Frank O. Gehry Guggenheim Museum Bilbao

Frank O. Gehry
No building was more anticipated than Frank Gehry's stunning new museum in Bilbao, an industrial city in the Basque Country of northern Spain. Philip Johnson, the dean of American architects, declared it "the greatest building of our time," while Sverre Fehn, winner of the 1997 Pritzker Architecture Prize, called the building "fantastic." Gehry's use of nontraditional materials and his sensitivity to the environments of his buildings is legendary; his method of envisioning a building through semiautomatic drawings and handmade models is little known, but provides an immediate entry into his creative process. This book celebrates the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao and details its design process, bringing to life one of Gehry's greatest achievements. Coosje van Bruggen, who has collaborated with Gehry on various architectural and art projects, documents the history of the Guggenheim Bilbao from conception through design and construction. With unique access to the architect and his studio, she uncovers scores of fascinating drawings and working photographs, published here for the first time.

Understanding Earth

Grotzinger, John,Jordan, Thomas H.,Press, Frank,Siever, Raymond
"Geology is as much about climate as it is about tectonics, and in this edition we describe the geologic processes that unite these historically separate fields. Our discussion of such core concepts as the rock cycle, metamorphism and exhumation, and landscape evolution help illustrate important links. Further, we consider the concept of geologic time and the historical development of Earth (and the other terrestrial plants) to be as important a process."--Preface.

Chess by Yourself

Fred Reinfeld
HAVE you ever wanted to play chess with the masters? Reinfeld shows you how. Now you can play against some of the world's greatest masters, in the privacy of your study with no annoying "kibitzers" around, and with no time limit to harry you An easily understood grading system shows you just where you stand in matching your skills against the masters. Chess by Yourself is similar to Solitaire Chess. The difference is that in Solitaire Chess the reader imagines himself to be playing the white pieces. The reader covers up the moves with a sheet of paper and then guesses White's next move and writes it down. Then, the reader moves down the sheet of paper revealing the next move that was actually played. The reader is then awarded points depending on whether the move he guessed was right or wrong, strong or weak. White always wins. In Chess by Yourself the reader is to go one step further, because he plays both sides of the board. He gets points for guessing both White's next move and then Black's next move. Either side may win. At the end of the game, the reader totals his score. Depending on how many points he got he is awarded a ranking of Master, Excellent, Good or Fair. The reader can also get extra credit by guessing follow-up moves in variations that were not actually played. The author, Fred Reinfeld, has selected ten games for this test. All are exciting sacrificial games. All ten games are deeply annotated with an explanation given for every move and points awarded for alternative moves that were not played.

How to Be a Winner at Checkers Basic Rules and Tested Techniques for Winning Play

Fred Reinfeld
Checkers is probably the world's best known board game. In America, more than 100 million people have played at least one game of checkers. In England, the game is known as Draughts. There are 150 varieties. In America, most African-Americans play Spanish checkers or "pool," which features flying kings. In Eastern Europe and Holland, checkers is played on a 10x10 board. In Canada, it is sometimes played on a 12x12 board. This book by Fred Reinfeld is concerned with Go As You Please or GAYP Standard American Checkers. The checkers tactics that add up to a winning game - from that shrewd opening to the last triumphant jump - are all revealed in this book by Fred Reinfeld. Mr. Reinfeld shows how the unsuspected complexity of checkers makes possible subtle strategies that you can turn to your advantage. With his usual clarity, Mr. Reinfeld demonstrates winning tactical play at each stage of the game. He depicts various standard openings (the Glasgow opening, the Souter opening, the Kelso group, etc.) and points out the traps that each affords. He describes the techniques of the mid game, including the "breeches" at the corner block, and numerous three-for-two and two-for-one shots. And he paces out the closing moves of the game - how to make the kill or how to gain a draw against the odds. Mr. Reinfeld's book enables you to enjoy checkers more than ever - both helping you understand the game and by making you a consistent winner.

Vice and Virtue in Everyday Life

Christina H. Sommers,Fred Sommers
A comprehensive and provocative collection of both classical and contemporary voices in perennial ethical debates, VICE AND VIRTUE has established itself as one of the truly outstanding anthologies for Introduction to Ethics Courses. In contradistinction to many other introduction to ethics books that focus on the application of moral theories to various institutionally based social dilemmas, VICE AND VIRTUE is unabashedly committed to the exploration of private, individual virtue and responsibility. This book provides both an overview of seminal ethical theories as well as many stimulating readings chosen to encourage students' own reflection on how these abstract theories impact decisions they face individually in their everyday lives.
