Maps to Anywhere
The essays in Maps to Anywhere plot terrain that is at once familiar yet subtly strange. Writing on subjects ranging from his family to the origin of the barbershop pole, Bernard Cooper digs into the glimmering surface of the southern California landscape, observing the collision of the American Dream with the realities of everyday life. From the fragments, he discovers landmarks by which he attempts to make sense of contemporary America.

According to front end paper "this book follows the author's previous book which uncovered an entirely new field of American folklore- the songs and stories of the anthracite miners which have never been collected and printed before. THIS book adds an even richer record to national literature in this volume devoted to the bituminous miners. These soft coal mines are located in many different parts of the country and the background is more diversified and the miners of a wider racial variety. The book is based on three years of research which had the author recording songs directly from the miners, checking old legends and verifying historical facts. The book is divided into 3 life in a coal camp; in the mines; and the story of the miner's long fight for improved working conditions. Within each section are included the songs and stories pertinent to it."
