The topological classification of stratified spaces

Weinberger, Shmuel
This book provides the theory for stratified spaces, along with important examples and applications, that is analogous to the surgery theory for manifolds. In the first expository account of this field, Weinberger provides topologists with a new way of looking at the classification theory of singular spaces with his original results. Divided into three parts, the book begins with an overview of modern high-dimensional manifold theory. Rather than including complete proofs of all theorems, Weinberger demonstrates key constructions, gives convenient formulations, and shows the usefulness of the technology. Part II offers the parallel theory for stratified spaces. Here, the topological category is most completely developed using the methods of "controlled topology." Many examples illustrating the topological invariance and noninvariance of obstructions and characteristic classes are provided. Applications for embeddings and immersions of manifolds, for the geometry of group actions, for algebraic varieties, and for rigidity theorems are found in Part III. This volume will be of interest to topologists, as well as mathematicians in other fields such as differential geometry, operator theory, and algebraic geometry.

Manned Laboratories in Space Second International Orbital laboratory Symposium

S. Fred Singer
The publication of this book is extremely timely, for the next major advances in manned space flight after Project Apollo will most likely be made in earth orbital operations. Manned exploration of the moon will certainly continue after the initial landing, but it will be performed essentially with the Saturn V launch vehicles and Apollo spacecraft developed in Apollo, especially in the early phases. Modifications to this basic hardware will increase operating capabilities to permit extensive lunar explo ration during prolonged stay times by the astronauts on the moon's surface. Manned orbital space stations have been studied for years, and NASA is already well along in development of its first attempt to provide more spacious accommo dations for astronaut-scientists in its Saturn Workshop program. While the Workshop is certainly not the ultimate space station of which our technology is capable, it is a workable, poor man's approach to the immediate need for using and expanding our present manned space flight capability without a de trimentalloss of momentum. The approach of converting a Saturn rocket stage into a manned laboratory and observatory in space is an improvisation that matches the use of the jerry-built Jupiter C back in 1958 to launch Explorer I. Let's hope that it can get the job done just as effectively.

Modes of Being

Paul Weiss
Excerpt from Modes of Being Preceding the four chapters Of pivotal propositions and commen taries is an introductory essay which places the work in relation to what is being done in philosophy today, and offers a kind of auto biographical account of the way in which the four crucial ideas of the book developed. These chapters are followed by a section offer ing a brief formulation of some of the denials that could be made to what is here said. These denials, it is contended, mute one another, and taken together add up to what has been afiirmed. The next sec tion deals with the nature of the system as a whole. In addition to summarizing and interrelating some of the major points made earlier, it discusses the basic problems which any system acknowledging a plurality of realities must face. At the very end, all the pivotal propo sitions are re-presented without comment, in order to provide an easy means of reference and to make it possible for the reader readily to envisage the intent of the entire work. Manasseh ben Israel
The 18th century was a wealth of knowledge, exploration and rapidly growing technology and expanding record-keeping made possible by advances in the printing press. In its determination to preserve the century of revolution, Gale initiated a revolution of its own: digitization of epic proportions to preserve these invaluable works in the largest archive of its kind. Now for the first time these high-quality digital copies of original 18th century manuscripts are available in print, making them highly accessible to libraries, undergraduate students, and independent scholars. The Age of Enlightenment profoundly enriched religious and philosophical understanding and continues to influence present-day thinking. Works collected here include masterpieces by David Hume, Immanuel Kant, and Jean-Jacques Rousseau, as well as religious sermons and moral debates on the issues of the day, such as the slave trade. The Age of Reason saw conflict between Protestantism and Catholicism transformed into one between faith and logic -- a debate that continues in the twenty-first century.++++The below data was compiled from various identification fields in the bibliographic record of this title. A Guide to the Paintings in the Florentine Galleries The Uffizi, the Pitti the Accademia

Maud Cruttwell
Excerpt from A Guide to the Paintings in the Florentine Galleries: The Uffizi, the Pitti the Accademia So many important changes have been made within the last few years in the three Florentine Galleries that a new Guide has become indispensable. Not only have new rooms been, added old ones closed, and the places of numerous paintings been changed, but many of the old erroneous attributions have at last been altered in conformity with modern scientific criticism and documentary evidence. New works have been acquired, and the entire collection of the Gallery of S. Maria Nuova has been added to the Uffizi and dispersed among the rest. The official catalogues sold at the entrance have, it is true, been brought up to date as regards arrangement and the new attributions, but they are otherwise mere reprints of the old. The following work is intended not only as a catalogue for use in the Galleries, but as a book of reference for the student. All the facts known concerning the pictures are given, and an alphabetical index of the painters whose works are mentioned, with the date of their birth, death, school, master, and influences, is appended. The descriptions usually given in guide-books, catalogues, and even in critical works are apt to be most wearisome and useless, by reason of too much detail. Chapters on Jewish Literature

Israel Abrahams
Excerpt from Chapters on Jewish Literature These twenty-five short chapters on Jewish Literature open with the fall of Jerusalem in the year 70 of the current era, and end with the death of Moses Mendelssohn in 1786. Thus the period covered extends over more than seventeen centuries. Yet, long as this period is, it is too brief. To do justice to the literature of Judaism even in outline, it is clearly necessary to include the Bible, the Apocrypha, and the writings of Alexandrian Jews, such as Philo. Only by such an inclusion can the genius of the Hebrew people be traced from its early manifestations through its inspired prime to its brilliant after-glow in the centuries with which this little volume deals. Awakening Palestine (Classic Reprint)

Leon Simon
Excerpt from Awakening Palestine The object of this book is to assist English readers to understand on the one side the motive force and the significance of Zionist work-in Palestine, on the other side the conditions under which that work is being carried on, the progress which it has made, and the problems by which it is confronted. Some unavoid able delay in the appearance of the book has interposed a larger interval than might have been desirable between the writing of certain of the articles and their publication; but it is believed that in all matters of importance the information given about Pales tinian conditions is substantially up-to-date. Karl Goldmark
Excerpt from The Queen of Sheba: Opera in Four Acts, From a d104 by Mosenthal Kano awaits thecoming of the Queen of Sheba. He has dispatched his favorite courtier, Assad, to escort the royal guest to Jerusalem. Assad, the betrothed of Sulamith, the High Priest's daughter, was to celebrate his nuptials during the Queen' s sojourn in the Jewish capital; but at the foot of the Lebanon he has surprised the beautiful queen in a bath, and, inflamed by her charms, has become deeply enam ored with her, as she with him. On his return to Jerusalem he 18 met by his betrothed and her father, but conscious of his guilty passion he shrinks from their welcomes. Solomon who half divines the truth, questions him closely, whereupon Assad confesses the truth so far as it is known to himself, for he is not yet aware of the fact that it was the Queen herself whom he had espied in the bath. Solomon exhorts himto remain faithful to Sulamith; Assad promises obedience, but finds his resolution shaken when, at the Queen's reception of the royal court, she raises her veil and gazes at him. Dining the night the Queen has a secret meeting with Assad in the royal gardens and urges him to abandon Sulamith and to return with her (the Queen) to Arabia. The day set for his nuptials with Sulamith arrives Solomon himself appears in the temple to witness the celebration Assad seems inclined to return to his faith, but on seeing the Queen enter the sacred edifice, his unhahowed passxon revives, and be publicly spurns his devoted bride. Solomon, suspecting the truth, conjures the Queen to solve this mystery, but she declares that she does not know Assad and has never seen him. The latter is condemned to death by the priests, but the execution of judgment is stayed by the Ling. The Queen pleads for him, but Solomon remains deaf to her prayers, where upon the Queen departs from Jerusalem. Sulamith declares her intention to retire from the world and to devote her remaining days to God. Assad, whose life has been spared, but who is condemned by the King to perpetual banishment, strays repent nully in the Syrian desert. Once more he meets the false Queen who exhausts her seductive eloquence, but m vain. Assad remains deaf to her pleadings and is resolved to atone his guilt by sincere repentance. He expires in the arms of Sulamith who, accompanied by her maidens, is traversing the desert on her way to her cloistral seclusion and has found her faithless lover fainting and dying. Salt A Novel (Classic Reprint)

Herbert Gold
Excerpt from Salt: A Novel Now he tried her name once more: Sarah. Sarah. Sarah. Yes, over. He opened the refrigerator and gazed inside. It began its hot pumping labor at keeping cool. The last evident sign of Sarah's taking nourishment with him was the two pears she had brought as her Saturday morning gift - luxury fruits from a luxury fruiterer, deep yellow and green, carried in tissue across town from Madison Avenue. Well, those pears should be served at room temperature, but they were pretty good chilled, too. Gluttonous, destroying, he ate them both, hunched over the sink, his hands drenched in ripe pear juice. He washed. He opened the window. Bruised pear fragrance gone. Goodbye, Sarah; go home to your cuckold; farewell. The tradition of Western music

Abraham, Gerald
In The Tradition of Western Music, Gerald Abraham distills his Ernest Bloch Lectures at Berkeley into a sweeping meditation on how music both embodies and transforms cultural life. Rather than treating tradition as “the dead hand of the past,” Abraham frames it as a dynamic process: a living, evolving dialogue between communal memory, individual creativity, and shifting historical circumstances. Across essays on musical language, social forces, and the balance of continuity and innovation, he asks why certain traditions persist while others wither, and how composers from Luther to Bach, Berlioz, and Mussorgsky stand within—and sometimes against—their inherited legacies. The book insists that the history of Western music is never just a chronicle of works but a record of responses, reinterpretations, and constant change. Abraham interweaves studies of plainsong, chorales, folk traditions, and modern performance practices with broader reflections on nationalism, cross-cultural exchange, and the effects of religion, politics, and technology on musical form. Written in an accessible yet scholarly style, The Tradition of Western Music offers students, performers, and general readers alike an interpretive guide to understanding how music has functioned as both a shared cultural inheritance and a site of perpetual renewal. War and the Arme Blanche

Erskine Childers
Excerpt from War and the Arme Blanche I have read with the greatest interest Mr. Childers's illuminating book "War and the Arme Blanche." My opinion of the subject with which it deals is already so well known throughout the army that I need not labour to say how entirely I agree with the author's main thesis; indeed, anyone who will take the trouble to read "Cavalry Training" (1904), will see that I anticipated the arguments which he has so ably developed. This being so, it is not surprising that I should view the regulations laid down in "Cavalry Training" (1907), with some concern. Let us consider briefly what the history of this question - the comparative value of steel weapons and firearms for Cavalry in war - is. Until within the last few years our Lancer regiments depended entirely on the lance and sword, while other Cavalry regiments depended almost entirely on the sword. This was inevitable because of the inaccuracy and short range of the smooth-bore carbine. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Lectures on pseudo-differential operators: regularity theorems and applications to non-elliptic problems (MN-24)

Nagel, Alexander,Stein, Elias M.
The theory of pseudo-differential operators (which originated as singular integral operators) was largely influenced by its application to function theory in one complex variable and regularity properties of solutions of elliptic partial differential equations. Given here is an exposition of some new classes of pseudo-differential operators relevant to several complex variables and certain non-elliptic problems. Originally published in 1979. Thorstein Veblen

Douglas dowd
Thorstein Veblen shook the complacency of America in the early twentieth century with his incisive criticisms of our social and economic systems. Discarding the classical view of "eternal" economic laws that conveniently justified the nineteenth-century predatory practices of "big business" in terms of rational self-interest, Veblen cast a fresh, merciless eye on America's money-making passion. In glittering prose, Veblen exposed our social system as one designed to block man's natural "instinct of workmanship." He demonstrated that our leisure-class culture fostered the myth that work was inherently irksome to man. Veblen was also fascinated by the machine and the new science of technology. He saw businessmen basically at war with engineers and scientists because making exorbitant profits did not necessarily jibe with making better goods. In his study of this intriguing personality, Thorstein Veblen, Douglas Dowd reveals that Veblen was unsuccessful in his university career and his two marriages, and in his private life was strange, bitter, and detached. But in his books, Veblen shone as one of America's most penetrating thinkers whose theories proved a potent force in the modernization of economics as a science. Dowd's sympathetic approach to Veblen's nature and problems places this giant in the field against a contemporary background in powerful and lively fashion. In his new introduction, Michael Keaney breathes new life into this unjustly neglected primer on Veblen. A new generation of students will undoubtedly benefit from this comprehensive guide to the thought of someone whose intellectual endeavor was non-doctrinaire and constantly -changing.
