Beautiful death: Jewish poetry and martyrdom in medieval France

Einbinder, Susan
Discusses medieval poetry in Hebrew (plus one example in Old French) dealing with martyrdom in the face of forced conversion. Deals with the ideal of Jewish resistance to persecution, but notes also the influence of Christian culture on Jewish literature. Focuses on Jewish martyrs in Blois, Troyes, and Paris. Notes how Talmud burnings impacted on the literature, reflected in the idea of the immortality of both the Jews and their books. Elucidates how the literature, often directed at the educated Jewish elite (the Tosafists and their pupils), reflected ideals of Jewish life as well as death. Suggests the latter ideal may have led most Ashkenazi Jews to prefer "Kiddush Hashem" or exile to conversion, when faced with that choice.

Far from the promised land? being Jewish in New Zealand

Beaglehole, Ann
This study is largely based on 93 interviews conducted in the 1990s with current or ex-New Zealand Jews of widely differing backgrounds. Ch. 5 (pp. 85-99) discusses antisemitism (as do pp. 15-18, 28-30 in ch. 1). Jews in New Zealand (who in 1991 numbered 3,048 or 0.1% of the total population) generally have kept a low profile. Most of the interviewees view present-day antisemitism as slight, despite some anti-Jewish Christian attitudes. Four types of antisemitism are noted: ignorant, petty (e.g. jokes), political (including anti-Zionist and anti-Israel), and malicious (including vandalism and Holocaust denial). Local Jews have been cautious in responding to antisemitism, though there has been some effort to speak out. While the identities of survivors and their descendants have been strongly affected by the Holocaust, those of other new Zealand Jews have not. Commemoration of the Holocaust has been much more modest than in Australia or in Israel. Some Jews continue to feel that "'it' could happen again, even in New Zealand".

Israel/Palestine in world religions: whose Promised Land?

Troen, S. Ilan
"The struggle over Israel/Palestine is not just another contest by competing nationalisms or an instance of geopolitical competition. It is also about control of sacred territory that involves local Jews, Muslims, and Christians as well as worldwide faith communities, each with their own interests and stake in what transpires. This balanced introduction to a complex subject presents the multiple positions within the great monotheistic traditions. It demonstrates that the secular discourses in the public square concerning ownership privileges, historical precedence, political rights, and justice that have allegedly replaced religious claims actually coexist with, and often complement, the theological. It explores the century-long tangle of secular and theological debates about Israel's legitimacy. Whether readers support a Jewish state or are resolutely opposed, the serious and substantial scholarship of this well-reasoned and innovative book will contribute to a nuanced and better-informed understanding of this persistent issue that has entered its second century on the international agenda."--

The Jews in Victoria, 1835-1985

Rubinstein, Hilary L.
Describes the Jewish community in Victoria, Australia. The stereotype of the Jew as moneylender or old clothes peddler pursued him from Britain to Australia, and to it was added the role of bookmaker as a result of local success in this field. Antisemitic attacks in the local newspaper, the "Melbourne Punch, " were common after 1856. Relates how these attacks multiplied following the pogroms in Russia in the late 19th century, when the press aroused fears of an invasion of bloodsucking Russian Jewish paupers. Gives examples of antisemitic caricatures.

Intertwined worlds: medieval Islam and Bible criticism

Lazarus-Yafeh, Hava
Contrary to the Christians, the Muslims did not consider the Bible as a holy text, therefore their polemics against the Jews took the form of Bible criticism. The main arguments used by Muslim thinkers against Judaism was that the Jews falsified God's word, or failed to transmit it properly, or misinterpreted the Bible, or that the Bible had been abrogated by God. The most prominent Muslim writers who developed these themes in the medieval period were Ibn Hazm and the Jewish apostate Samau'al al-Maghribi in the West of the Arab world, and Ibn Qayyim al-Djawziyya in the East. The first two considered, in particular, that it was Ezra ('Uzayr) who deliberately distorted the text of the Bible. Contends that the Muslim critics of the Bible based their arguments greatly on pre-Islamic sources (such as pagan, gnostic, Christian, and anti-Christian writings), and that they, in turn, were the source of early modern European Bible criticism.
