Rochester knockings: a novel of the Fox sisters
""The Fox sisters grew up just outside of Rochester, NY, in a house that had a reputation for being haunted, due in large part to a series of strange "rappings" or "knockings" that plagued its inhabitants. Fed up by whatever was responsible for the knockings, the youngest of the sisters (who was twelve at the time) challenged the ghost and ended up communicating with the spirit of Charles Haynes, who had been murdered in the house and buried in the cellar. Thanks to the enthusiasm of one Isaac Post, the Fox sisters became instantly famous for talking to the dead, launching the Spiritualist Movement in the US. After taking Rochester by storm, the sisters moved to New York where they were the most famous mediums of the time, giving seances for hundreds of people. Then, it all fell apart, and the sisters were exposed as frauds. Nevertheless, even today the Fox sisters are considered to be the founders of Spiritualism, one of the most popular religious movements of the past couple centuries (consider the success of Long Island Medium and the hundreds of thousands who visit Lily Dale every year). Rich in historical detail, Rochester Knockings novelizes the rise and fall of these most infamous of mediums. Hubert Haddad was born in Tunisia, and is the author of dozens of works, including the novels Palestine (winner of the Prix des Cinq Continents de la Francophonie), Tango chinois, and La Condition magique (winner of the Grand Prix du Roman de la Socie;te; des Gens de Lettres)"--

Slavonic and Romantic Music Essays and Studie
Gerald Abraham's reputation as an authority on Russian music has tended to obscure his deep interest in the music of Poland and Czechoslovakia and in the music of the nineteenth-century generally. From a lifetime's devoted scholarship in these fields the author has now selected his best work to make up a volume of exceptional breadth and fascination. The subjects range from the relationship of Slavonic music to the western world to detailed essays on figures such as Chopin, Dvorak, Rubinstein and Mussorgsky. There are two new unpulished essays. A study of realism in Janacek's operas contains a particularly fine analysis of 'From the House of the Dead' and there is an account of the fantastic 'erotic diary' for piano in which Fibich, one of the best, recorded the secrets of his love affair with Anezka Schulzova. This book is welcomed as much by specialists in the field as by the general reader.
Slavonic and romantic music: essays and studies
Gerald Abraham's reputation as an authority on Russian music has tended to obscure his deep interest in the music of Poland and Czechoslovakia, and of the nineteenth-century generally. From a lifetime's devoted scholarship in these fields Abrahams selected his best work to make up this volume (first published in 1968), one of exceptional breadth and fascination. The subjects range from the relationship of Slavonic music to the western world, to detailed essays on figures such as Chopin, Dvorak, Rubinstein and Mussorgsky. A study of realism in Janacek's operas contains a particularly fine analysis of From a House of the Dead and there is an account of the fantastic 'erotic diary' for piano in which Zdenek Fibich, one of the finest nineteenth-century Czech symphonists, recorded the secrets of his love affair with former student and librettist Aneka Schulzova. Gerald Abraham (1904-1988) was a distinguished musicologist, among his official posts those of Professor of Music at the University of Liverpool and Assistant Controller of Music at the BBC.

The rise of romance
Explores medieval French and English romances in their relation to the literary aesthetic of that vanished age as well as to the evolution of narrative. The framework of this investigation is chronological, beginning in the twelfth century with the work of Chrétien de Troyes and following through to the great Arhurian Prose Cycle and its remodelling by Sir Thomas Malory, whose mind and art the author strives constantly to elucidate. As it seeks out the meaning and design of the early masterpieces, the study transcends its chronological framework: major problems of style and technique arise that are of fundamental importance to the contemporary novel as well. Related phenomena in medieval painting, sculpture and manuscript ilumination are drawn upon to illustrate and reinforce the significance of the author's discoveries.

The poet's self and the poem: essays on Goethe Nietzsche, Rilke and Thomas Mann
"In this published version of the Lord Northcliffe Lectures in Literature, delivered at University College London in Spring 1975, Professor Heller is concerned with the imaginative mediation between life and art which is a major theme in the work of the four writers he discusses. The profound process by which a great work of literary art ('poem' in the title is used in a sense close to the German 'Dichtung') may grow out of a situation in life, mirror, and yet transcend it is illustrated by Goethe in Marienbad, Nietzsche in the 'Waste Land', Rilke in Paris and Thomas Mann in Venice." -- Goodreads

Issues such as the plot which paved the way to the eruption of hostilities, Egyptian losses and gains, and Soviet and American opposition come under scrutiny.--Publisher description.
