The labour movement and the internet: the new internationalism

Lee, Eric
Despite international labour federations and a greater ease of mobility around the world, union branches still often feel isolated from one another. Democratic and empowering, the Internet is now providing a wholly new framework for communication, policy-making and collective action. Written by a leading authority on labour and information technology, this book covers the background to and the politics of this electronic revolution in the labour movement. The author provides advice on cost-effective ways for unions worldwide to benefit from the innovations. He explores the ways in which unions have responded to the new technology, and covers the key features of the Internet, including e-mail, the World Wide Web, bulletin boards and user networks. No technical knowledge is required to understand the topics, and all terms are explained.

The content, impact, and regulation of streaming video: the next generation of media emerges

Noam, Eli M.
Long with its interrelated companion volume, The Technology, Business, and Economics of Streaming Video, this book examines the next generation of TV--online video. It reviews the elements that lead to online platforms and video clouds and analyzes the software and hardware elements of content creation and interaction, and how these elements lead to different styles of video content. What are the models of this new content? What kind of cultural and societal acceleration can we expect? What are the public implications of the next-generation media system? What problems are arising? What kind of market power is emerging in media industries around the world? And how can one deal with them? The author addresses these questions with facts and figures, ranging across technology, economics, communications studies, business, policy, and law. He reviews the regulatory options, and recommends a new approach for video media. Media professionals in academia, management, technology, policy, and creative production will value the approachable yet thorough information presented in The Content, Impact, and Regulation of Streaming Video. --

The Jewish Quarterly Review

Dropsie College for Hebrew and Cognate Learning
Excerpt from The Jewish Quarterly Review When examining a number of Genizah fragments belonging to the British Museum I came across two paper leaves, 18 cm. X 14.5 cm. with 21 lines to the page. They are written in Arabic and in Hebrew square characters. No work of this title has been known before, and as the name of the author is absent it must be left to conjecture. A copy of a treatise so named exists in Petrograd, but no details of this work are at hand, and at present not easily to be obtained. The author of the last-named work is Abul-Faraj Harun, a prominent Karaite grammarian who lived in Jerusalem in the earlier part of the eleventh century. Seen & imagined: the world of Clifford Ross

Ross, Clifford,Anfam, David
From the romantic, highly detailed realism of his large-scale "Mountain" photographs to multimedia pieces that embrace abstract forms drawn from close observation of nature, Clifford Ross's work is unlike any other. In 2002, Ross invented his R1 camera, with which he has produced some of the highest resolution single shot photographs ever realized. In a Ross landscape, viewers can spot a bird in a tree on a mountain a mile away. Ross's longstanding desire to reconcile realism and abstraction in his art intensified when he took up photography in the mid-1990s. This book offers the first comprehensive survey of his work, from large-scale, highly detailed landscape photographs to his latest "invisible art" -- an augmented reality app for smartphones that reveals a hidden work within a work. Seen & Imagined accompanies a landmark exhibition at MASS MoCA. Featuring 139 images, most of them in color, including such major Ross series as "Mountains," "Mountain Redux," "Harmoniums," and "Digital Waves," it is the first fine-art book to offer readers an augmented reality 3D "pop up" experience (through a free downloadable app) using their smartphones. Texts by noted writers and critics David Anfam, Quentin Bajac, Arthur C. Danto, Jack Flam, Nicholas Negroponte, and Jock Reynolds, comment on Ross's work, placing it within the history of art and technology, alongside an interview by Orville Schell with the artist. -

Pictures in the Tate Gallery

C. Gasquoine Hartley
Excerpt from Pictures in the Tate Gallery It is probably with a sense of surprise that many visitors to the Tate Gallery read upon the covers of the official catalogue, "Pictures and Sculpture in the National Gallery of British Art." We remember dimly that this was the original designation of Sir Henry Tate's gift to the nation. But the academic name only lingers officially; from the very first it was discarded by the populace. Upon the day the Gallery was opened they coupled the building with the name of its founder, and to the majority of people it still remains the Tate Gallery. And in this instance the popular verdict was right. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. International monetary arrangements for the 21st century

Eichengreen, Barry J.
" Recent events have reignited the debate over the future of the international monetary system. This book, part of the Integrating National Economic series, examines international monetary options of the twenty-first century. Barry Eichengreen argues that it will not be possible for governments to prevent exchange rates from exceeding prespecified limits. Changes in technology, market structure, and politics will force countries that have traditionally pegged their exchange rates to choose between floating rates and monetary unification. Eichengreen describes the various international monetary arrangements with which policymakers have experimented in the past. He introduces the requirements that an international monetary system must satisfy and illustrates how these requirements have been met over time. He analyzes which preconditions for the smooth operation of international monetary systems in the past will be impossible to achieve in the next century and creates a list of feasible options for future policymakers. These feasible options, he concludes, will be limited to some form of floating exchange rates and monetary unions. In which direction countries should move is not obvious. The choice between floating and monetary unification depends on a host of economic and political factors. The book provides an in-depth analysis of Western Europe's experience and the dramatic international monetary initiatives currently under way, and compares options for Asia, Africa, the former Soviet Union, and the Western Hemisphere. Introduction to Semantics

Schaff, Adam
On submitting this book to the readers I wish to thank all those who have helped me to bring it to its present form. First of all, I wish to thank Professor Tadeusz Kotarbinski, who had been kind enough to read the manuscript. His profound and penetrating criticism helped me to add precision to many passages of this book. I also thank the translator Dr Olgierd Wojtasiewicz and Mr George Bidwell who checked the translation. Quotations from non-E nglish-language books are either given in existing English version, if available, or translated into English. In three cases only they are given in the original version. This refers to quotations from Husserl, Jaspers, and Vossler, and is due to the specific character of these texts. A. S. [vi. Philosophy and Engineering: An Emerging Agenda

Ibo van de Poel,David E. Goldberg
Whereas science, technology, and medicine have all called forth dedicated philosophical investigations, a fourth major contributor to the technoscientific world in which we all live - that is, engineering - has been accorded almost none of the philosophical attention it deserves. This volume thus offers a first characterisation of this important new field, by some of the primary philosophers and ethicists interested in engineering and leading engineers interested in philosophical reflections. The volume deals with such questions as: What is engineering? In what respect does engineering differ from science? What ethical problems does engineering raise? By what ethical principles are engineers guided? How do engineers themselves conceive of their profession? What do they see as the main philosophical challenges confronting them in the 21st century? The authors respond to these and other questions from philosophical and engineering view points and so illustrate how together they can meet the challenges and realize the opportunities present in the necessary encounters between philosophy and engineering - encounters that are ever more important in an increasingly engineered world and its problematic futures.

World socialism at the crossroads: an insider's view

Brucan, Silviu
Unless the socialist societies of the East adapt their system to the scientific-technological revolution, as the West has done, they will remain caught in the twentieth century. This is the theme of Silviu Brucan's book on the crisis of world socialism. He contends that these countries are at the crossroads and must make some changes in their political ideology or they will perish. This insightful book written by a veteran communist living in the East, will interest anyone concerned with Soviet studies, Slavic studies, political economy, Marxism, Communism, political sociology, and East-West relations.
