From the Mari Archives An Anthology of Old Babylonian Letters

Jack M. Sasson
For over 40 years, Jack M. Sasson has been studying and commenting on the cuneiform archives from Mari on the Euphrates River, especially those from the age of Hammurabi of Babylon. Among Mari's wealth of documents, some of the most interesting are letters from and to kings, their advisers and functionaries, their wives and daughters, their scribes and messengers, and a variety of military personnel. The letters are revealing and often poignant. Sasson selects more than 700 letters as well as several excerpts from administrative documents, translating them and providing them with illuminating comments. In distilling a lifetime of study and interpretation, Sasson hopes to welcome readers into a fuller appreciation of a remarkable period in Mesopotamian civilization. Sasson's presentation is organized around major institutions in an ancient culture: (1) Kingship, treating accumulation of wealth, control of vassals, dynastic marriages, treaty-obligations, as well as illustrating the hazards and vexation of ruling a large territory; (2) Administration, from palaces that teem with bureaucrats, musicians, and cooks, to the management of provinces and vassal kingdoms; (3) Warfare, military establishment and martial practices; (4) Society, including organs of justice (and shortcuts to it), crime, punishment, and civil transactions; (5) Religion, including notices on diverse pantheons, rituals, priesthood, cultic paraphernalia, vows, ordeals, and channels to the gods (divination, dreams, and prophecy); and (6) Culture, including ethnic distinctions, class structure, and moments in the life cycle (birth, childhood, family life, health matters, death, and commemoration). Sasson's presentation of the material brings to life a world entombed for four millennia, concretizes the realities of ancient life, and gives it a human perspective that is at once instructive and entertaining. The book is accompanied by extensive concordances and indexes (including to biblical passages) that will be useful to those who wish to study the letters more intensively.

Waiting for the dark, waiting for the light

Klíma, Ivan
Ivan Klima was in the United States when Russian tanks entered Prague in 1968 but, against the advice of friends and colleagues, he returned home. He became a dissident, writing books (never officially published) that were invariably inspired by Czechoslovakia's repressive regime. But what happens to a rebel artist when there is nothing left to rebel against? This question indirectly informs Klima's powerful new novel - his most important and far-reaching fiction to date. Waiting for the Dark, Waiting for the Light describes life before, during, and after the Velvet Revolution of 1989. It is the story of Pavel, a middle-aged television cameraman working uneasily within the boundaries set by the regime, who dreams of one day making a film - a searing portrait of his times - that the authorities will never allow. But after the collapse of communism, Pavel finds he is unprepared for this new world of supposedly unlimited freedoms. He never quite gets around to making that searing portrait of his times; his time, his day, is taken up instead with lucrative small jobs - a TV spot, a commercial, a porn film ... Waiting for the Dark, Waiting for the Light is a masterful novel that focuses on the most pressing issue confronting the individual in the former Soviet bloc countries today: how to live one's life when one is truly free. Written with humor and compassion, it is powerful, provocative, and certain to further the reputation of Ivan Klima as a brilliant and original writer of international stature.

The Jewish community in Poland: historical essays

Lewin, Isaac
Ch. 12 (pp. 162-174), "The Jews in Galicia, " surveys the status of the Jews in this Austrian province from 1772 to 1918. Describes restrictive legislation by Maria Theresia, Joseph II, and their successors. Although the Edict of Tolerance was decreed in 1789, serious discrimination against the Jewish population persisted. Deals, as well, with the process of emancipation of Galician Jewry and the abolition of discriminatory taxes in 1849. Ch. 16 (pp. 215-239), "The Relationship of the Polish Government to the Jewish Population between the Two World Wars, " states that although Poland signed the Small Versailles Peace Treaty which granted minority rights, the Treaty was not respected in practice. Surveys the attitudes of consecutive governments to the "Jewish question" and debates in the Sejm. Mentions pogroms in 1918-20 and in the 1930s. Notes worsening of the situation after Pilsudski's death and the growth of the influence of right-wing parties.

Holy dissent: Jewish and Christian mystics in Eastern Europe

Glenn Dynner
The religious communities of early modern Eastern Europe?particularly those with a mystical bent?are typically studied in isolation. Yet the heavy Slavic imprint on Jewish popular mysticism and pervasive Judaizing tendencies among Christian dissenters call into question the presumed binary quality of Jewish-Christian interactions. In Holy Dissent: Jewish and Christian Mystics in Eastern Europe, editor Glenn Dynner presents twelve essays that chart contacts, parallels, and mutual influences between Jewish and Christian mystics. With cutting-edge research on folk healers, messianists, Hasidim, and Christian sectarians, this volume presents instances of rich cultural interchange and bold border transgression. Holy Dissent is divided into two sections: "Jewish Mystics in a Christian World" and "Christianizing Jews, Judaizing Christians." In these essays, readers learn that Jewish and Christian folk healers consulted each other and learned from common sources; that the founder of Hasidism, Rabbi Israel Ba'al Shem Tov, likely drew inspiration from Christian ascetics; that Christian peasants sought and obtained audience with Hasidic masters; that Jewish mystics openly Christianized; and that Christian mystics openly Judaized. In contrast to prevailing models that present Jewish and Christian cultures as either rigidly autonomous or ambiguously hybrid, Holy Dissent charts specific types of religio-cultural exchange and broadens our conception of how cultures interact. The scholarship in this volume is notably fresh and significant and makes an important contribution across disciplines. Jewish and Christian studies scholars as well as historians of Eastern Europe will benefit from the analysis of Holy Dissent.

Michelangelo's design principles, particularly in relation to those of Raphael

Panofsky, Erwin
Abstract: "In June 2012, an early manuscript by renowned art historian Erwin Panofsky was discovered in a vault in a government building in Munich. The manuscript was quickly identified as Panofsky's habilitationsschrift on Michelangelo, a long-missing and legendary document that certified Panofsky to lead university courses, and about which scholars had speculated for decades. The manuscript's origins date back to late spring of 1920 (and was completed when its author was twenty-eight), but in 1933, Panofsky was forced to flee Nazi Germany without being able to go through his office or papers. The manuscript disappeared in the years leading up to World War II and was thought destroyed in the fire-bombing of Hamburg. Following his emigration to the United States in 1934, Panofsky joined the faculty of the newly-formed Institute for Advanced Study, and went on to author a dozen books, including three with Princeton University Press.

Jewish Poland revisited: heritage tourism in unquiet places

Lehrer, Erica T.
Since the end of Communism, Jews from around the world have visited Poland to tour Holocaust-related sites. A few venture further, seeking to learn about their own Polish roots and connect with contemporary Poles. For their part, a growing number of Poles are fascinated by all things Jewish. Erica T. Lehrer explores the intersection of Polish and Jewish memory projects in the historically Jewish neighborhood of Kazimierz in Krakow. Her own journey becomes part of the story as she demonstrates that Jews and Poles use spaces, institutions, interpersonal exchanges, and cultural representations

Miss Granby's secret, or, The bastard of Pinsk

Farjeon, Eleanor
How much did Aunt Addie know? How much did she feel? Aunt Addie better known to the world at large as Adelaide Granby, the fabulously successful author of 49 volumes of gushing, melodramatic Victorian romance. Upon her death in 1912, flowers and cards pour in, including one particularly lavish set "From Stanislaw", whom her independent-minded, suffragette niece Pamela decides was "darling Aunt Addie's Grande Passion." Pamela also inherits a stack of Aunt Addie's secret papers, including youthful diaries and her unintentionally hilarious unpublished first novel, written when she was only 16, entitled The Bastard of Pinsk (a "bastard", 16-year-old Adelaide was sure, being "A very noble Hero of Royal Blood.") As Pamela explores these documents and talks with those who knew her aunt when, seeking the real-life source of her romantic sensibility, the reader is drawn irresistibly into the intrigue. In a novel both sentimental and brutally honest, nostalgic for and horrified by the sentiments of the past, hilarious and poignant, all at once, the brilliant Eleanor Farjeon poses surprisingly powerful questions about what makes a love "real" and how much one really needs to know to experience it... This new edition features a superb introduction by twentieth-century women's historian Elizabeth Crawford. "Naughtiness of a definitely mauve tint." Beatrice Sherman, New York Times

The early Palaeologan renaissance (1261-c. 1360): by Edmund Fryde

Fryde, E. B.
The Byzantine world underwent a remarkable recovery of intellectual energy in the period following the recovery of Constantinople in 1261. The reaction of the emperors and their entourage of well-educated high officials to their political disasters was a deliberate revival of the glories of ancient Greek culture. The main subject of this book is the preservation and dissemination by this learned elite of such ancient literature, philosophy and science as still survived then, the development of editorial techniques which resulted in more complete and less corrupt texts, and their improvement buy the addition of commentaries and other innovations.

Authority and asceticism from Augustine to Gregory the Great

Leyser, Conrad
Conrad Leyser examines the formation of the Christian ascetic tradition in the western Roman Empire during the period of the barbarian invasions, c.400-600. In an aggressively competitive political context, one of the most articulate claims to power was made, paradoxically, by men who had renounced 'the world', committing themselves to a life of spiritual discipline in the hope of gaining entry to an otherworldly kingdom. Often dismissed as mere fanaticism or open hypocrisy, the language of ascetic authority, Conrad Leyser shows, was both carefully honed and well understood in the late Roman and early medieval Mediterranean. Dr Leyser charts the development of this new moral rhetoric by abbots, teachers, and bishops from the time of Augustine of Hippo to that of St Benedict and Gregory the Great.
