Tsing

David Albahari
A beautifully written prose work, Tsing is a multi-layered narrative that combines a wholly fictional novel-within-a-novel with an episodic chronicle of the narrator's present as a traveler to and visiting writer in the United States. Much more than an "ordinary" postmodern text, Tsing is a quiet and moving paean to the narrator's deceased father. Beginning with a series of imagined vignettes involving a father and a daughter, Albahari weaves both real and imagined narrative fragments together with considerable skill. As Albahari's fragments - simple stories about persons approaching each other, spending some time together, and eventually going their separate ways - accumulate, his deft combination of paradox and poetry provides a kaleidoscopic view of memory, love, and loneliness.

The Jerusalem Review, Vol. 8

Gabriel Moked
The Jerusalem Review is published in Israel, and is meant to be distributed all over the world. It includes translations from Hebrew literature ancient and modern; contributions by Jewish writers in the Diaspora; essays on various aspects of Judaism, Israel, the Middle East, and related topics, and a section devoted to the visual arts in Israel. It also seeks to establish a genuine dialogue with non-Jewish authors and intellectuals. We wish to exhibit both the pluralism and the unique character of spiritual, cultural, artistic, and educational trends existing in contemporary Israel. Despite the limited number of Hebrew speakers and readers, Hebrew is one of the classical languages of West and East alike, and perhaps the only classical language still spoken today. Its vitality and richness are also manifest in the achievements of contemporary Israeli literature. The Jerusalem Review seeks to transcend the barrier of language and to cultivate a joint Israeli-Diaspora forum based on mutual exploration of cultural issues and reflection on many dimensions of Jewish heritage. In addition, we intend to reach the non-Jewish intellectual and enlightened media ambiences, and initiate a dialogue with Palestinian, Arab and Muslim writers and academy elites from a standpoint of mutual respect.

A.M. Klein, the father of Canadian Jewish literature: essays in the poetics of humanistic passion

Brenner, Rachel Feldhay
Analyzes the works of Canadian Jewish poet A.M. Klein (1909-1972) written in the late 1920s-early 1950s, reading them as a combative poetic response to history. Klein's early poetry in "Hath Not a Jew, " composed against the background of the rise of antisemitism in Europe and in Montreal, his hometown, reveals his deep identification with Jewish tradition and his disillusionment with the humanist inability to confront Nazism. Deeply affected by news of the Holocaust, he wrote his mock epic "The Hitleriad" in 1942, in which he presented Hitler's ugliness, mediocrity, and meanness of spirit. This seems an attempt to demystify Hitler, paralleled perhaps by Arendt's concept of the banality of evil. "The Rocking Chair, " a collection of poems, and the novel "The Second Scroll" represent Klein's attempt to come to terms with the post-Holocaust world. Ch. 4 (pp. 61-80), "The Hitleriad: Against the Silence of the Apocalypse, " appeared in "Studies in American Jewish Literature" 9 (1990).

Re-interpretations: Seven studies in nineteenth century German Literature

Stern, J P.
This is a reissue of Professor Stern's distinguished study of German prose from the death of Goethe to the heyday of the Wilhelminian Empire. Professor Stern argues that nineteenth-century German prose is characterized by a particular combination of the prophetic and the archaic, of the existential and the parochial, and is only partially and sometimes not at all related to the social and political realities of the age. In this sense, German literature of the period stands apart from the main stream of European realism and has, for that reason, received little attention from the common reader outside its own country. The book contains studies of Goethe, Grillparzer, Büchner, Schopenhauer, Heine, Stifter and Fontane, all of whom re-interpreted the world from points of view other than that of the common and commonly explored social certainties of their age. Consequently, Professor Stern suggests alternative criteria to the common notion of realism with which to asses their work.

Entrepreneurial vocations: learning from the callings of Augustine, Moses, mothers, Antigone, Oedipus, and Prospero

Krieger, Martin H.
Originally Published by Scholars Press Now Available from Duke University Press In this interdisciplinary work, Martin H. Krieger examines the entrepeneur in terms of modes and ideal figures drawn from religion and classical studies. In so doing, he provides a means or vocabulary with which entrepreneurs can articulate their experience of risk, commitment, and judgment. In addition, by establishing a comparison between the entrepreneur and the figures he utilizes from religious and classical literature, Krieger generates surprising new ways to look at the careers of such traditional figures as St. Augustine, Moses, Oedipus, Antigone, and the characters of Shakespeare's The Tempest. Both an exercise in the humanities and in the pragmatic world of business, Krieger's work offers an intriguing methodology for how humanistic learning can be applied to the real world concerns of the entrepreneur. A teaching and self-study guide to Entrepreneurial Vocation is included as an appendix for those wishing to adopt the text as a classroom resource.
