Selected papers of Norman Levinson

Levinson, Norman
Norman Levinson (1912-1975) was a mathematician of international repute. This collection of his selected papers bears witness to the profound influence Levinson had on research in mathematical analysis with applications to problems in science and technology. Levinson's originality is reflected in his fundamental contributions to complex, harmonic and stochastic equations, and to analytic number theory, where he continued to make significant advances toward resolving the Riemann hypothesis up to the end of his life. The two volumes are divided by topic, with commentary by some of those who have felt the impact of Levinson's legacy.

A system of pragmatic idealism. Vol.3hMetaphilosophical inquiries

Rescher, Nicholas
This is the third and final volume of A System of Pragmatic Idealism, a series that will synthesize the life's work of the philosopher Nicholas Rescher. Rescher's numerous books and articles, which address almost every major philosophical topic, reflect a unified approach: the combination of pragmatism and idealism characteristic of his thinking throughout his career. The three related but independently readable books of the series present Rescher's system as a whole. In combining leading ideas of European continental idealism and American pragmatism in a new way, Rescher has created an integrated philosophical position in which the central concepts of these two traditions become a coherent totality. The initial volume in the series was dedicated to epistemology, the philosophy of science, and the philosophy of nature, while the second dealt with issues of value theory, ethics, and practical philosophy. In Volume III Rescher examines the nature of philosophical inquiry itself, seeking to affirm the classical conception of philosophy as a significant problem-solving enterprise that draws on the whole range of human experience to attempt to resolve the "big questions." Pay Day (Classic Reprint)

Nathan Asch
Excerpt from Pay Day Quicker and quicker he walked toward the sunlight, Harry Grossman hardly able to keep up with him, but hurrying behind him and call ing: What's the rush? Wait for me; but he walked on, went through the big entrance where the doors had been summerlike folded to the sides, went down the great stone steps. The sun was on the right lighting up the Customs House, the statues around it, the sun was red in the windows of the brick Railroad Building. He walked right to the sun. He said to himself: I want to be in the sun for just a moment. He became ashamed of the thought, said: I don't want sunlight at all. All I want is the subway station, and it's there where the sunlight is. I am going to the subway station and not to the sun. Changing Perspectives in Literature and the Visual Arts, 1650-1820

Murray Roston
Continuing with the theme of his work Renaissance Perspectives in Literature and the Visual Arts , Murray Roston applies to a later period the same critical principle: that for each generation there exists a central complex of inherited ideas and urgent contemporary concerns to which each creative artist and writer responds in his or her own way. Roston demonstrates that what emerges is not a fixed or monolithic pattern for each generation but a dynamic series of responses to shared challenges. The book relates leading English writers and literary modes to contemporary developments in architecture, painting, and sculpture. "A sumptuous book. . . . Clearly and gracefully written and cogently argued, Roston's admirable achievement is of paramount significance to literary studies, to cultural and art history, and to aesthetics. . . . Outstanding."--Choice Originally published in 1990. Music of the spheres and the dance of death: studies in musical iconology

Meyer-Baer, Kathi
The roots and evolution of two concepts usually thought to be Western in origin-musica mundana (the music of the spheres) and musica humana (music's relation to the human soul)-are explored. Beginning with a study of the early creeds of the Near East, Professor Meyer-Baer then traces their development in the works of Plato and the Gnostics, and in the art and literature of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. Previous studies of symbolism in music have tended to focus on a single aspect of the problem. In this book the concepts of musica humana and musica mundane are related to philosophy, aesthetics, and the history of religion and are given a rightful place in the history of civilization.Originally published in 1970.The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. Neonatal bioethics: the moral challenges of medical innovation

Lantos, John D.
Neonatal intensive care has been one of the most morally controversial areas of medicine during the past thirty years. This study examines the interconnected development of four key aspects of neonatal intensive care: medical advances, ethical analysis, legal scrutiny, and econometric evaluation. The authors assert that a dramatic shift in societal attitudes toward newborns and their medical care was a stimulus for and then a result of developments in the medical care of newborns. They divide their analysis into three eras of neonatal intensive care. The first, characterized by the rapid advance of medical technology from the late 1960s to the Baby Doe case of 1982, established neonatal care as a legitimate specialty of medical care, separate from the rest of pediatrics and medicine. During this era, legal scholars and moral philosophers debated the relative importance of parental autonomy, clinical prognosis, and children's rights. The second era, beginning with the Baby Doe case (a legal battle that spurred legislation mandating that infants with debilitating birth defects be treated unless the attending physician deems efforts to prolong life "futile"), stimulated efforts to establish a consistent federal standard on neonatal care decisions and raised important moral questions concerning the meaning of "futility" and of "inhumane" treatment. In the third era, a consistent set of decision-making criteria and policies was established. These policies were the result of the synergy and harmonization of newly agreed upon ethical principles and newly discovered epidemiological characteristics of neonatal care. Tracing the field's recent history, notable advances, and considerable challenges yet to be faced, the authors present neonatal bioethics as a paradigm of complex conversation among physicians, philosophers, policy makers, judges, and legislators which has led to responsible societal oversight of a controversial medical innovation.

Egypt and Nubia Their Scenery and Their People, Being Incidents of History and Travel, From the Best and Most Recent Authorities, Including J. L. Burckhardt and Lord Lindsay

J. A. St. John
Excerpt from Egypt and Nubia: Their Scenery and Their People, Being Incidents of History and Travel, From the Best and Most Recent Authorities, Including J. L. Burckhardt and Lord Lindsay From time immemorial Egypt has been an object of extreme curiosity to the rest of the world. The number of travellers who have explored and described it is accordingly immense; yet each successive visitor feels as though he were approaching a new scene, a country of undelineated beauties, the very home and abiding-place of all that is most strange and mysterious in human society, and in the monuments of past ages. Of these feelings the roots lie scattered far and wide over the face of history and tradition. Almost the dawn of Scripture light breaks upon the rocks and sands of this wonderful valley, whose vast river, rolling from the unknown regions of Central Africa, diffuses fertility wherever it flows, and has, through all ages, inspired those subsisting on its bounty with feelings closely akin to piety and religion. In Egypt, Abraham, a Bedouin from Mesopotamia, sojourned as a stranger, when his wife Sarah was taken from him to be transferred to the king's harem. Humane politics and methods of inquiry

Pool, Ithiel de Sola
Ithiel de Sola Pool was a distinguished scholar of the political process, and one of the most original thinkers in the development of an integrated social science. This volume focuses upon his contributions to the development of research methods that deepen our understanding of human behaviour. The book is divided into five parts treating the analysis of communications, computer simulation, forecasting, network theory, and the social sciences in political contexts. The first part considers the problems and possibilities of analysis raised by the unprecedented quantity of data made available by widespread and improved communications technology; what should be counted and how should inferences be made. Part two explores computer simulation in the study of presidential election patterns and how it can provide in-depth analyses of crisis situations in history. Part three focuses on strategies for predicting the future of international politics and methods to forecast the impacts of new communications technologies, while part four offers a rigorous analysis of domestic and global contact networks and the so-called "small world" phenomenon. Part five is concerned with external challenges to the use of social science to create more humane politics, including the question of value neutrality, ideology, "deconstructive" critical theory, and threats by government to the health of universities. In a concluding essay Lloyd Etheredge draws upon Pool's work to discuss several new ways in which the methods treated in this volume can be applied to contemporary social change.

Between War and Peace

Herbert Feis
The author brings to life more clearly than ever before the moment of triumph and the intricate web of negotiations preceding the Potsdam Conference in that period between victory and cold war. His account of the Conference itself- recreating the feelings of tension, the personalities of the leaders, the steady pressures of the Russians-is likely to remain the standard reference. One sees Truman, still uncomfortable in office but determined to get matters settled quickly. There is Churchill, the master of eloquence and maneuver, suddenly replaced by Attlee in the midst of negotiations. And there is Stalin, always suspicious, always pushing for expansion. Between War and Peace shows these leaders trying to evaluate the atomic bomb, Truman hopeful Churchill enthusiastic, Stalin apparently uninterested and noncommittal. Originally published in 1960. Summary of Long-Term Development of Demand and Supply for Agricultural Products in the Federal Republic of Germany (Classic Reprint)

Helmut Schmidt
Excerpt from Summary of "Long-Term Development of Demand and Supply for Agricultural Products in the Federal Republic of Germany" A projection of one or several economic magnitudes is always a limited forecast. It is an attempt to project under certain presupposed conditions. Therefore, these conditions should be as realistic as possible. Consequently, the results of the projection tell very little unless evaluated in connection with the basic assumptions. The main emphasis in any projection thus should be the bases for the estimates. Jewish Emancipation The Contract Myth

Harry Sacher
Excerpt from Jewish Emancipation: The Contract Myth One common argument against Zionism, which those who employ it think particularly effective, is the contention that the very profession of Zionism is both a breach of faith by Jews and a peril to Jews. It is a breach of faith, they say, because it repudiates the fundamental principle by virtue of which the grant of civic equality was made to Jews in those countries where such a grant has been made. It is a peril because it deprives the emancipated Jews of their title deeds to civic liberty and equality, while it renders powerless the one instrument which could open the gates of freedom to those Jews who are still unemancipated; What, according to this contention, is that fundamental principle upon which the Jewish emancipation of the past rested and the Jewish emancipation of the future must rest ? It is easier to ask that question than to get a precise answer to it, but, so far as may be gathered from the vague formulation of the critics of Zionism, this is their thesis: - The Jews were conceded emancipation as a sect and because they were a sect. The Religion of Duty

Felix Adler
Excerpt from The Religion of Duty In the absence of a more carefully prepared volume, it has seemed that to draw upon these spoken addresses for some expression of the principles which are most central in Professor Adler's thought, and to place them within the reach of the many people who desire to know more fully the conclusions of this earnest moral leader, would be a real service to the ethical and religious interests of the present time. Some of the material which goes to form the present volume has been published in Ethical Addresses and The Ethical Record; but the larger part is here published for the first time, while that which is republished has been more carefully edited and arranged with a view to giving the sequence necessary for any adequate understanding of the point of view and the resulting conclusions. It is hoped that in the near future another volume may be published, presenting the more practical aspects of Professor Adler's work along the line of social ethics, as the present volume gives the distinctively theoretical phases of his thought.
