My family: the memoir

Baddiel, David
On the surface, David Baddiel's childhood was fairly standard: a lower-middle-class Jewish family living in an ordinary house in Dollis Hill, north-west London. But David came to realise that his mother was in fact not ordinary at all. Having escaped extermination by fleeing Nazi Germany as a child, she was desperate to make her life count, which took the form of a passionate, decades-long affair with a golfing memorabilia salesman. Meanwhile, as Baddiel investigates his family's past, his father's memories are fading; dementia is making him moodier and more disinhibited, with an even greater penchant for obscenity. As with his mother's affair, there is both comedy and poignancy to be found: laughter is a constant presence, capable of transforming the darkest of experiences into something redemptive.

Profits of war: inside the secret U.S.-Israeli arms network

Ben-Menashe, Ari
In this seminal work originally published in 1992, an insider account from the man who paid off the Iranians for the American hostages Ari Ben-Menashe spent more than a decade in the innermost circles of Israeli intelligence. He was privy to the secret negotiations with the Iranians to delay the release of the American hostages until after the election of Ronald Reagan, he enlisted Robert Gates in the transfer of the $52 million payoff to Iran, and was Robert Maxwell's handler. Ben-Menashe brokered secret Israeli arms sales on four continents and briefed George Bush on the vast arms network. He saw Israel's own nuclear arsenal develop, and watched his masters sponsor monstrous terrorist acts in the name of a higher good. Then, as he questioned the immorality around him, he was cut off and set up. This is the full story of the man who oversaw the accumulation of hundreds of millions of dollars in CIA and Israeli intelligence slush funds.

The book discusses the relationship between the price of corn and the profits of stock, focusing on the impact of a low price of corn on the economy. He also discusses the potential negative effects of a low price of corn, such as the impact on farmers and the potential for social unrest. The book is considered a classic work in the field of economics and is still widely studied and referenced today. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Bion and Being: Passion and the Creative Mind

Reiner, Annie
With his concept of "O," Wilfred Bion provided a new psychoanalytic space in which to explore the mind. Dr Annie Reiner's new book, Bion and Being: Passion and the Creative Mind, examines the similarities between this psychoanalytic space and the artist's creative sensibility, as well as mystical and religious states. This most mysterious and revolutionary of Bion's analytic ideas reflects what is essentially a state of being, an experience of mental integrity and union between emotional and rational functions of the mind which is the basis of thinking and creativity. In an effort to provide emotional understanding to Bion's theoretical ideas, Dr Reiner uses examples of artists, poets, writers, theologians, and philosophers, including Rilke, Cummings, Shakespeare, Beckett, and Nietzsche, to illustrate these psychoanalytic concepts. She also presents detailed clinical examples of patient's dreams to explore the obstacles to these states of being, as well as how to work clinically to develop access to these creative states.

Please Give The Shooting Script

Nicole Holofcener
Written and directed by Nicole Holofcener ( Friends with Money , Walking and Talking , Lovely & Amazing ), this poignant comedy/drama set in New York City stars Catherine Keener, Amanda Peet, Oliver Platt, Rebecca Hall, Sarah Steele, and Ann Guilbert. Kate (Catherine Keener) has a lot on her mind. There’s the ethics problem of buying furniture on the cheap at estate sales and marking it up at her trendy Manhattan store (and how much mark-up can she get away with?). There’s the materialism problem of not wanting her teenage daughter (Sarah Steele) to want the expensive things that Kate wants. There’s the marriage problem of sharing a partner-ship in parenting, business, and life with her husband Alex (Oliver Platt) but sensing doubt nibbling at the foundations. And there’s Kate’s free-floating 21st-century malaise—the problem of how to live well and be a good person when poverty, homelessness, and sadness are always right outside the door. In addition to the original script, this Newmarket Shooting Scriptbook features an introduction by Holofcener, along with a Q&A, 14 photographs, and full cast and crew credits.

Chicks ahoy!

Esther Friesner
The Popular Chicks in Chainmail Series Set New Standards (and Sales Figures) for Humorous Fantasy. Here’re the First Three books in One Specially-Priced Omni-Trade Volume. Here they come, and they’re out for blood. For too long, they say, have hot blooded babes in brass bras and chain link bikinis been held up to scorn as the embodiment of male fantasy wish-fulfillment and non-fictionality. You think their swords won’t cut, their clubs won’t crush? You think they look cute ? It’s time to take sword-swinging amazons more seriously. Well, maybe not too seriously. After all, the popular Chicks in Chainmail series wasn’t known for stark drama and solemn think-pieces. In fact, they made a lot of people laugh. And now the first three books in the series are combined in one attractively-priced Omni-Trade Paperback volume. · Chicks in Chainmail (The look at the lighter side of amazons that started it all.) · Did You Say Chicks ? ( Smile when you say that, you wimpy noncombatant!) · Chicks ‘n Chained Males (Those men just can’t take care of themselves, so send in the amazons!) It’s all right to have a laugh or two. The swordswomen like a good laugh as much as the next amazon. Just don’t let them get the idea that you’re laughing at them, instead of with them—if you know what’s good for you . . . Stories of fierce female fighters by Harry Turtledove, Roger Zelazny, Elizabeth Moon, Jan and S.M. Stirling, K. D. Wentworth, Lawrence Watt-Evans and more—including Esther Friesner herself.

Memories of a Turkish Statesman 1913-1919

Djemal Pasha
This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1917 edition. Excerpt: ... (6) Columns for Discount on Purchases and Discount on Notes on the same side of the Cash Book; (c) Columns for Discount on Sales and Cash Sales on the debit side of the Cash Book; (d) Departmental columns in the Sales Book and in the Purchase Book. Controlling Accounts.--The addition of special columns in books of original entry makes possible the keeping of Controlling Accounts. The most common examples of such accounts are Accounts Receivable account and Accounts Payable account. These summary accounts, respectively, displace individual customers' and creditors' accounts in the Ledger. The customers' accounts are then segregated in another book called the Sales Ledger or Customers' Ledger, while the creditors' accounts are kept in the Purchase or Creditors' Ledger. The original Ledger, now much reduced in size, is called the General Ledger. The Trial Balance now refers to the accounts in the General Ledger. It is evident that the task of taking a Trial Balance is greatly simplified because so many fewer accounts are involved. A Schedule of Accounts Receivable is then prepared, consisting of the balances found in the Sales Ledger, and its total must agree with the balance of the Accounts Receivable account shown in the Trial Balance. A similar Schedule of Accounts Payable, made up of all the balances in the Purchase Ledger, is prepared, and it must agree with the balance of the Accounts Payable account of the General Ledger." The Balance Sheet.--In the more elementary part of the text, the student learned how to prepare a Statement of Assets and Liabilities for the purpose of disclosing the net capital of an enterprise. In the present chapter he was shown how to prepare a similar statement, the Balance Sheet. For all practical...

Pow! Right in the eye! thirty years behind the scenes of modern French painting

Weill, Berthe
"This is the colorful memoir of the brilliant, eccentric Parisian art dealer Berthe Weill (1865-1951), who championed many of the emerging masters of modern art in the first part of the twentieth century. In this, she was radical and pioneering. She made the first sales in Paris for Picasso and Matisse, and she gave Modigliani the only solo show in his lifetime. Weill also promoted the work of women artists, and her salty memoir (originally published in 1933) details her struggles against sexism and anti-Semitism in the Parisian art world. This text has long been mined by historians for details about the Paris art scene at the turn of the twentieth century, but beyond that, Weill is little known because she was too poor to publish lavish catalogues or invest enormous sums in grooming artists and purchasing their work-which is how most art dealers operated. At the same time, she appears over and over in numerous artist biographies depicted as a colorful figure with an uncanny nose for sniffing out talent"--
