Reminiscences of Staff Officers of Adm. Elmo R. Zumwalt Jr. , USN (Ret. )

Elmo R. Zumwalt
Launched in September 1982 -- one month after the opening interviews conducted for the oral history of Admiral Elmo R. Zumwalt Jr., Naval Institute oral historian Paul Stillwell embarked on a project to augment Zumwalt's memoir with those of some of the officers who had served under him. The highly influential admiral who reshaped the modern Navy and served as the youngest-ever Chief of Naval Operations, Zumwalt put his stamp on his era and was the sort of dynamic leader who inspires a range of opinions -- thus the importance of capturing these multiple points of view. Conceived as an ongoing effort, the first volume contains the accounts of three of those who worked closely with Zumwalt, and whose memories provide a worthwhile addition to Zumwalt's oral history.

WWII Memoirs

Brenda Love
Many of us never explore the effects WWII had on future generations and how all our lives might be different if there had been no war. More than 60 international writers have contributed their family's experiences to this anthology. Their stories include Allied and Axis veterans, POWs, partisans, women aviators, camp survivors, and civilians on the home front. Many of our writers had to overcome a great sadness as they wrote, but despite this felt it was important to document these, the darkest days of our history. The strength, courage, and perseverance in these stories reminds us that the human spirit will not be broken. Experience WWII through these stories of incredible men and women who lived it.

Cafe Scheherazade

Zable, Arnold
In Acland Street, St Kilda, there stands a cafe called Scheherazade. Thus begins Arnold Zable’s haunting meditation on displacement, and the way the effects of war linger in the minds of its survivors. In this deeply moving book we meet Avram and Masha, proprietors of the cafe, and hear the tales that they and their fellow storytellers have to offer: of Yossel stalking the streets of Shanghai and Warsaw, of Laizer imprisoned in the Soviet city of Lvov, and of Zalman marooned in Vilna and Kobe. And we learn how Avram and Masha met and fell in love and came to create their Melbourne cafe together. In this mesmerising book, at once fable and history, fiction becomes a way of remaining faithful to the stories of cities strung across the globe like pearls on a string, to the maps and narratives etched in the minds of old men talking in a cafe by the sea.

World Without War

Bernal, J D
World Without War is a book written by J. D. Bernal, which explores the idea of creating a world without war. The book is a philosophical and political treatise that examines the root causes of war and proposes solutions to prevent it. Bernal argues that war is not a natural or inevitable part of human existence, but rather a product of specific historical and social conditions. He believes that these conditions can be changed, and that it is possible to create a world without war. The book is divided into three parts. The first part explores the causes of war, including economic factors, nationalism, and the arms race. The second part proposes solutions to prevent war, including disarmament, international cooperation, and the creation of a world government. The third part examines the implications of a world without war, including the possibility of a more peaceful and prosperous world, and the challenges of building a new global order. Throughout the book, Bernal draws on a wide range of sources, including history, philosophy, and science. He argues that war is not only destructive but also irrational, and that it is in the interest of all people to work towards a world without war. World Without War is a thought-provoking and inspiring book that challenges readers to think critically about the root causes of war and to imagine a better future for humanity. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world's literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions, that are true to their original work.

The politics of national security

Raskin, Marcus G.
The evolution of the national security state in the United States can be traced from the political, military, and economic dimensions of American power in the postwar world. In Raskin's view, the United States emerged from the Second World War with tremendously increased prestige and material power, and American leadership created a national security apparatus as a planning instrument to ensure national stability, to mute class conflicts, and to secure the domestic economy. This state then became the basis around the world for covert and overt imperialism. The consensus that developed served to maintain stability at home and to guide the modern empire abroad. This development required a state that was orderly and that was predicated on modern bureaucracy, which operated within the values and assumptions of the ruling elites. The national security state system was successful primarily in the economic sphere, with bipartisan foreign-policy decision making aimed at ensuring a stable business climate at home and abroad. Military involvement in Indochina evidenced the decline of American hegemony; the genocidal nature of the arms race and the questions raised by protestors of the sixties signaled the break up of the national security consensus.Raskin concludes the book with an examination of alternative directions, especially regarding the need and the possibilities for renewed public debate of national policy and purpose.

Armageddon in the classroom: an examination of nuclear education

London, Herbert I.
The classroom texts presently in use on the subject of nuclear weapons provide ample evidence that a biased version of peace studies has insinuated itself into the school curriculum at all levels of study, whereby these guides represent a blatant ideological slant in the direction of unilateral disarmament and portray the United States as the culprit in the 'arms race.' This book advocates the restoration of a balanced view to the study of national security.

Abram The Life of an Israeli Patriot

Henry Orenstein
This is a biography of a young man who is not really sure what to do with his life, who gets thrown into the whirlwind of World War II and only then learns about life, about courage, and about honor. A boy, who grows up in poisonous, anti-Sematic surroundings in Poland, he travels to Palestine and unexpectedly finds a purpose in life. then everything changes for Abram with the outbreak of World War II. He joins the British Army as a private and a sequence of incredible events follow- he serves in the suicide comando and is court-martialed for hitting a British Sargeant Major. After the war ends, Abram, now a major in the British Army, organizes the transport of tens of thousands of concentration camp survivors to Palestine. he does this right under the noses of British intelligence, and is later detained for months while being investigated. Finally, the story moves on to the War of Independence in Palestine, where Abram plays a critical part in establishing a secret road to supply the surrounded Jerusalem Jews- saving them from the Arabs. Abram tells of his fight with Prime Minister Ben-Gurion and its consequences. The incredible saga of Abram plays out against the stark reality of World War II and its aftermath. It will no doubt leave an indelible impression on the reader.
