Skinny Dynamite

Micheline, Jack
In September 1968, a short story he wrote, "Skinny Dynamite", was published in Renaissance 2, the literary supplement of John Bryan Bryan's Los Angeles alternative newspaper Open City. Solicited from Micheline by guest editor Charles Bukowski, its subject was a promiscuous young woman. The story used the word "fuck" and Bryan was arrested for obscenity, but was not convicted. Second Coming Press published a book of Micheline's stories, entitled Skinny Dynamite after his most notorious work, in 1980.

Heaven in our hearts

Robins, Patricia
'Always love life' was the message Briony Stone's first sweetheart left with her before he was killed in an air crash. It seems strange that the same thought should be voiced by Robert Baker, the young vet whom she has known such a short time, but to whom she is so unaccountably drawn. Briony, now married to the snobbish, unimaginative Charles, realises too late that she has disregarded her lover's advice, running away from life into marriage with a man she likes and respects but doesn't love.

Dawn Ginsbergh's Revenge

Perelman, S.J.
Before he became one of America’s most celebrated humorists, S.J. Perelman unleashed his razor-sharp wit in Dawn Ginsbergh’s Revenge, a dazzling debut filled with linguistic acrobatics, absurdist storytelling, and sheer comic genius. Overflowing with rapid-fire puns, genre-bending satire, and wordplay that bends the English language to his will, Perelman’s first collection of sketches captures the youthful energy and anarchic spirit that would later influence the Marx Brothers. Whether lampooning pulp fiction, skewering popular culture, or crafting surreal scenarios where no paragraph ends where you expect, this book is a wild ride through the mind of a master humorist in the making. For fans of clever comedy, literary playfulness, and vintage satire, Dawn Ginsbergh’s Revenge is a rare and delightful glimpse into the early brilliance of a writer who redefined American humor.

Stranger within the gates: short stories by Bertha Thomas

Thomas, Bertha
First published in 1912, this is a collection of witty, sharply observed short stories which engage with feminism, the "new women" of the 1890s, alongside narratives which explore the personal and emotional conflict experienced by people torn between multiple ethnicities or between different social and national groups. Bertha Thomas lightly but deftly sketches her characters with a sharp eye for humorous and satirical detail. Her stories are by turns Gothic, romantic, humorous, fantastic, and satirical, but always engagingly written.

The Noonday Cemetery and Other Stories

Gustaw Herling-Grudziński
The Noonday Cemetery & Other Stories, selected by Herling himself shortly before his death in 2000, is a collection of thirteen brilliant stories spanning the last twenty years of his life. His novel The Island was published to great acclaim in 1993, and his memoir, A World Apart, is among the most powerful accounts of life in the Soviet gulag. Volcano and Miracle, published in 1996, contains short fiction and prose writings from his Journal Written at Night. But nowhere before have Herling's best stories--and Herling was indeed a master of the short story--been compiled and published in English translation. In "The Noonday Cemetery," an eerie graveyard on an Italian hillside overlooks the sea and hides the secrets of a murder (or suicide?). "Beata, Santa" describes the plight of a young Polish woman raped by Serbs, who is pressured by the Catholic Church to keep her child. In "A Madrigal of Mourning," a Russian woman musicologist becomes obsessed with Carlo Gesualdo (1560-1613), Prince of Venosa, a madrigalist and murderer. These timeless stories, dealing with moral, often historical, subjects and written in passionate, deeply affecting prose, affirm without a doubt the assessment by The Boston Globe that Herling is "a writer of stylistic mastery and moral depth, who deserves to be placed among the best in any language."

I, Dr. Greenblatt, orthodontist, 251-1457

Barwin, Gary
"At times comic, tender, dark, and arrestingly bizarre, Gary Barwin's latest fiction collection marvels at the strangeness, charm, and beauty that is contemporary life in the quantum world. Ranging from short story to postcard fiction, Barwin's stories are luminous, hilarious, and surprising. A billionaire falls in love with a kitchen appliance, a couple share a pair of legs, a pipeline-size hair is given the Nobel Prize only so that it can be taken away, a father remembers with tenderness the radiant happiness of his teenage child, trapped inside his body. As the Utne Reader said of his last collection, "what makes them so compelling is Barwin's balance of melancholy with wide-eyed wonder.""--Back cover.

You and Me, Belonging

Aaron Kreuter
In You and Me, Belonging , Aaron Kreuter explores our contemporary world with insight, originality, and empathy. The stories in this debut collection are brimming with characters striving to fit in, to find their place in the world, to belong. A Jewish waitress has an affair with a Palestinian chef. A one-percenter self-destructs when he becomes obsessed with mastering the guitar. A university student stoned in Amsterdam hallucinates about Anne Frank on Birthright Israel. In the closing novella, a vanful of young women follows a fictional jam band across America, steeping in counterculture, music, and the ups and downs of the road. The collection is satiric and emotional, angry and hopeful, passionate and surprising. The Little Boy Down the Road Short Stories & Essays on the Beauty of Family Life

Douglas W. Phillips
The most beautiful and life-changing stories are not found in the pages of newspapers, but in the everyday events in the life of the Christian family. They are the stories of boys who long for their fathers, of husbands who become better men because of the love of faithful brides, and of little girls who learn to dream great dreams for God. These are moments that really matter -- the ones that count for eternity. ''The Little Boy Down the Road'' is a collection of humorous and thought-provoking short stories and essays on family and fatherhood that reveal the beauty of the Christian household. It is a book about the nobility of the commonplace events in life and the special epiphanies of parenthood -- the moments of supreme clarity where parents realize, as if coming out of a slumber-- the inexpressible preciousness of the Christian family and the unbounding love of Christ to shower sinful men with such earthly joys.
