The Nature of Mathematical Modeling (Cambridge Series on Information and the Natural Sciences)

Gershenfeld, Neil
This book first covers exact and approximate analytical techniques (ordinary differential and difference equations, partial differential equations, variational principles, stochastic processes); numerical methods (finite differences for ODE's and PDE's, finite elements, cellular automata); model inference based on observations (function fitting, data transforms, network architectures, search techniques, density estimation); as well as the special role of time in modeling (filtering and state estimation, hidden Markov processes, linear and nonlinear time series). Each of the topics in the book would be the worthy subject of a dedicated text, but only by presenting the material in this way is it possible to make so much material accessible to so many people. Each chapter presents a concise summary of the core results in an area, providing an orientation to what they can (and cannot) do, enough background to use them to solve typical problems, and pointers to access the literature for particular applications.

Stochastic Processes

Joseph L. Doob
The theory of stochastic processes has developed so much in the last twenty years that the need for a systematic account of the subject has been felt, particularly by students and instructors of probability. This book fills that need. While even elementary definitions and theorems are stated in detail, this is not recommended as a first text in probability and there has been no compromise with the mathematics of probability. Since readers complained that omission of certain mathematical detail increased the obscurity of the subject, the text contains various mathematical points that might otherwise seem extraneous. A supplement includes a treatment of the various aspects of measure theory. A chapter on the specialized problem of prediction theory has also been included and references to the literature and historical remarks have been collected in the Appendix.

Strategic interaction

Goffman, Erving
The two essays in this classic work by sociologist Erving Goffman deal with the calculative, gamelike aspects of human interaction. Goffman examines the strategy of words and deeds; he uses the term "strategic interaction" to describe gamelike events in which an individual's situation is fully dependent on the move of one's opponent and in which both players know this and have the wit to use this awareness for advantage. Goffman aims to show that strategic interaction can be isolated analytically from the general study of communication and face-to-face interaction. The first essay addresses expression games, in which a participant spars to discover the value of information given openly or unwittingly by another. The author uses vivid examples from espionage literature and high-level political intrigue to show how people mislead one another in the information game. Both observer and observed create evidence that is false and uncover evidence that is real. In "Strategic Interaction," the book's second essay, action is the central concern, and expression games are secondary. Goffman makes clear that often, when it seems that an opponent sets off a course of action through verbal communication, he really has a finger on your trigger, your chips on the table, or your check in his bank. Communication may reinforce conduct, but in the end, action speaks louder. Those who gamble with their wits, and those who study those who do, will find this analysis important and stimulating.

Imagining numbers (particularly the square root of minus fifteen)

Mazur, B.
How do we imagine the unimaginable? If we're asked to think of an object - say, a yellow tulip - a picture immediately forms in our mind's eye. But what if we try to imagine a concept such as the square root of a negative number? It sounds impossible, yet as this enchanting, quizzical and evocative book shows, the art of mathematical imagining is not as mysterious as it seems. Drawing on poetry, literature and philosophy, Barry Mazur shows how we can all make the leap of imagination in order to start visualizing the enigmatic 'imaginary numbers' that first baffled mathematicians in the sixteenth century - and are now seen as the bedrock of the universe.

The education of T.C. MITS: what modern mathematics means to you

Lieber, Lillian Rosanoff
"A delightful book."— New York Times "I have studied with pleasure [this] new book…Beautiful examples…Illuminating. I am convinced that [Lieber's] original enterprise will get the recognition it so richly deserves."—Albert Einstein "The Liebers have written an ingenious, entertaining, and illuminating book."— Saturday Review of Literature "The book should be 'required reading' especially for non-mathematicians." —E.T. Bell, author of The Development of Mathematics First published in 1942, this whimsical exploration of how to think in a mathematical mood continues to delight math-lovers of all ages. Do you know that two times two is not always four; that the sum of the angles in a triangle does not always equal 180°; that sometimes it is possible to draw two parallel lines through the same point? In The Education of T. C. MITS , Lillian Lieber opens the door to the wonder of mathematical thinking and its application to everyday life. Lieber uses simple language and fanciful illustrations drawn by her husband, Hugh, to present fundamental mathematical concepts with a deft touch. The new foreword by Harvard University mathematics professor Barry Mazur is a tribute to the Liebers' influence on generations of mathematicians.

Information, entropy, life, and the universe: what we know and what we do not know

Ben-Naim, Arieh
The aim of this book is to explain in simple language what we know and what we do not know about information and entropy two of the most frequently discussed topics in recent literature and whether they are relevant to life and the entire universe. Entropy is commonly interpreted as a measure of disorder. This interpretation has caused a great amount of "disorder" in the literature. One of the aims of this book is to put some "order" in this "disorder." The book explains with minimum amount of mathematics what information theory is and how it is related to thermodynamic entropy. Then it critically examines the application of these concepts to the question of "What is life?" and whether or not they can be applied to the entire universe.

Topology of 4-manifolds

Freedman, Michael H.,Quinn, Frank
One of the great achievements of contemporary mathematics is the new understanding of four dimensions. Michael Freedman and Frank Quinn have been the principals in the geometric and topological development of this subject, proving the Poincar and Annulus conjectures respectively. Recognition for this work includes the award of the Fields Medal of the International Congress of Mathematicians to Freedman in 1986. In Topology of 4-Manifolds these authors have collaborated to give a complete and accessible account of the current state of knowledge in this field. The basic material has been considerably simplified from the original publications, and should be accessible to most graduate students. The advanced material goes well beyond the literature; nearly one-third of the book is new. This work is indispensable for any topologist whose work includes four dimensions. It is a valuable reference for geometers and physicists who need an awareness of the topological side of the field.Originally published in 1990.The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. Representation Theory and Complex Geometry

Ginzburg, Victor
see attached] This second edition of {it Representation Theory and Complex Geometry} provides an overview of significant advances in representation theory from a geometric standpoint. A geometrically-oriented treatment has long been desired, especially since the discovery of { l D}-modules in the early '80s and the quiver approach to quantum groups in the early '90s. The first half of the book fills the gap between the standard knowledge of a beginner in Lie theory and the much wider background needed by the working mathematician. Thus, Chapters 1-3 and 5-6 provide some basics in symplectic geometry, Borel--Moore homology, the geometry of semisimple groups, equivariant algebraic K-theory "from scratch," and the topology and algebraic geometry of flag varieties and conjugacy classes, respectively. The material covered by Chapters 5 and 6, as well as most of Chapter 3, has never been presented in book form. Chapters 3-4 and 7-8 present a uniform approach to representation theory of three quite different Weyl groups, Lie algebra sln, and the Iwahori--Hecke algebra. The results of Chapters 4 and 8, with complete proofs are not to be found elsewhere in the literature. This second edition contains substantial updates and revisions to include more standard classical results in chapters 2, 3, 5, and 6 as well as two new chapters. Chapter 9 treats the applications of { l D}-modules to Lie groups, and includes the study of * Differential operators on a semisimple group and on its flag manifold; * the famous Beilinson--Bernstein Localization Theorem reducing the study of {it g}-modules to that of { l D} modules; * the so-called Harish--Chandra holonomic system. Chapter 10 isdevoted to some very exciting developments connecting the representations of quantum groups to the geometry of "quiver varieties," introduced by Lusztig and Nakajima. The subject is closely related to many other important topics such as the McKay correspondence, semismall resolutions and Hilbert schemes. Overall, this chapter puts the representation theory of Kac--Moody algebras and quantum groups in this broader context. The exposition is practically self-contained with each chapter potentially serving as a basis for a graduate course or seminar. An excellent glossary of notation, comprehensive bibliography and extensive index round out this new edition. The techniques developed here play an essential role in the development of the Langlands program and can be successfully applied to representation theory, quantum groups and quantum field theory, affine Lie algebras, algebraic geometry, and mathematical physics.
