On repentance

Soloveitchik, Joseph Dov
"The subject of repentance, or teshuvah, captivated Rabbi Soloveitchik's imagination, and it is easy to understand why. As a transformation of the personality in response to the divinewill, teshuvah uncovers the depths of human nature and of man's relationship with God.In addressing repentance, Rabbi Soloveitchik confronted questions such as: Can a person change? Is one s personality static or dynamic? What is the relationship between reason and emotion, between sin and suffering, between guilt and growth, past and future, free will and causality? How is one to approach God with love or fear, as an individual or as part of a community, appealing to grace or justice, with a sense of self-nullification or self-worth?Given the issues raised, it is no wonder that some of Rabbi Soloveitchik's most religiously powerful and psychologically penetrating insights appear in his discussions of repentance. This classic volume speaks to the sensitive and searching soul not just during the days of penitence but throughout the entire year."--Back cover.

Plan B A Novel

Jonathan Tropper
Turning thirty was never supposed to be like this. Ten years ago, Ben, Lindsey, Chuck, Alison, and Jack graduated from New York University and went out into the world, fresh-faced and full of dreams for the future. But now Ben's getting a divorce; Lindsey's unemployed; Alison and Chuck seem stuck in ruts of their own making; and Jack is getting more publicity for his cocaine addiction than his multimillion-dollar Hollywood successes. Suddenly, turning thirty-- past the age their parents were when they were born, older than every current star athlete or pop music sensation-- seems to be both more meaningful and less than they'd imagined ten years ago. Jonathan Tropper's wonderful debut novel is about more than friendship, love, celebrity, addiction, kidnapping, or even turning thirty-- it's a heartfelt comic riff on what it means to be an adult against your will, to be single when you thought you'd have a family, to discover you are not, in fact, immortal, and to learn that Star Wars is as good a life lesson today as it was when you were six years old.

Denial My 25 Years Without a Soul

Jonathan Rauch
A young boy sitting on a piano bench realizes one day that he will never marry. At the time this seems merely a simple, if odd, fact, but as his attraction to boys grows stronger, he is pulled into a vortex of denial. Not just for one year or even ten, but for 25 years, he lives in an inverted world, a place like a photographic negative, where love is hate, attraction is envy, and childhood never ends. He comes to think of himself as a kind of monster--until one day, seemingly miraculously, the world turns itself upright and the possibility of love floods in. Equal parts Oliver Sacks and George Orwell, with a dash of Woody Allen, Jonathan Rauch's memoir is by turns harrowing and funny, a grippingly intimate journey through a bizarre maze of self-torment that ends with an unexpected discovery. Many people, gay and straight, have lived through their own versions of this story, seeking to twist their personality in directions it just wouldn't go. Not all have been lucky enough to escape. First published in 2013, Denial has been revised for this new edition, which includes a new afterword by the author.

Master of ceremonies: a memoir

Grey, Joel,Paley, Rebecca
"Joel Grey, the Academy Award-winning master of ceremonies in Cabaret, finally tells his remarkable life story. Born Joel David Katz to a wild and woolly Jewish-American family in 1930's Cleveland, Joel began his life in the theater at the age of nine, starring in local productions of touring Broadway hits. He was hooked, and the search for the spotlight took him from the Cleveland Playhouse to seedy, gangster-filled nightclubs in Chicago, and finally to the lights of Broadway and the dizzying glamour of Hollywood. Master of Ceremonies is a memoir of a life lived in and out of the limelight, but it is also the story of the man behind the makeup. Coming of age in a time when being yourself tended to be not only difficult but also dangerous, Joel was required to act both on and off stage. Deftly capturing the pain and secrets of an era we have only just started to leave behind, Joel's story is one of love, loss, hard-won honesty, redemption, and success"--

The Velveteen Father; an unexpected journey to parenthood

Jesse Green
Journalist Jesse Green's delightful memoir makes it quite clear that the pleasures and perils of parenting are always the same--even for a gay 37-year-old man who stumbles into it by falling in love with a person who has an adopted son. As Green puts it in a typically well-turned phrase, "fatherhood trumps gayness," which is to say that heterosexual parents at the playground sometimes find it easier to relate to Green, his boyfriend, Andy, and son, Erez (soon joined by baby brother Lucas), than do the well-buffed, perennially youthful male guests at a Fire Island party--they flinch at the sight of diapers and baby bags. As the author searchingly and intelligently considers what it means to gay people to become parents, and the ways in which it does and does not pull them closer into the mainstream, his narrative is often extremely funny. (Joking about Erez's apparently heterosexual inclinations, Green deadpans, "We tried our We played him Judy Garland records and showed him tapes of West Side Story .") A very moving examination of identity and the making of a meaningful adult life that resonates profoundly for people of every sexual orientation. --Wendy Smith

Poltergeist In Ful Score

Jerry Goldsmith
Steven Spielberg once referred to Poltergeist as his 'land Jaws.' "Terror is relentless, and the terror is unseen in both movies", he added. Despite Tobe Hooper's credit as director, Spielberg oversaw several aspects of Poltergeist's production and post-production. Scheduling conflicts between this film and E.T The Extra-Terrestrial meant John Williams couldn't write the score. Thankfully, Spielberg turned to Jerry Goldsmith, who was experiencing a career peak, composing several high-profile scores to successful films. The key to the score's success is how it first establishes the strong bond of the Freeling family. The composer noted, "Poltergeist is not a horror picture; Poltergeist is a love story, a scary love story." Goldsmith composed a lullaby to represent Carol Anne. With the emotional core of the music in place, Goldsmith cleverly combined ambitious and complex music for the supernatural events that center on this quiet suburban house. As the drama unfolds, Goldsmith introduces vicious tritone figures to represent the malevolent spirits. A wordless choir underscores the grand mystery lurking on the 'other side.' Goldsmith expertly weaves many disparate themes while still maintraining a cohesive musical narrative. The music simultaneously supports the drama and creates a score that is an enjoyable listening experience on its own. His ability to blend sophisticated orchestral techniques while maintaining a sense of musical continuity earned the composer an Academy Arward nomination.

The Griffin Sisters' greatest hits: a novel

Weiner, Jennifer
"Cassie and Zoe Griffin were born just a year apart, but the sisters could not have been more different. Zoe, beautiful and charming, grew up with a burning desire for fame, making up for a lack of natural talent with hard work and determination. Cassie, though, had a gift. She was uncomfortable in her plus-sized body and preferred to be in the shadows, she was a musical prodigy. On the threshold of adulthood, the sisters are discovered by a record label and become the Griffin Sisters, a band that quickly skyrockets to fame, reaching the heights of pop stardom: MTV, VH1, the Billboard charts, and every marker of a dream come true. Cassie's musical gifts make her the voice of a generation and while the spotlight tests her spirit, it also opens her heart to possibilities for connection she has never considered. Zoe gets everything she thought she wanted: international fame and the paparazzi, the couture-and the man-that go with it. But twenty years later, everything has changed. Cassie lives in seclusion in Alaska. Zoe has abandoned her music dreams for suburban motherhood in New Jersey. The Griffin Sisters are long gone, and the devil's bargain of celebrity has exacted a high price that drives the sisters apart and nearly destroys them both. And yet Zoe's teenage daughter Cherry has inherited her family's talent and stage presence, and will stop at nothing to achieve the very dream of pop stardom her mother has warned her against-opening the wounds of their shared history in the process. Both sisters must face the consequences of choices from the past: the ones they made and the ones the music industry made for them. Can the mistakes of the past be redeemed, and can broken bonds be repaired? In this stirring and soul-bearing novel, Jennifer Weiner brings to life the heartache, joy, and glory of the glamorous but shattering Golden Age of pop music, and a celebrates the power of love and forgiveness, even after the music stops"--

Sea queens: women pirates around the world

Yolen, Jane
In 1963 Jane Yolen released a book called PIRATES IN PETTICOATS, because the idea of women as pirates fascinated her--but there wasn't much information about these women who made their livelihoods plundering on the high seas. Scholars have dug up a bounty of new information since then, and Jane, still fascinated, revisits the ladies who loot. Discover such great pirates as Artemisia, the Admiral Queen of Persia who sailed the seas from 500 to 480 BC. At one point there was a 10,000 drachma prize for anyone who could capture her. There was Rachel Wall, who ran away from her strict upbringing and became a murderous pirate terrorizing the waters of the Atlantic coastline of America. She was hanged for her deeds. Possibly the most famous woman pirate of all was Grania O'Malley, daughter of an Irish chieftain. She plagued the English and was arrested several times, always gaining her freedom to pirate some more. Meet ten other female pirates on their ships, in battle, and in disguise in this intriguing look at the wayward women of the waves. Christine Joy Pratt's pen-and-ink illustrations are alive with action and excitement. Here be a true and accurate account of the most low-down, scurviest--but the prettiest--black-hearted pirates you'll ever love to read about.
