The Jewish Idea and Its Enemies Personalities, Issues, Events

Edward Alexander
This volume deals with the modern fate of the traditional conception of Jews as a covenanted people chosen to receive the Law, whose ultimate purpose is contributing to the universal salvation of mankind. The author shows how, under the influence of liberalism, rationalism, relativism, and other Enlightenment ideologies, this idea was distorted, denied, inverted, yet never entirely obliterated. In his discussions of modern Jewish thinkers and writers and the ideological and political struggles of Zionism and the state of Israel against enemies from without and from within, Alexander shows that the ancient idea of covenant is still alive today, if only in the assumption that Jewish life can lead somewhere so long as Jews remember that it began somewhere. Ranging from literary criticism and the history of ideas to journalism and politics, the book is unified by a point of view unabashedly espousing the Jewish idea and challenging its enemies.

De pratica seu arte tripudii

Guglielmo Ebreo da Pesaro
Fifteenth-century Italy produced the earliest known treatises on the dance. Guglielmo Ebreo, an eminent Jewish dancing master, dedicated his `On the Practice or Art of Dancing' to the future Sforza duke of Milan in the determination to give dance the status enjoyed by music and other arts andsciences. He included not only choreographies (subsequently likened to the artistic achievements of Machaut, Leonardo, Dante, and Petrarch), but a Defence of the Dance, a Socratic dialogue, and theoretical precepts - still valid today - which clearly reflect the contemporary humanistic aesthetic andideals. Challenging exercises (such as dancing counter to the time of the music!) and advice to young ladies at balls are also described. Barbara Sparti has provided a heretofore unavailable (rare) source book for students, amateurs, and scholars: a critical edition in Italian and a facing English translation; dance tunes in facsimile and in annotated transcriptions based on the choreographies. Recent specialized studies and archivaldiscoveries have greatly enriched the introductory chapters on De pratica's history, the interpretation of its music, Guglielmo's life, and dancing in fifteenth-century Italy. An Appendix containing significant theoretical, musical, and choreographic additions from a later copy also has anAutobiography describing princely festivities, replete with names of participants, locations, and expenditures, of particular import to historians and those interested in court life in the Italian Renaissance. A Bibliography, Biographical Notes on Guglielmo's patrons, Illustrations depicting scenesof dancing, as well as a Glossary of dance, music, and humanistic terms, complete the critical apparatus.

Russia's first modern Jews: the Jews of Shklov

Fishman, David E.
Long before there were Jewish communities in the land of the tsars, Jews inhabited a region which they called medinat rusiya, the land of Russia. Prior to its annexation by Russia, the land of Russia was not a center of rabbinic culture. But in 1772, with its annexation by Tsarist Russia, this remote region was severed from the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth; its 65,000 Jews were thus cut off from the heartland of Jewish life in Eastern Europe. Forced into independence, these Jews set about forging a community with its own religious leadership and institutions. The three great intellectual currents in East European Jewry--Hasidism, Rabbinic Mitnagdism, and Haskalah--all converged on Eastern Belorussia, where they clashed and competed. In the course of a generation, the community of Shklov—the most prominent of the towns in the area—witnessed an explosion of intellectual and cultural activity. Focusing on the social and intellectual odysseys of merchants, maskilim, and rabbis, and their varied attempts to combine Judaism and European culture, David Fishman here chronicles the remarkable story of these first modern Jews of Russia.

Hellenistic Civilization and the Jews

Victor Tcherikover
The encounter between Jews and Greeks marked one of the most revolutionary meetings in the ancient world, for in that encounter politics, economics, culture, and religion changed dramatically. Victor Tcherikover, who devoted his entire scholarly life to the study of the Hellenistic period, offers here a benchmark assessment of that encounter. In this reprinted edition of his most famous work, including a new preface by University of Chicago Professor John J. Collins, Tcherikover uniquely combines "analyses of two of the most intriguing episodes of Jewish history in antiquity: the events that led to the Maccabean rebellion and the struggle for rights in Alexandria in the first century CE" (from the preface).

The First Tithe

Israel Eldad
Israel Eldad was the spirit of the Lehi Underground.... Eldad's ideological writings laid the foundation stones of the movement for national freedom. - Former Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Shamir The First Tithe takes you where no reader of thrillers, lover of history or analyst of Mideast politics and terrorism has yet gone into the minds of the Zionist revolutionaries, from the secret meetings of the commanders of the Jewish underground planning to expel the British from the Land of Israel in the 1940s, to prison cells where freedom fighters plan to turn their trials into theater and to escape. The First Tithe is the memoir of one of the leaders of the fiercest Jewish underground army in 2,000 years. It is the story of bank robberies, bombings and the assassination of a British cabinet minister. Israel Eldad reveals the history and revolutionary theories behind the blood and fire that created modern Israel and the national spirit that maintains it. No lover of suspense, friend of Israel or person who seeks to understand the roots of terror can do without The First Tithe.
