Struve, liberal on the left, 1870-1905

Pipes, Richard
More than anyone else in his time, Struve was the master of history, journalism, economics, international relations, and practical politics. A scholar and activist, he helped found the Marxist movement in Russia, initiated Marxist Revisionism there, and launched Lenin's career, and he was the theoretician and a cofounder of the Constitutional Democratic Party. In writing about Struve, Richard Pipes turns biography into history. He lays bare the split soul of the Russian intellectuals--their irresponsibility, unwillingness to compromise, intolerance. Struve, the liberal turned conservative, preached to his countrymen physical and spiritual freedom based on law. He was a Westerner in his championing of social reform, legality, private property, and a vigorous state and foreign policy. This long and rich tradition of liberal-conservatism is recounted against the background of a "monstrous growth of political claims on the individual that caused intellectual and moral independence increasingly to be punished with ostracism, confinement, exile, and death."

A general theory of equilibrium selection in games

Harsanyi, John C.
The authors, two of the most prominent game theorists of this generation, havedevoted a number of years to the development of the theory presented here, and to its economicapplications. They propose rational criteria for selecting one particular uniformly perfectequilibrium point as the solution of any noncooperative game. And, because any cooperative game canbe remodelled as a noncooperative bargaining game, their theory defines a one-point solution for anycooperative game as well.By providing solutions - based on the same principles of rational behavior- for all classes of games, both cooperative and noncooperative, both those with complete and withincomplete information, Harsanyi and Selten's approach achieves a remarkable degree of theoreticalunification for game theory as a whole and provides a deeper insight into the nature ofgame-theoretic rationality. The book applies this theory to a number of specific game classes, suchas unanimity games; bargaining with transaction costs; trade involving one seller and severalbuyers; two-person bargaining with incomplete information on one side, and on both sides. The lastchapter discusses the relationship of the authors' theory to other recently proposed solutionconcepts, particularly the Kohberg-Mertens stability theory.John C. Convex analysis and beyond. Volume I. Basic theory

Mordukhovich, B. Sh,Nguyen, Mau Nam
This book presents a unified theory of convex functions, sets, and set-valued mappings in topological vector spaces with its specifications to locally convex, Banach and finite-dimensional settings. These developments and expositions are based on the powerful geometric approach of variational analysis, which resides on set extremality with its characterizations and specifications in the presence of convexity. Using this approach, the text consolidates the device of fundamental facts of generalized differential calculus to obtain novel results for convex sets, functions, and set-valued mappings in finite and infinite dimensions. It also explores topics beyond convexity using the fundamental machinery of convex analysis to develop nonconvex generalized differentiation and its applications. The text utilizes an adaptable framework designed with researchers as well as multiple levels of students in mind. It includes many exercises and figures suited to graduate classes in mathematical sciences that are also accessible to advanced students in economics, engineering, and other applications. In addition, it includes chapters on convex analysis and optimization in finite-dimensional spaces that will be useful to upper undergraduate students, whereas the work as a whole provides an ample resource to mathematicians and applied scientists, particularly experts in convex and variational analysis, optimization, and their applications.

The Great Question

LEOPOLD STENNETT. AMERY
The Great Question: Tariff Reform or Free Trade? by Leopold Stennett Amery delves into the complex economic debate surrounding trade policies in early 20th-century Britain. Amery, a prominent political figure, presents a detailed analysis of the merits and drawbacks of tariff reform versus the traditional policy of free trade. This work explores the potential impacts of different trade strategies on British industries, employment, and the nation's overall economic prosperity. Offering insights into the historical context of the era, “The Great Question†provides a valuable resource for understanding the foundations of modern trade discussions. Readers interested in economic history, political economy, and the evolution of British trade policy will find Ameryâ€(TM)s arguments both insightful and historically significant. Community impact evaluation

Lichfield, Nathaniel
This is a work summarizing in one volume the pioneering approach of the author to public-interest decision-taking in the field of urban & regional planning. This book is aimed at students, researchers and professionals in planning. Nathaniel Lichfield first introduced in his "Economics of Planned Development" the concept that, in any use and development of land, the traditional "development balance sheet" of the developers needed to be accompanied by a "planning balance sheet" prepared by the planning officer or planning authority. Over the forty years since this work was published, the author has brought to the operational level the "planning balance sheet", with many case studies, primarily for consultancy purposes. The present title reflects the incorporation during the 1970s of the then emerging field of environmental impact assessment.

Essays on ethics, social behavior, and scientific explanation

Harsanyi, John C.
When John Harsanyi came to Stanford University as a candidate for the Ph.D., I asked him why he was bothering, since it was most un likely that he had anything to learn from us. He was already a known scho lar; in addition to some papers in economics, the first two papers in this vol ume had already been published and had dazzled me by their originality and their combination of philosophical insight and technical competence. However, I am very glad I did not discourage him; whether he learned any thing worthwhile I don't know, but we all learned much from him on the foundations of the theory of games and specifically on the outcome of bar gaining. The central focus of Harsanyi's work has continued to be in the theory of games, but especially on the foundations and conceptual problems. The theory of games, properly understood, is a very broad approach to social interaction based on individually rational behavior, and it connects closely with fundamental methodological and substantive issues in social science and in ethics. An indication of the range of Harsanyi's interest in game the ory can be found in the first paper of Part B -though in fact his owncontri butions are much broader-and in the second paper the applications to the methodology of social science. The remaining papers in that section show more specifically the richness of game theory in specific applications.

Continuity And Change In Rural Russia A Geographical Perspective

Ioffe, G. V.
Contrary to the viewpoint of many Western scholars, the authors of this penetrating analysis argue that private farming is not a viable option in Russia's future. Instead, a convergence of Soviet-style subsidiary farming with traditional and reorganized collective farms is the most plausible path of evolution in most rural areas.Grigory Ioffe and Tatyana Nefedova arrive at this conclusion by a careful examination of ongoing reform efforts in Russian agriculture against the backdrop of European and Russian agrarian history and rural spatial development since the late nineteenth century. The comparisons at the national level are then filled in with consideration of a number of Russian provinces (oblasti) and regions (raiony). Their research reveals the substantial negative impact of rural depopulation on the Russian agrarian economy. Seventy original maps richly complement and support the narrative.
