The Dark Night of the Soul: Unabridged & Illustrated Book by St. John of the Cross

of the Cross, St. John
The Dark Night of the Soul by St. John of the Cross is one of the most profound and enduring spiritual books ever written, a timeless classic of Christian mysticism, inner transformation, and the journey toward divine union. Written between 1577 and 1579 by the Spanish Carmelite mystic, this remarkable work explores the soul’s passage through spiritual darkness, purification, and ultimate illumination. This powerful book presents the “dark night” not as despair, but as a necessary stage of spiritual growth, in which the soul is stripped of attachments, illusions, and worldly desires in order to be united with God. Through poetic language and deep theological insight, St. John of the Cross reveals the hidden process of spiritual awakening, describing both the suffering and the profound grace that accompany the soul’s transformation. Blending mystical poetry with spiritual commentary, The Dark Night of the Soul remains an essential book for readers seeking deeper understanding of faith, contemplation, and the interior life. Its teachings have influenced centuries of Christian thought, as well as modern discussions of spiritual crisis, personal growth, and the search for meaning. Perfect for readers of religious classics, spiritual philosophy, Christian mysticism, and contemplative literature, this timeless book continues to guide those navigating periods of inner struggle, doubt, and renewal. Whether approached as a devotional text or a philosophical work, The Dark Night of the Soul offers profound insight into the path toward spiritual clarity and union. This English edition, translated by David Lewis (1864), is now available in Kindle, Paperback, and Hardcover.

Basic Judaism (Harbrace Modern Classics)

Steinberg, Milton
Concise and elegant, this is a book about the Jewish religion - not about the Jewish culture or Zionism, but about those beliefs, ideals, and practices that make up the historic Jewish faith. Including both the modernist and the traditionalist view in his exploration, Rabbi Steinberg discusses the Torah, what Judaism says about God and the relationship, and what exists in the Kingdom of God. He also talks about the laws that define Judaism, the practices and rituals that sustain it, and the synagogue and the rabbinate that support it. For all students of Judaism - be they practicing Jews, uncommitted Jews, or curious non-Jews - Rabbi Steinberg offers a brilliant chance to understand what the Jewish faith is, why it has elicited such intense devotion, and why it remains such a mighty force in the lives of its believers and, beyond them, the world.

The Kuzari: Torah classics in english edition of sefer Kuzari.

Halevi, Judah
The Kuzari, full title Book of Refutation and Proof on Behalf of the Despised Religion, also known as the Book of the Khazar (Hebrew: ספר הכוזרי: Sefer ha-Kuzari), is one of the most famous works of the medieval Spanish Jewish philosopher and poet Judah Halevi, completed in the Hebrew year 4900 (1139-40CE). Originally written in Arabic, prompted by Halevi's contact with a Spanish Karaite, it was then translated by numerous scholars, including Judah ben Saul ibn Tibbon, into Hebrew and other languages, and is regarded as one of the most important apologetic works of Jewish philosophy.[2] Divided into five parts (ma'amarim – articles), it takes the form of a dialogue between a rabbi and the king of the Khazars, who has invited the former to instruct him in the tenets of Judaism in comparison with those of the other two Abrahamic religions: Christianity and Islam.

Der Judenstaat: Theodor Herzl

Herzl, Theodor
This is the original German edition of Der Judenstaat by Theodor Herzl, republished by Comprehendible Classics. For our new modern English translation, please visit our Author Page. "The Jewish State" (“Der Judenstaat”) by Theodor Herzl is considered one of the most important texts of modern Zionism. Written in 1896, this work significantly influenced the Zionist movement and the establishment of the modern State of Israel. Herzl, a Jewish journalist and political thinker from Austria, argued that the best way to avoid the widespread and rampant antisemitism was to create an independent Jewish state. In The Jewish State, Herzl paints a vivid picture of a homeland for the Jewish people, and shares intricate details about the foundations of this envisioned nation. He also explores the topic of identity and the relentless pursuit of a place to belong. Herzl's vision is a testament to the extraordinary capacity of an individual's ideas to mold the course of history. In fact, he's often called the father of modern political Zionism, and is officially referred to as "the spiritual father of the Jewish State" in the Israeli Declaration of Independence. The Hidden Life: Thoughts on Communion with God

Saphir, Adolph
Adolph Saphir's classic meditation on chapter four, verse eight of the Book of James is treasured for its poignant spiritual assessment of the New Testament. "Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you." is the message at the heart of The Hidden Life. For the author, these words summarize most perfectly the exactness of God's message through the New Testament. With this as his basis, Adolph Saphir proceeds to discuss how to live with the Holy Trinity in mind. Yet his contemplations are rich in their variety; he visits such topics as Eastern mysticism found in religions of India and Islam, the discussions between God and Biblical figures such as Nicodemus, and the message brought by Christ to humankind. The meditations herein are supported by references to chapters of the New Testament, together with a variety of quotations from spiritual authors of antiquity and early modern times. Though his inquiry is winding with touches of eclecticism, Saphir never loses sight of the objective: growing closer to the spiritual essence of the Lord and Jesus Christ. The Saphir family converted from Judaism to Christianity when Adolph was a child. Intellectually apt, Adolph gained a Master's degree from Glasgow University, and went on to serve as a minister and missionary of some renown in the 19th century. Glasgow University made him an honorary Doctor of Divinity in 1878.
