Hitler's bureaucrats: the Nazi Security Police and the banality of evil

Lozowick, Yaacov
For many, the name of Adolf Eichmann is synonymous with the Nazi murder of six million Jews. As a perpetuator of the Final Solution he stands alongside Adolf Hitler and Heinrich Himmler as one of history's most notorious murderers, yet ever since Hannah Arendt's seminal book, "Eichmann in Jerusalem: A Report on the Banality of Evil", there has been disagreement about the essence of Eichmann and by extension, about the definition of evil action. Was he a human monster or a petty bureaucrat? To what degree did the totalitarian organization to which he belonged absolve him and his staff from individual choice and responsibility for atrocities? This title looks at the words and actions of Eichmann and the bureaucrats he worked with in Berlin and throughout the more significant Gestapo offices in Western Europe. It claims that Hannah Arendt's thesis about the banality of evil was wrong. In chilling detail, it presents a group of people completely aware of what they were doing, people with high ideological motivation, people of initiative and dexterity who contributed far beyond what was necessary. While most of these bureaucrats sat behind desks rather than behind machine guns, there was nothing banal about the role they played in the destruction of European Jewry>

Character Analysis

Wilhelm Reich
Reich's classic work on the development and treatment of human character disorders, first published in 1933. As a young clinician in the 1920s, Wilhelm Reich expanded psychoanalytic resistance into the more inclusive technique of character analysis, in which the sum total of typical character attitudes developed by an individual as a blocking against emotional excitations became the object of treatment. These encrusted attitudes functioned as an "armor," which Reich later found to exist simultaneously in chronic muscular spasms. Thus mind and body came together and character analysis opened the way to a biophysical approach to disease and the prevention of it.

The Origins of Psychoanalysis Letters to Wilhelm Fliess, Drafts and Notes, 1887-1902

Sigmund Freud,Marie Bonaparte
""The Origins of Psychoanalysis: Letters to Wilhelm Fliess, Drafts and Notes, 1887-1902"" is a collection of letters, drafts, and notes written by Sigmund Freud to his close friend and colleague, Wilhelm Fliess. The book provides a fascinating insight into the early development of psychoanalysis, as Freud discusses his theories on sexuality, dreams, and the unconscious mind. The letters also reveal the personal struggles and conflicts that Freud faced during this period, including his own self-analysis and the breakdown of his friendship with Fliess. This edition includes an introduction by Peter Gay, a renowned Freud scholar, and a comprehensive index, making it an essential resource for anyone interested in the history of psychoanalysis or the life and work of Sigmund Freud.""This is a new release of the original 1954 edition. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Bachelors

Krauss, Rosalind E.
These essays on nine women artists are framed by the question, born of feminism, "What evaluative criteria can be applied to women's art?" Since the 1970s Rosalind Krauss has been exploring the art of painters, sculptors, and photographers, examining the intersection of these artists concerns with the major currents of postwar visual culture: the question of the commodity, the status of the subject, issues of representation and abstraction, and the viability of individual media. These essays on nine women artists are framed by the question, born of feminism, "What evaluative criteria can be applied to women's art?" In the case of surrealism, in particular, some have claimed that surrealist women artists must either redraw the lines of their practice or participate in the movement's misogyny. Krauss resists that claim, for these "bachelors" are artists whose expressive strategies challenge the very ideals of unity and mastery identified with masculinist aesthetics. Some of this work, such as the "part object" (Louise Bourgeois) or the "formless" (Cindy Sherman) could be said to find its power in strategies associated with such concepts as écriture feminine. In the work of Agnes Martin, Eva Hesse, or Sherrie Levine, one can make the case that the power of the work can be revealed only by recourse to another type of logic altogether. Bachelors attempts to do justice to these and other artists (Claude Cahun, Dora Maar, Louise Lawler, Francesca Woodman) in the terms their works demand.

I Know Best How Moral Narcissism Is Destroying Our Republic, If It Hasn't Already

Roger L. Simon
In 1979, Christopher Lasch published the epochal The Culture of Narcissism warning of the normalizing of narcissism in our society. Lasch may have understated it. 35 years later, in the Obama era with its parade of endless, often inexplicable, scandals we have a full blown epidemic of what has recently been called Moral Narcissism. Forget Narcissus and his reflection, Moral Narcissism the almost schizophrenic divide between intentions and results now pervading our culture is the new method for feeling good about yourself. It no longer matters how anything turns out as long as your intentions were good, that you were moral. And, just as importantly, the only determinant of those intentions, the only one who defines that morality, is you. I Know Best goes beyond Lasch to lay bare how this moral narcissism is behind all those scandals from Obamacare to the Veteran's Administration to the IRS, Benghazi, Bergdahl, Syria and beyond. Everything the Obama administration did and does was about making them feel good about themselves, the results be damned. And they have as their allies those supreme moral narcissists in the academy, media and Hollywood, ever willing to ratify those good intentions and ignore those same results. But I Know Best is not just about the Left. Moral Narcissism affects the right as well, even when they don't realize it. It is a true epidemic that must be cured in order to save our democratic republic and our futures.

The talking cures: the psychoanalyses and the psychotherapies

Wallerstein, Robert S.
How and why did the psychoanalytic psychotherapies arise out of psychoanalysis a half-century ago? What are the similarities and the differences - in goals, strategies, and results - between psychoanalysis and the psychotherapies, and how have they changed over time? How have conceptual and technical advances in psychoanalysis influenced the relationship between psychoanalysis and the dynamic psychotherapies? In this book, an eminent psychoanalytic theoretician, clinician, educator, and researcher, who has been investigating the processes and outcomes of psychoanalysis and the related psychoanalytic psychotherapies for more than four decades, addresses these questions. Dr. Robert S. Wallerstein discusses, among other topics, the different models of psychoanalysis and the dynamic psychotherapies; the crystallization of consensus on these concepts in the post-World War II period and the progressive fragmentation in subsequent decades; and the relation of these evolving trends both to the proliferating relational and interactional perspectives in today's psychoanalytic world and to the increasing acknowledgment and acceptance of our worldwide psychoanalytic theoretical diversity.

Electromagnetic Fields, Energy, and Forces

Robert M. Fano,Lan Jen Chu,Richard B. Adler
This book develops a consistent macroscopic theory of electromagnetism and discusses the relation between circuit theory and field theory. The theory is developed in successive steps from the Lorentz force, the integral form of Maxwell's equations in free space, and suitable macroscopic models of polarized and magnetized matter. Special features * Covers the electromagnetism of moving bodies and the process of electromechanical energy conversion * Introduces a power-series technique for analyzing quasi-static fields and quasi-stationary systems * Emphasizes the synthesis of fields as opposed to the analysis of fields * Presents, in an appendix, the four-dimensional relativistic formulation of macroscopic electrodynamics recently developed by one of the authors (L. J. Chu)

Freud on a precipice: how Freud's fate pushed psychoanalysis over the edge

Langs, Robert
Freud on a Precipice is an exploration of eight likely early-life traumas experienced by Sigmund Freud and an effort to show how their unconscious processing adversely affected the psychoanalytic theory he forged beginning in the late 1890's. Using a new method to decode key narratives in Freud's opus, Langs makes a compelling argument for the probability that Freud was never sure of the identity of his biological father. The book also offers a fresh study of paradigms, paradigm shifts, and archetypes.

Perversion: The Erotic Form of Hatred

Stoller, Robert J.
The author examines the psychological forces that contribute to sexual excitement in men and women. He looks at sexual aberrations to learn what they can tell us about "normal" sexual development and finds that in perversion hostility is directed, either in reality or fantasy, toward one's sex object. Through case studies and other provocative examples, Dr. Stoller shows how childhood frustrations and conflicts are hidden within fantasies to generate sexual excitement. Whether in the form of pornography, daydreams, or ritualized sex practices, childhood traumas are transformed into triumphs thereby making the victim the victor. [from the back cover]

Becoming Gay

Isay M.D., Richard A.
In a study that takes him from the developmental crises of homosexual adolescents to the complex dilemma of homosexual men married to women and the often surprising effects of AIDS diagnoses on the psyhological growth of both the men facing death and those who will survive them, Dr. Richard Isay draws on his own experiences and those of his patients to explore the crucial role sexual identity plays in all stages of human development.

The Jewish mind

Patai, Raphael
A Landmark Exploration of Jewish History and Cultur e First published in 1977, The Jewish Mind provides a penetrating insight into the complex collective reality of the Jewish people. Raphael Patai examines how six great historical encounters, spanning three millennia, between the Jews and other cultures led to both change and continuity in Jewish communities throughout the global diaspora. A Timeless Analysis by a Prominent Scholar Patai, a noted cultural anthropologist and historian, drew on a lifetime of research and personal experience to explore the contemporary Jewish mind in its many manifestations, including an exploration of the notion of Jews as a race, an investigation into Jewish intelligence and talents, a discussion of Jewish self-hate, and a profile of Jewish personality and character. An Insightful New Foreword by Ari L. Goldman Bestselling author and journalist Ari L. Goldman places the book in the context of recent turbulent events, especially in the Middle East, and confirms Patai’s conclusion that Judaism remains of enormous value to humankind. Goldman calls the book “a brilliant and absorbing survey of everything poured into the Jewish mind over the millennia.” The Jewish Mind is a towering work of scholarship that remains relevant to anyone trying to understand Jewish culture and society around the world today.
