Speak Low (When You Speak Love) The Letters of Kurt Weill and Lotte Lenya

Kurt Weill
Not since perhaps Eleanor and Franklin has there been so provocative a public pair: fiercely independent and yet codependent, they spent twenty-five years discovering a way they could live together after they figured out that they couldn't live apart. In 1932 they separated; in 1933 they divorced. They reunited in Paris in 1935 and then went to New York; in 1937 they remarried and together applied for American citizenship. Except for brief periods of separation, their relationship remained what it had always been, simultaneously tenacious and tumultuous. Yet Weill and Lenya required one another on a creative level that transcended ordinary emotional, erotic, and professional bonds. Although she was musically untrained, Lenya's canny theatrical sensitivity and innate intelligence enabled her to become Weill's most trusted critic as well as his most famous interpreter, especially as Jenny in The Threepenny Opera. As Weill rhapsodized, "When I feel this longing for you, I think most of all of the sound of your voice, which I love like a very force of nature." The letters are filled with artistic news, reactions to world events, reports on work-in-progress, and reflections on the creative process and the experience of exile. We get a backstage view of German music and theater, the American musical theater in the late thirties and forties, and the Hollywood studios. Together Kurt Weill and Lotte Lenya have come to symbolize what was most vibrant about the experiment of Weimar culture in the Golden Twenties and what was most vital among the contributions to American culture by Central European emigres.

Broadway Nights

Seth Rudetsky
It’s been said (actually, it’s been sung), that when a Broadway baby says goodnight, it’s early in the morning. But what about those Broadway nights? The thrill of being on stage, the adulation, the applause, the stage door fanatics… Stephen Sherrin has no such life. Sure, he dallies on the Great White Way, but when he does have a job it’s beneath the stage, subbing in the orchestra pit. Other parts of his life are the pits, too—including his love life. Why does he always date men who already have boyfriends? But now Stephen has been given the chance of a lifetime: to be the music director on a brand-new, Broadway-bound show. He couldn’t be happier. Trouble is, Stephen doesn’t do happiness well.

Meditations on Crime

Harper Simon
"Everyone is fascinated by crime." "When you look at the history of song, romantic love songs may be the dominant mode of songwriting, but second would probably be songs involving crime--murder ballads, political protest songs; crime is a major theme in all songwriting," says Harper Simon. He offers a new and expansive contribution to this legacy with Meditations on Crime , an ambitious multi-media project that includes an album he produced of musical collaborations with a sweeping range of contributors (Julia Holter, Gang Gang Dance, King Khan, the Sun Ra Arkestra) and a book he edited featuring essays by such notables as Miranda July, Hooman Majd, and Jerry Stahl, alongside artwork from giants like Cindy Sherman, Tracey Emin, Julian Schnabel, and Raymond Pettibon. The genesis of Meditations on Crime came in 2016 as the confluence of several ideas. Simon was interested in collaborating with musicians he knew and admired, to create a vinyl LP with an accompanying book--"a beautiful physical object to stand outside the digital world." Given what America was going through during that particular election year, though, he also thought it was a time that called for something more politically charged. Meditations on Crime --if you get down to it, crime is politics and politics is crime, so crime can go a lot of different ways. It seemed to be a way of approaching the moment that was a little more subtle and left space to explore." The songs were developed in a variety of ways: Sometimes Simon sent his collaborators guitar tracks or demos he was working on and had them write over that, sometimes he collaborated on lyrics. On the Sun Ra Arkestra track, he composed melodic themes and went to the group's home base of Philadelphia with the legendary producer Hal Willner, where they fleshed out two songs (Willner passed away in 2020 from Covid; "to have that creative moment with him makes it really touching for me," says Simon. As he reached out to more musicians ("I kind of just went with my gut, and one person led to the next"), Simon retained a consistent backing band for most of the tracks to keep some cohesion. He played most of the guitars, with Paz Lenchantin from the Pixies on bass and Carla Azar, who has played with everyone from Jack White to PJ Harvey to The Who, on drums, as well as members of Ariel Pink's band and Nick Zinner from the Yeah Yeah Yeah's. For the book, Simon points to "On Crime," the essay by Nigerian novelist and poet Ben Okri, as a central piece. "It almost felt like an introduction because it was so philosophical," he says. "It really set the tone and the book started to become less political and more interesting. Once that tone was set, you could go to this beautiful essay on war crimes by Janine di Giovanni, the famous foreign correspondent. You could see it go to a humorous piece by Jerry Stahl or an interview with Kenneth Anger. Wayne Kramer from the MC5 has a foundation called Jail Guitar Doors that brings musical instruments and songwriting to prisoners, and has spent time in prison himself, so I thought he would have an interesting perspective."

Film Music and Everything Else

Bernstein, Charles H.
The author, Charles Bernstein, is a Hollywood composer who has written music for countless movies and television films. In this book, he goes beyond the world of film music to explore how the creative process works in our culture. The writing is accessible, easy to read, often witty, and should appeal to anyone interested in creativity, films, music, or just a good read. Some questions considered in this book: What is inspiration? Where does music come from? Can music heal? What is originality? Can limitations free us? What can silence teach us? Why do melodies haunt us? The topics of the chapters are wide ranging, covering such diverse subjects as architecture, food, fashion, love, magic, psychology, religion and medicine. But the underlying themes are common to all of us—music, life, spirit and the struggles faced by all creative people. This book is, as the title says, about Film Music And Everything Else.

The last waltz: the Strauss dynasty and Vienna

Suchet, John
"Captured in a beautiful package, including more than fifty color photographs, The Last Waltz tells the intriguing story of of the Viennese Strauss family known for producing some of the best known, best loved music of the nineteenth century. Johann and Josef Strauss, the Waltz Kings, composed hundreds of instantly recognizable and enduring melodies, including The Blue Danube Waltz, Tales from the Vienna Woods, Voices of Spring and The Radetzky March. Their iconic music has been featured on the scores of nearly a thousand films. Yet despite their success, this was a family riven with tension, feuds and jealousy, living in a country that was undergoing seismic upheaval. Through the personal and political chaos, the Strauss family continued to compose music to which the Viennese -- anxious to forget their troubles -- could dance and drank champagne, even as their country hurtled towards oblivion at the hands of the First World War. Classical music expert and radio host John Suchet skillfully portrays this gripping story, capturing the family dramas, the tensions, triumphs and disasters against the turbulent backdrop of Austria in the nineteenth century, from revolution to regicide." --

And you shall know us by the trail of our vinyl: the Jewish past as told by the records we have loved and lost

Bennett, Roger
What started out as a mutual affinity for kitschy Jewish album covers-think Neil Diamond baring his chest hair on the cover of "Hot August Night "or Barbra Streisand in hot pants on the cover of "Streisand Superman"-soon became a quest for identity, history, and culture between the grooves of LPs. Together, Roger Bennett and Josh Kun embarked on a thrilling journey, scouring the world to collect thousands of vinyl LPs from attics, garage sales, and dusty archives. Pieced together, these scratched, once-loved and now-forgotten audio gems tell a vibrant tale: the story of Jews in America. "And You Shall Know Us by the Trail of Our Vinyl" spans the history of Jewish recorded music from the 1940s to the 1980s, weaving an account that begins with sacred songs and ends with the holy trinity of Neil, Barbra, and Barry. The LPs found here are also a love letter to forgotten moments in Jewish American pop history, celebrating well-dressed cantors singing Christmas tunes, Long Island suburbanites dancing the mambo, and Chassidic prog-rockers. The music, much of which is no longer available in any format, is brought to life through commentary from writers Aimee Bender, Etgar Keret, Michael Wex, and Shalom Auslander; performers Sandra Bernhard and Motown legend Lamont Dozier; music critics Oliver Wang and Anne Powers; and TV pioneer Norman Lear. A gateway to a forgotten kingdom of sound, the good, the bad, and the ugly of Jewish vinyl gives this aspect of Jewish culture the attention it so richly deserves.

Psalms

Joy Ladin
These psalms grow out of a decades-long fascination with the biblical psalms, particularly the Davidic psalms, which portray the tempestuous, sometimes awful intimacy of the Divine-human relationship. In the lightning-shot Psalm-space where Divine meets human, time shatters, splits, leaps like a river, and so does the soul of the speaker, now hunting God, now hunted, now languishing in despair, now reclining in quiet triumph against the pillars of Heavens. These contemporary psalms attempt to create a corollary to that biblical psalm space, a space narrowed to a single room in which God and the speaker have no choice but to face and struggle toward one another through the whirlwind of pain and love.
