of Vito Volterra's pioneering research into the calculus of variations and the generalization of functions. As one of the most significant figures in late 19th and early 20th-century mathematics, Volterra introduces a systematic approach to functionals-functions that depend on other functions-providing a rigorous framework for what is now known as functional analysis. The work explores the properties of integral and integro-differential equations, detailing their development and their profound implications for both pure mathematics and mathematical physics. Volterra examines the transition from finite-dimensional space to infinite-dimensional space, offering insights into the behavior of systems where the current state depends on past history. Edited and expanded from his influential lectures, this volume serves as an essential resource for understanding the historical development of modern analysis. It remains a vital reference for mathematicians and physicists interested in the evolution of linear operators and the mathematical modeling of complex physical phenomena.
