Religion in five minutes

Aaron W. Hughes,Russell T. McCutcheon
"Religion in Five Minutes provides an accessible and lively introduction to the questions about religious beliefs, behaviours, and institutions that interest many of us, whether or not we personally identify with a religion. The second edition of Religion in Five Minutes includes all of the entries from the first but enlarges that volume -now with 100 answers to common questions, focusing much of the new material on issues of relevance to religion in Europe. Because each chapter can be read in about five minutes, the book is an ideal supplementary resource for classes but also an engaging read for those curious about the world around them"--

The light of the world: astronomy in al-Andalus

Joseph Ibn Naḥmias (Astronomer)
"This book contains an edition--with an extensive introduction, translation and commentary--of The Light of the World, a text on theoretical astronomy by Joseph Ibn Naḥmias, composed in Judeo-Arabic around 1400 C.E. in the Iberian Peninsula. As the only text on theoretical astronomy written by a Jew in any variety of Arabic, this work is evidence for a continuing relationship between Jewish and Islamic thought in the late fourteenth and early fifteenth centuries. The text's most lasting effect may have been exerted via its passage to Renaissance Italy, where it influenced scholars at the University of Padua in the early sixteenth century. With its crucial role in the development of European astronomy, as well as the physical sciences under Islam and in Jewish culture, The Light of the World is an important episode in Islamic intellectual history, Jewish civilization, and the history of astronomy."--

Homelands and Diasporas: Greeks, Jews and Their Migrations

Rozen, Minna
The Greek and Jewish diasporas are the most significant diasporas of Western civilisation. "Homelands and Diasporas" is the first book to explore the similarities and differences between these two experiences. In the process it sheds fascinating light on their fundamental importance for both Greek and Jewish societies. The authors examine Greek and Jewish diasporas throughout history, from classical and Biblical times to the present, and all over the world - in Greece, the Balkans, Turkey, Russia, the Near and Middle East, Spain and the US. They analyse the very nature of diaspora, examining both the Greek concept of noble expansion and the Jewish idea of enforced exile, and analyse community structures as well as social and religious networks, combining Scriptural analysis with cultural and political history. Diaspora is a difficult and emotive concept but "Homelands and Diasporas" offers a balanced and perceptive guide to the connected histories of these two peoples away from their homelands.

Prophecy: the history of an idea in medieval Jewish philosophy

Kreisel, Howard Theodore
More than any other topic, prophecy represents the point at which the Divine meets the human, the Absolute meets the relative. How can a human being attain the Word of God? In what manner does God, when conceived as eternal and transcendent, address corporeal, transitory creatures? What happens to God's divine Truth when it is beheld by minds limited in their power to apprehend, and influenced by the intellectual currents of their time and place? How were these issues viewed by the great Jewish philosophers of the past, who took the divine communication and all it entails seriously, while at the same time desired to understand it as much as humanly possible in the course of dealing with a myriad of other issues that occupied their attention? This book offers an in-depth study of prophecy in the thought of seven of the leading medieval Jewish philosophers: R. Saadiah Gaon, R. Judah Halevi, Maimonides, Gersonides, R. Hasdai Crescas, R. Joseph Albo and Baruch Spinoza. It attempts to capture the `original voice' of these thinkers by looking at the intellectual milieus in which they developed their philosophies, and by carefully analyzing their views in their textual contexts. It also deals with the relation between the earlier approaches and the later ones. Overall, this book presents a significant model for narrating the history of an idea.

The Admiral's Log: God, Man, Rights, Government

Moreell, Ben
The Admiral's Log: God, Man, Rights, Government is a book written by Ben Moreell that explores the relationship between these four concepts. Moreell, a former admiral in the US Navy and founder of the American Liberty League, argues that the foundation of human rights is the belief in God, and that government's role is to protect these rights. The book is a collection of essays and speeches that Moreell gave throughout his career, including his thoughts on the Cold War, communism, and the role of the military in society. The Admiral's Log is a thought-provoking read that challenges readers to consider the role of government and the importance of individual rights in a free society.A Compilation Of Speeches. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. On Divine Providence Or Universal Nature

David Nieto
Product description On Divine Providence or Universal Nature is a classic book of Judaism that breathes a new life more than 300 years after its first appearance in Judeo-Spanish, the romance language of Sephardic Jews. The play, written by David Nieto, now available in English, features two characters who revolve around the controversy provoked by Nieto's lecture stating that "God is nature and nature is God." Simon misunderstands the quote of the "heretic rabbi" as a comparison, or pantheism, whereas Reuben reconciles and differentiates various types of nature, providences, and miracles according to Jewish thought.

The New Story of Value in Response to Existential Risk Mythologize, Don't Pathologize: Living Your Sacred Autobiography: from Global Intimacy Disorder to Unique Self Symphonies

Marc Gafni
We are desperately in need of a new Story-specifically a new Story of Value, an Outrageous Love Story-as a way to meet the outrageous pain of the world. This is the only true response to the current meta-crisis, the amalgamation of interlocking political, educational, spiritual, ecological, and cultural crises that threatens not merely the total disruption of all social systems, but either the death of humanity or the death of our humanity. This series of oral essays outlines the contours of a new Story of Value. Most importantly, they clearly show how we-both individually and collectively-can transform our lives and become an "imaginal cell," an ontological activist, for the sake of the whole. Through profound "writual" practices like writing a Sacred Autobiography and composing Outrageous Love Letters, we start to move from a pathologized life to a mythic life. We begin to play our instruments as part of Unique Self Symphony. We become Homo amor, the New Human and the New Humanity, irreducibly unique incarnations of Eros, of the Intimate Cosmos that lives in, as us, and through us-for the sake of Reality itself. These oral essays are based on talks delivered by Marc at the Eros Mystery School at Kasteel de Berckt in Baarlo, Netherlands, August 2019.

Pseudo-Hecataeus on the Jews: legitimizing the Jewish diaspora

Bar-Kochva, Bezalel
Debate over the authenticity of "On the Jews" has persisted for nearly 1,900 years. Bezalel Bar-Kochva attempts to overcome this stalemate in his finely detailed and convincingly argued study that proves the forgery of the book and suggests not only a source for the text, but also a social, political, and cultural setting that explains its conception. Bar-Kochva argues that the author of this treatise belonged to the moderate conservative Jews of Alexandria, whose practices were contrary to the contemporary trends of Hellenistic Judaism. They rejected the application of Greek philosophy and allegorical interpretations of the Holy scriptures and advocated the use of Pentateuch Hebrew as the language for educating and for religious services. They showed a keen interest in Judea and identified themselves with the Jews of the Holy Land. "On the Jews," then, was the manifesto of this group and was written at the peak period of the Hasmonean kingdom. Its main purpose was to legitimize Jewish residence in Egypt, despite being explicitly prohibited in the Pentateuch, and to justify the continued residence of Jews there in a time of prosperity and expansion of the Jewish independent state.
