Marilyn: The Lost Photographs, the Last Interview

Meryman, Richard,Monroe, Marilyn
Marilyn Monroe’s final formal photo session and last interview have never been released in their entirety—until now. Completed in July 1962, just a month before her passing, the interview conducted by Richard Meryman was Marilyn at her most open and honest, and the photos by Allan Grant were the only ones ever taken in her home. Now, for the first time, you can read Marilyn in her own words and see her as the world has never seen her before. "A beautifully understated look at an American icon, as she probably wished she could have been seen.” --Library Journal In July 1962, Marilyn Monroe was at a crossroads. At thirty-six years old and embroiled in legal battles with the studio of her current picture, Something’s Gotta Give, she was struggling with fame, age, and a studio system in which she no longer fit. When she sat down to give Richard Meryman an interview, she had a lot to say. Originally intended to be an interview about fame, over the course of four hours Marilyn talked about her entire life. Only a small portion of the interview was published in LIFE Magazine. When she died, just two days after the article was published, Meryman put the full transcript and the original tapes in his files, never to see the light of day. Documenting this landmark interview was iconic photojournalist Allan Grant. His images of Marilyn would be her last formal photo shoot—in her home, in casual clothes, being the glorious, free spirit she was. Grant captured every emotion of the interview in these exquisite images, only eight of which were published alongside the LIFE interview excerpt. Most of the remainder of the images were stored in Allan’s safe, waiting to be rediscovered. Marilyn: The Lost Photographs • The Last Interview is Marilyn Monroe in her own words—words that haven’t been published, until now. In this recently restored and complete transcript, Marilyn candidly talks about her childhood and life, fame, the studio system, her approach to work, celebrity, being a sex symbol, and more. At times joyous, silly, serious, philosophical and pensive, it is a Marilyn that the world has never experienced. Accompanying the interview are more than 400 of Grant’s extraordinary images, most never published until now. This beautifully produced book offers readers a glimpse into Marilyn’s mindset during her final month as she began to assert control of her career and address her relationship with celebrity. Deepening the understanding of Marilyn’s talents, humanity, and true legacy, and the appreciation of her true beauty, this is a fitting tribute to one of the most iconic figures in history.

For all the world to see: visual culture and the struggle for civil rights

Berger, Maurice
In 1955, shortly after Emmett Till was murdered by white supremacists in Mississippi, his grieving mother distributed to the press a gruesome photograph of his mutilated corpse. Asked why she would do this, she explained that by witnessing with their own eyes the brutality of segregation and racism, Americans would be more likely to support the cause of racial justice. "Let the world see what I've seen," was her reply. The publication of the photograph inspired a generation of activists to join the civil rights movement. Despite this extraordinary episode, the story of visual culture's role in the modern civil rights movement is rarely included in its history. This is the first comprehensive examination of the ways images mattered in the struggle, and it investigates a broad range of media including photography, television, film, magazines, newspapers, and advertising. These images were ever present and diverse: the startling footage of southern white aggression and black suffering that appeared night after night on television news programs; the photographs of black achievers and martyrs in Negro periodicals; the humble snapshot, no less powerful in its ability to edify and motivate. In each case, the war against racism was waged through pictures, millions of points of light, millions of potent weapons that forever changed a nation. This book allows us to see and understand the crucial role that visual culture played in forever changing a nation.

Michael Ackermann and Jem Cohen: Visitors

Michael/Jem Ackermann/Cohen
What did it mean to photographer Michael Ackerman and filmmaker Jem Cohen to ring the bell beside the singular green door of Robert Frank and June Leaf's timeworn home on New York's Bleecker Street? Or for Cohen to traverse dirt roads to their equally weathered house high above the ocean in Nova Scotia? First as newly developing artists and then across decades, it meant taking a chance--would it be an intensely beautiful encounter or a sad dismissal, a life-changing inspiration or a sorely missed moment? Visitors reflects on Cohen and Ackerman's times with Frank and Leaf, the artists who mean most to them in the world, via a scrapbook of their photos and filmstrips, alongside letters, postcards, and drawings by Robert and June. The book is an intimate and revelatory interchange marked by both lightness and weight. Cohen describes "warrens of tumbling rooms and staircases, museums of memories, crossed paths, dust, and souvenirs," the homes of the "living contradictions" Leaf and Frank: June, engrossed in her studio work and less encumbered than her husband by "all the renown and history going around, some of it heartbreaking"; and Robert, "the world's most famous and famously difficult photographer, as well as reclusive, even if that wasn't exactly true." Ackerman and Cohen's images of the two are candid, empathetic, and aesthetically daring: June and Robert thinking, laughing, waiting, working, watching the world go by. Including a Blu-ray film of a yet unreleased documentary film about the couple by Cohen, Visitors is a tribute to two friends and a gift for all of us who never had the chance (or nerve) to ring the bell by that green door.

Day in the Life of Israel

David Cohen
More than 60 photographers from more than a dozen countries were commissioned to shoot photos during one 24-hour period in May 1994. In short, A Day in the Life of Israel is like Israel itself, densely layered, wildly diverse, alternately brash and philosophical, pragmatic and insane - but, in the end, always fascinating and photogenic beyond belief. The 200 color and black and white images in this book were selected from nearly 100,000 shot on May 5, 1994. None is 24 hours older or younger than any other. Maps and text accompany the photos. Exquisite presentation. Part of the A Day in the Life series. Oversized.
