Secret city: the hidden Jews of Warsaw, 1940-1945

Paulsson, Gunnar S.
Ca. 28,000 Jews went into hiding in Warsaw during the Nazi occupation - some refused to move into the ghetto in 1940, while others fled from the ghetto at various stages or came to Warsaw from other towns. Ca. 70,000-90,000 Poles were involved in their rescue. In this way, a secret city which consisted of hidden Jews, their helpers, and those who preyed on them on the "Aryan side" (blackmailers, "blue police", etc.) came into being. Describes escapes of Jews from the ghetto, the network of rescue and accommodation on the "Aryan side", and the problems and dangers which the fugitives encountered. Jewish-Polish relationships on the "Aryan side" were complex and multifaceted, and the line between Polish helpers and enemies was not always clear. The Warsaw uprising of 1944 marked the end of the "secret city". 5,400 Jews perished in the uprising and its aftermath, some of them killed by the insurgents - fighters of the Armia Krajowa. Contends that flight and life in hiding presented the best chances for survival for the Jews; despite all odds, more than 60% of the Jewish fugitives in Warsaw survived the war.

Fascist in the family: the tragedy of John Beckett M.P.

Beckett, Francis
John Beckett was a rising political star. Elected as Labour's youngest M.P. in 1924, he was constantly in the news and tipped for greatness. But ten years later he was propaganda chief for Mosley's fascists, and one of Britain's three best known anti-Semites. Yet his mother, whom he loved, was a Jew. Her ancestors were Solomons, Isaacs and Jacobsons, originally from Prussia. He successfully hid his Jewish ancestry all his life - he said his mother's family were "fisher folk from the east coast." His son, the author of this book, acclaimed political biographer and journalist Francis Beckett, did not discover the truth until John Beckett had been dead for years. He left Mosley and founded the National Socialist League with William Joyce, later Lord Haw Haw, and spent the war years in prison, considered a danger to the war effort. For the rest of his life, and all of Francis Beckett's childhood, John Beckett and his family were closely watched by the security services. Their devious machinations, traced in records only recently released, damaged chiefly his young family. This is a fascinating and brutally honest account of a troubled man in turbulent times.

Peiresc's Orient: antiquarianism as cultural history in the seventeenth century

Miller, Peter N.
The ten essays published in this volume were written over the space of a decade, but they were conceived from the start as a coherent whole, presenting Peiresc's study of discrete languages and literatures of the Near East and North Africa. For Peiresc the student of the Classical past, this described the eastern and southern space in which the Greeks and Romans lived and strove. For Peiresc the Christian, this was the world of the Bible that impacted upon the Greeks and Romans. And for Peiresc of the Mediterranean (for he was born in Aix, spent much time in Marseille, and lived outside of the region for only 6 of his 57 years), this was the territory that his friends and colleagues sailed to, lived in and, usually, came back from. The convergence of these axes in the life of one man, and a man of singular intellectual power and charm whose vast personal paper arsenal had survived, makes this such a compelling project. The essays are arranged in a roughly chronological order. They follow the course of Peiresc's own projects from his early encounter with the ancient Near East in Greek and Roman literature, through his engagement with Arabic to his deepening kowledge of rabbinic texts to the wider world of the new oriental studies of the seventeenth century which he helped create: Samaritan, Coptic and Ethiopic.

Reading the Bible in the pre-modern world: interpretation, performance and image

Chanita Goodblatt,Howard Theodore Kreisel
This collection of essays explores the divergent, as well as complementary trends, in reading the Hebrew Bible in the pre-modern world. It does so by focusing on a variety of Jewish and Christian exegetical, literary and visual texts. The first part of this volume focuses on aspects of interpretation, performance and image in Christian readings of the Hebrew Bible, as evident in translations of the Bible, sermons, plays, treatises and paintings. The second part focuses on the Jewish understanding of Scripture in the Middle Ages, as evident in the running commentary on the books of the Pentateuch as well as in illuminated manuscripts and mystical texts. Together, they provide a forum of interdisciplinary scholarship that demonstrates the Bible’s multivalent presence.--

The king at the edge of the world: novel

Phillips, Arthur
Queen Elizabeth’s spymasters recruit an unlikely agent—the only Muslim in England—for an impossible mission in a mesmerizing novel from “one of the best writers in America” ( The Washington Post ) “Evokes flashes of Hilary Mantel, John le Carré and Graham Greene, but the wry, tricky plot that drives it is pure Arthur Phillips.”— The Wall Street Journal NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY THE NEW YORK TIMES BOOK REVIEW AND THE WASHINGTON POST The year is 1601. Queen Elizabeth I is dying, childless. Her nervous kingdom has no heir. It is a capital crime even to think that Elizabeth will ever die. Potential successors secretly maneuver to be in position when the inevitable occurs. The leading candidate is King James VI of Scotland, but there is a problem. The queen’s spymasters—hardened veterans of a long war on terror and religious extremism—fear that James is not what he appears. He has every reason to claim to be a Protestant, but if he secretly shares his family’s Catholicism, then forty years of religious war will have been for nothing, and a bloodbath will ensue. With time running out, London confronts a seemingly impossible question: What does James truly believe? It falls to Geoffrey Belloc, a secret warrior from the hottest days of England’s religious battles, to devise a test to discover the true nature of King James’s soul. Belloc enlists Mahmoud Ezzedine, a Muslim physician left behind by the last diplomatic visit from the Ottoman Empire, as his undercover agent. The perfect man for the job, Ezzedine is the ultimate outsider, stranded on this cold, wet, and primitive island. He will do almost anything to return home to his wife and son. Arthur Phillips returns with a unique and thrilling novel that will leave readers questioning the nature of truth at every turn.

Early Medieval Art in the British Museum

Ernst Kitzinger
The central theme of this book is the unity of European artistic development from the breakup of the ancient world to the age of the great cathedrals. Illustrated with over 48 plates, reproducing photographs from the collection of early medieval art in the British Museum, it contains chapters on late antique, Early Christian, Carolingian, Byzantine, Ottonian, medieval Spanish and Italian, tenth, eleventh, and twelfth century art. According to the author, "...during the early Middle Ages, which are still often regarded merely as a hiatus, the entire foundations of European art were were changed and a new and great ideal found full expression..." In his critical survey, Mr. Kitzinger, a Kingsley Porter University Professor at Harvard University, Busch-Reisinger Musueum, and formerly associated with the British Museum, described the way in which the propagandist art of the late Roman emperors and the symbolic language used in early Christian monuments led to the vivid narrative style of early Byzantine and Carolingian art, and eventually to the ecstatic expressionism of the Ottonian age.

Storytelling and Spirituality in Judaism

Yitzhak Buxbaum
"The purpose of this book is to elevate stories and storytelling in people's esteem, so they will understand their holiness and appreciate them at their full worth. There are those who enjoy stories and storytelling but in the back of their minds think, 'After all, they're only stories.' But in the same way that the Western Wall of the Temple is not just a wall, a mere pile of stones, neither are the stories of the Torah or of the tzaddikim 'just stories.' Holy stories are the light of the world. When we understand that, when both tellers and listeners know they are engaged in sacred activity, we will hold stories and storytelling more dear. The teller will tell with the tongue of faith, the listeners will hear with ears of faith, and the circle of holiness will be closed." -from the Introduction

The New Anti-Semitism

Chesler, Phyllis
"Anyone who wants to understand the connection between anti-Semitism, Islamic terrorism, the role of propaganda and appeasement must read this book." -Natan Sharansky, author, The Case for Democracy: The Power of Freedom to Overcome Tyranny and Terror "I admire the courage of this vision and the power of the writing." -Rabbi Lord Dr. Jonathan Sacks "Passionate and beautifully written.... This book will make you weep. It will also make you angry and frightened." -Alan Dershowitz, Harvard Law School; author, The Case for Israel "Absolutely amazing...An indispensable guide to the apocalyptic sandstorms our world now faces." -Erica Jong, poet and novelist, Fear of Flying A dangerous worldwide coalition of Islamic terrorists, well-intentioned but misinformed students, right-wing fascists, left-wing ideologues, academics, feminists, European politicians, journalists, and international human rights organizations have joined together to again scapegoat the Jews and the Jewish state for crimes they did not commit and for whatever ails the world. In this intensely passionate and compelling book, the best-selling and prize-winning Jewish feminist author Dr. Phyllis Chesler demonstrates how old-fashioned anti-Semitism - now often seen in the form of anti-Zionism - has become fashionable and even politically correct, and how this plague threatens the Jews of the world, Israel, America, and Western civilization.
