An immense new power to heal: the promise of personalized medicine

Gutkind, Lee
The successful completion of the Human Genome Project in 2003 created both hope and hype with regard to advancements in medical therapies. The delineation of precise genetic information suggested the possibility of predicting an individual's future health as well as the theoretical ability to intervene and fix it. Nearly a decade later, Gutkind and Kennedy (writers who are well versed in exploring both the technical and personal sides of science and medicine) chronicle the growing pains of personalized medicine, a genomic-driven, individualized type of preventive health care with uniquely targeted treatments. Interviews with researchers, patients, physicians, and others in the genomic business lead the authors to conclude that although personalized medicine has plenty of power and promise, it has a long way to go before becoming the standard of medical care. Sequencing your own genome is already quite accessible and getting cheaper all the time. Managing and making sense of vast amounts of genetic data remain daunting." The Advanced Sleuth Investor Access Your Brain's Hidden Info, to Take Other People's Money

Avner Mandelman
Some information cannot be contained in ink and blips and must always remain physical. This has been found in science, but also applies to investing, where it provides big advantage to investors who investigate companies physically ("sleuthing.") In this book (a follow up on his first), seasoned investing expert Avner Mandelman, relying on recent findings in AI and the latest Nobel Prize winning research, presents case-studies and sleuthing techniques to help the reader take the money of those who haven't read the book. In these studies, written in an engaging style, you will learn from: Chess-playing computers, how a chess-inspired formula picks the best stocks to sleuth Top intel operatives, how to get informers to open up Top Generals, how to discern winner CEOs from mediocre ones Quantum physicists, how to go beyond public data and create your own Brain and AI scientists, how to access the "dark info" inside your own brain Top athletes and top-gun pilots, how to train to win.

Counterfactual thought experiments in world politics: logical, methodological, and psychological perspectives

Philip Eyrikson Tetlock,Aaron Belkin
Political scientists often ask themselves what might have been if history had unfolded differently: if Stalin had been ousted as General Party Secretary or if the United States had not dropped the bomb on Japan. Although scholars sometimes scoff at applying hypothetical reasoning to world politics, the contributors to this volume--including James Fearon, Richard Lebow, Margaret Levi, Bruce Russett, and Barry Weingast--find such counterfactual conjectures not only useful, but necessary for drawing causal inferences from historical data. Given the importance of counterfactuals, it is perhaps surprising that we lack standards for evaluating them. To fill this gap, Philip Tetlock and Aaron Belkin propose a set of criteria for distinguishing plausible from implausible counterfactual conjectures across a wide range of applications. The contributors to this volume make use of these and other criteria to evaluate counterfactuals that emerge in diverse methodological contexts including comparative case studies, game theory, and statistical analysis. Taken together, these essays go a long way toward establishing a more nuanced and rigorous framework for assessing counterfactual arguments about world politics in particular and about the social sciences more broadly.

Social science, technical systems, and cooperative work: beyond the great divide

Geoffrey C. Bowker,Les Gasser,Susan Leigh Star,William Turner
This book is the first to directly address the question of how to bridge what has been termed the ""great divide"" between the approaches of systems developers and those of social scientists to computer supported cooperative work--a question that has been vigorously debated in the systems development literature. Traditionally, developers have been trained in formal methods and oriented to engineering and formal theoretical problems; many social scientists in the CSCW field come from humanistic traditions in which results are reported in a narrative mode. In spite of their differences in style,

Merge--Disciple: two short novels from crosstown to oblivion

Mosley, Walter
"MERGE Raleigh Redman loved Nicci Charbon until she left him heartbroken. Then he hit the lotto for $26 million, quit his minimum wage job and set his sights on one goal: reading the entire collection of lectures in the Popular Educator Library, the only thing his father left behind after he died. As Raleigh is trudging through the eighth volume, he notices something in his apartment that at first seems ordinary but quickly reveals itself to be from a world very different from our own. This entity shows Raleigh joy beyond the comforts of $26 million dollars....and merges our world with those that live beyond. DISCIPLE Hogarth "Trent" Tryman is a forty-two year old man working a dead-end data entry job. Though he lives alone and has no real friends besides his mother, he's grown quite content in his quiet life, burning away time with television, the internet, and video games. That all changes the night he receives a bizarre instant message on his computer from a man who calls himself Bron. At first he thinks it's a joke, but in just a matter of days Hogarth Tryman goes from a data entry clerk to the head of a corporation. His fate is now in very powerful hands as he realizes he has become a pawn in a much larger game with unimaginable stakes--a battle that threatens the prime life force on Earth. "--

Logic and Philosophy in the Lvov—Warsaw School

Jan Wolenski
The Lvov-Warsaw School was active in all spheres of philosophy. Its members worked in the border area between philosophy and disci plines such as psychology, linguistics, and literary theory. But its most important achievements were without doubt in logic and philosophical analysis based on logic. The present book is concerned with fields to which the Lvov-Warsaw School made its most important and famous contributions. Data on the School as a whole are included only in the first and last part of the book. This work is based on my monograph (1985), which appeared in Polish. But it is not merely a translation, because some fragments of the Polish version have been omitted (e. g. , the chapter on ethics), and some have been revised. Many persons helped me in my work on the book in Polish as well as on the present edition. I must first mention the late Izydora D~mbska, to whom this book is dedicated. On various detailed issues I have availed myself of advice and information given to me by Stefan Amsterdamski, Zdzislaw Augustynek, Kazimierz Czarnota, Henryk Hii, Boleslaw Iwanus, Jacek Jadacki, Jacek KabziIiski, Stanislaw Kiczuk, Tomasz Komendzinski, Janina Kotarbinska, Czeslaw Lejewski, Jerzy Perzanowski, Marian Przet~cki, the late Jerzy Slupecki, Klemens Szaniawski, Stefan Zamecki, Zbigniew Zwinogrodzki i Jan Zygmunt. I am indebted to Jaakko Hintikka for suggesting that my book be trans lated into English and published by Reidel. Olgierd Wojtasiewicz helped me to prepare the English text.

Microorganisms to Combat Pollution

E. Rosenberg
This volume contains material first presented at an international workshop on the 'Use of Microorganisms to Combat Pollution', held in Israel, May 10--18, 1992. The workshop was sponsored by the Bat-Sheva de Rothschild Foundation for the Advancement of Science and included microbiologists, biochemists and geneticists from universities, environmental agencies and the military. Each of the contributors to this volume is an ack nowledged expert on the treatment of one or more types of pollution using microorganisms or their enzymes. This book differs from most published symposia proceedings in the breadth of coverage of each subject. Most of the chapters are divided into three parts: (a) A general presentation of the source and toxicity of the pollutant, (b) a review of the current state-of-the-science on the biodegradation of that pollutant and (c) the authors' unique research experiences on the problem. In several examples, the authors have presented data from both laboratory studies and field trials. Thus, the book contains not only the theoretical background on the biodegradation of pollutants, but also practical experiences in applying this knowledge to solving significant pollution problems.

Ligand-receptor energetics: a guide for the perplexed

Klotz, Irving M.
A foundation for quantitative perspectives and a framework for interpreting experimental observations. Researchers in the life sciences who are unaware of the origins of the fundamental concepts and theoretical constructs in ligand-receptor energetics may fail to recognize the hidden assumptions and premises in their interpretations of observed phenomena. This book offers a detailed exposition of these fundamentals and of the treatment of multiple equilibria in successive steps of the binding of ligands to receptors. It also describes the calculations and meanings of energetic quantities for ligand-receptor complexes. Ligand-Receptor Energetics is the only book on this topic that is both accessible to beginners and extremely useful for experienced investigators. It features numerous specific examples; tables of literature results; extensive, up-to-date thermodynamic data; graphical representations of ligand bonding concepts; and four helpful appendices. Topics covered include: * Affinities -from site, stoichiometric, and ghost-site perspectives * Facts and fantasies from graphical analyses * Numerical evaluation of stoichiometric binding constants * Affinity profiles * Thermodynamic perspectives * Forces of interaction * Molecular scenarios. This valuable supplementary text for students in all areas of the basic life sciences is also an excellent professional reference for researchers in biochemistry, molecular biology, physiology, biophysics, microbiology, neurobiology, immunology, pharmacology, endocrinology, and toxicology.

Awesome creation: a study of the first three verses of Genesis, with the aid of modern science

Bitton, Yosef
The first three verses of the Torah are perhaps the best-known sentences of the Hebrew Bible. They may also very well be the least understood. In Awesome Creation, Rabbi Yosef Bitton delves into these verses with an open mind and an open heart. Drawing on classical Jewish sources as well as current scientific data, Rabbi Bitton offers a fresh reading of the initial words of Scripture. Among the subjects covered are the coincidences and differences between the Big Bang theory and the Biblical Creation story, the unexplored consequences of Creation ex nihilo, the controversies surrounding the age of the universe, the state of our planet upon its creation, the natural forces used by the Creator to reshape His world, and the enigma of the nature of primeval light. Throughout his book, Rabbi Bitton emphasizes the importance of an accurate comprehension of Biblical Hebrew, as explained by the Rabbis of the Talmud and the classical Torah commentators. Through a precise understanding of each word of these verses - and thanks to today's modern scientific knowledge - we are able to appreciate, as never before, the beauty and sophistication of the Biblical story of Creation.

Hot talk, cold science: global warming's unfinished debate

Singer, S. Fred
Designed to appeal to lay readers and specialists alike, this concise, scientific analysis refutes the pessimistic global warming scenarios depicted in the media. In addition to covering better-known topics such as the climate record, computer models, and the effects of clouds, oceans, and greenhouse gases, the book also provides an in-depth examination of less frequently discussed issues including the inaccuracies in historical climate data, the limitations of attempting to model climate on computers, solar variability and its impact on climate, and factors that could mitigate any human impacts on world climate. Potential upsides related to global warming and the extreme financial consequences that economically disadvantaged groups and nations would suffer as a result of many of the proposed solutions are identified.

Methods of Modern Mathematical Physics Scattering theory

Michael Reed,Barry Simon
Scattering theory is the study of an interacting system on a scale of time and/or distance which is large compared to the scale of the interaction itself. As such, it is the most effective means, sometimes the only means, to study microscopic nature. To understand the importance of scattering theory, consider the variety of ways in which it arises. First, there are various phenomena in nature (like the blue of the sky) which are the result of scattering. In order to understand the phenomenon (and to identify it as the result of scattering) one must understand the underlying dynamics and its scattering theory. Second, one often wants to use the scattering of waves or particles whose dynamics on knows to determine the structure and position of small or inaccessible objects. For example, in x-ray crystallography (which led to the discovery of DNA), tomography, and the detection of underwater objects by sonar, the underlying dynamics is well understood. What one would like to construct are correspondences that link, via the dynamics, the position, shape, and internal structure of the object to the scattering data. Ideally, the correspondence should be an explicit formula which allows one to reconstruct, at least approximately, the object from the scattering data. The main test of any proposed particle dynamics is whether one can construct for the dynamics a scattering theory that predicts the observed experimental data. Scattering theory was not always so central the physics. Even thought the Coulomb cross section could have been computed by Newton, had he bothered to ask the right question, its calculation is generally attributed to Rutherford more than two hundred years later. Of course, Rutherford's calculation was in connection with the first experiment in nuclear physics.

Prejudice and the Old Politics The Presidential Election of 1928

Allan J. Lichtman
Combining statistical analysis with well-written narrative history, this re-evaluation of the 1928 presidential election gives a vivid portrait of the candidates and the campaign. Lichtman has based his study primarily on a statistical analysis of data from that election and the presidential elections from 1916 to 1940 for all the 2,058 counties outside the former Confederate South. Not relying exclusively on the results of his quantitative analysis, however, Lichtman has also made an exhaustive survey of previous scholarship and contemporary accounts of the 1928 election. He discusses and challenges previous interpretations, especially the ethnocultural and pluralist interpretations and the application of critical election theory to the election. In disputing this theory, which claims that 1928 was a realigning election in which the coalitions were formed that dominated future elections, Lichtman determines that 1928 was an aberration with little impact on later political patterns.

Husserl, intentionality and cognitive science

Hubert L. Dreyfus
As this book makes clear, current use of data structures such as frames, scripts, and stereotypes in psychology, artificial intelligence, and all the other disciplines now grouped together as Cognitive Science develop ideas already explored by Husserl who believed that the analysis of mental representations was the proper subject of philosophy, psychology, and other disciplines that deal with the mind. This new anthology will serve as an ideal introduction to phenomenology for analytic philosophers, both as a text and as the single most useful source book on Husserl for cognitive scientists.Hubert L. Dreyfus is Professor of Philosophy at the University of California at Berkeley. He is author of the best-selling and controversial book, What Computers Can't Do. Harrison Hall, who has collaborated with Dreyfus on much of the book, is on the philsophy faculty at the University of Delaware. An MIT Press/Bradford Book.
