The Maltese dreambook

Levin, Gabriel
With Jerusalem as its epicentre, The Maltese Dreambook extends Gabriel Levin’s quarter-century-long ramble through the Levant, his adopted homeland. On a Greek island, in the desert wastes of southern Jordan and in Malta, whose Stone Age temples serve as a backdrop to the title poem, this collection abounds in unforeseen encounters that blur the borders between the phantasmal and the real, the modern and the archaic, the rational and the imaginary. Gabriel Levin was born in France, grew up in the United States, and has been living in Jerusalem since 1972. He has published two collections of poetry, Sleepers of Beulah (1992) and Ostraca (1999) and several translations from the Hebrew, French and Arabic, including a selection of Yehuda Halevi’s poetry, Poems from the Diwan (Anvil, 2002). He is one of the founding editors of Ibis Editions, a small press established in Jerusalem in 1997 and dedicated to the publication, in English, of literature from the Levant.

Transformation in the Writing: A Case of Surrender-and-Catch

K H Wolff
Transformation in the Writing, A Case of Surrender-and-Catch further develops the concepts first presented in Surrender and Catch (1976) and applied to sociology and its history in Survival and Sociology (1991) and autobiography in O Loma! (1989). This idea involves the recognition of the unprecedented nature of the present time in the history of humankind and the planet, a time when we ourselves, rather than Nature or the Deity, can annihilate both ourselves and our planet. Surrender' is nonlinguistic (or prelinguistic), prepredicative', prephenomenal', and involves suspending or bracketing' the world, calling it into question. This is the best any individual can do, in view of the point of crisis at which we are now. In Transformation in the Writing Wolff explores how his hypothesis of Surrender(-and-Catch) bears on aspects of autobiography (emigre status, field work), sociology of knowledge, poetry, phenomenology, hermeneutics, critical theory, and on attitudes to our time.

The Art of Thomas Rose

Thomas Rose
I paint with acrylic and oil paint on canvas, I use gold leaf and glazes in many works, I often write poetry to accompany my paintings. I paint many subjects from birds and patriotic art, to marriage equality. Most of the images and ideas I use are taken from real life, the birds that walk around my pond, the fabric of my mother's dress, the wallpaper in her bedroom. I use imagery that I have drawn from memories of growing up in Boston, Lady Liberty, Uncle Sam, weathervanes and antiques, geometrics from the nineteen seventies and eighties, rain running down a pane of glass. The poems I write may be reflective of my artwork or reflective of my life experience. I have exhibited my art in Boston and Vero Beach, Florida for; Art Ark, Dale Sorensen, Vero Beach Museum of Art, The Regina Stark Gallery and President Obama. In 2012 I was asked by the Democratic Party and Forward America to exhibit nine of my paintings for President Obama's election, that exhibit ran for several months here in Vero Beach, Florida, something I am very proud of. I have since created two paintings for President and Mrs. Obama I have spent my life like most people in America, working full time and taking care of my home and family. It wasn't until the year 2011 that I was able to make the commitment to paint and write full time. Three years later, the result of that commitment is "The Art of Thomas Rose." My hope is that "The Art of Thomas Rose" brings enjoyment to the reader and encourages free thought about life and love. We are all beautiful people, deserving of love, respect and understanding. I hope you enjoy my book. As always, peace and love. Tom

Tamil: a biography

Shulman, David Dean
This book explores two millennia of south Indian Tamil civilization, with a special emphasis on the way Tamil speakers and literati understood the unique features of their language and the major cultural themes articulated in Tamil over this long time span. Tamil is one of the great world languages, with its 80 million speakers, its ancient, classical past, and the profound richness of its cultural traditions, which spread throughout South Asia and beyond to Sri Lanka and Southeast Asia and, today, to a large Tamil Diaspora scattered around the globe. Presented in the format of a south Indian musical composition, the chapters take the reader through the whole of Tamil cultural history, from its beginnings at the end of the first millennium B.C. through the stunning poems of love and war known as "Sangam Poetry", the burst of intense religious movements in the mid-first-millennium A.D., the Chola period of imperial expansion, and into late-medieval and modern times, including present-day Tamil politics and the vast cultural production of Chennai, Madurai, and Tanjavur. The treasures of the Tamil language deserve a wide audience--thus the book is aimed at readers with no special knowledge of India no less than at speakers and connoisseurs of Tamil. Translated verses and spicy stories of poets, lovers, musicians, warriors and kings fill the pages of this book, which paints a wide-angle, panoramic canvas of one of the most creative civilizations in the history of South Asia as it evolved and transformed itself from the distant past up to our own generation.--
