Mythopoetic Musings 2007-2018
Mythopoetic Musings is a gathering of essays and reworked lectures written by Christine Downing during the years since the 2006 publication of her earlier collection Gleanings. Many represent returns to the themes and images, the stories and writers, that have played a central role in her writing and teaching since she began her scholarly career. Amplifications not retractions. As always, they intertwine the academic and the personal and communicate her conviction that a genuinely depth psychological engagement with any theme will inevitably lead us to ourselves. Our stories. As she says, "I have been a teacher and a writer, but really what I have been is a story-teller. I think I can safely tell myself, I'll never stop being one."

Causal learning: psychology, philosophy, and computation
Understanding causal structure is a central task of human cognition. Causal learning underpins the development of our concepts and categories, our intuitive theories, and our capacities for planning, imagination and inference. During the last few years, there has been an interdisciplinary revolution in our understanding of learning and reasoning: Researchers in philosophy, psychology, and computation have discovered new mechanisms for learning the causal structure of the world. This new work provides a rigorous, formal basis for theory theories of concepts and cognitive development, and moreover, the causal learning mechanisms it has uncovered go dramatically beyond the traditional mechanisms of both nativist theories, such as modularity theories, and empiricist ones, such as association or connectionism.

A psychology of gesture
Originally published in 1945, this title was a follow-up to the author's previous book The Human Hand . This time she looks at the psychology of gesture and its relation to personality. The special place that a psychology of gesture merits is obvious. It permits a direct knowledge of personality without any effort or misleading co-operation on the part of the subject, since it can be applied without his being aware of the fact. The book 'is constructed on a system of clinical studies and medico-psychological interpretations.' The author felt that this title must be regarded as a complementary study to her main studies.

The Jews of Hungary: history, culture, psychology
A comprehensive history of the Jews in Hungary from the Roman period up to the present. Describes, inter alia, legal restrictions on the Jews in the 11th-14th centuries; the expulsion of the Jews from Hungary in 1360 under King Lajos I; the blood libel in Nagysombat in 1494; the massacre of Jews in Buda by the Hungarian and Brandenburg armies in 1686, after recapturing the city from the Turks. Ch. 31 (pp. 347-357), "Istoczy and Tiszaeszlar, " deals with the first blood libel case in Hungary in the 19th century. Chs. 36-39 (pp. 442-534) deal with intellectual and political antisemitism in Hungary in the early 20th century (before 1938), including the period of Horthy's White Terror and the numerus clausus in Hungarian universities. Chs. 40-44 (pp. 535-595) deal with the anti-Jewish laws of 1938-39 and the Holocaust in Hungary. Notes that antisemitism did not disappear in Hungary after 1945. Contends that antisemitism in Hungary in the 20th century not only almost destroyed the highly acculturated Jewish community, but also harmed Hungarian culture, to which many Jews contributed.

After the event: the transmission of grievous loss in Germany, China and Taiwan
Two of the most destructive moments of state violence in the twentieth century occurred in Europe between 1933 and 1945 and in China between 1959 and 1961 (the Great Leap famine). This is the first book to bring the two histories together in order to examine their differences and to understand if there are any similar processes of transmission at work. The author expertly ties in the Taiwanese civil war between Nationalists and Communists, which included the White Terror from 1947 to 1987, a less well-known but equally revealing part of twentieth-century history. Personal and family stories are told, often in the individual's own words, and then compared with the public accounts of the same events as found in official histories, commemorations, school textbooks and other forms of public memory. The author presents innovative and constructive criticisms of social memory theories in order to make sense both of what happened and how what happened is transmitted.--From publisher description
