A Theory of Human Motivation (Hardcover Library Edition)

Abraham H. Maslow
First published in 1943, 'A Theory of Human Motivation' is an article by Abraham H. Maslow, an American psychologist, in which he first introduced his hierarchy of needs, a theory of psychological health predicated on fulfilling inherent human needs in preference, pinnacling in self-actualization. Maslow thereafter expanded the idea to include his observations of humans' inherent curiosity. His theories parallel many other theories of human developmental psychology, some of which concentrate on describing the stages of growth in humans. Maslow explained various needs and used the terms Physiological, Safety, Belongingness, Love, Esteem, Self-Actualization, and Self-Transcendence to define the pattern that human motivations generally move through. Maslow studied what he called ideal people such as Albert Einstein, Jane Addams, Eleanor Roosevelt, and Frederick Douglass rather than mentally sick or unstable people. Group Psychology and the Analysis of the Ego

*Sigmund Freud
In Group Psychology and the Analysis of the Ego , Freud explores theories on group dynamics and how psycho-sociological forces shape personality. He argues that an individual derives security from being part of a group, what he terms 'the Herd Instinct.' However, this feeling of belonging leads to a loss of the individual's consciousness. Other topics covered include Being in Love, Suggestion and Libido, and Identification. This new 2018 edition of Group Psychology and The Analysis of The Ego is a revised translation of the James Strachey version, in modern American English.

What Life Could Mean to You

Alfred Adler
Rather than purporting to know life's meaning, Adler set out in What Life Could Mean to You to help each of us create our own meaning for our life. He examines a wide range of themes common to all our lives, including family and school influences; adolescent development; feelings of superiority and inferiority; the importance of cooperation; the "problems of work, friendship, and love and marriage; and the individual and society. Through a fuller understanding of these areas of life and the value of each person, Adler shows how to overcome the limitations of our past and develop the courage and confidence to transform ourselves--and the world in which we live. "We must make our own lives," Adler writes. "It is our own task and we are capable of performing it. If something new must be done or something old replaced, no one can do it but ourselves. If life is approached in this way, as a cooperation of independent human beings, there are no limits to the progress of our human civilization." A contemporary of Carl Jung and Sigmund Freud, Alfred Adler was born in a Vienna suburb to a Jewish grain merchant. After becoming a medical doctor, Adler went on to found Individual Psychology and write more than 300 books and papers on child psychology, marriage, education, and the principles of individual psychology. Adler died in 1937 and is recognized along with Freud and Jung as one of the three great fathers of modern psychotherapy. The Adler Collection is also available to you which includes What Life Could Mean To You as well as the following two publications: Understanding Life which is an inspiring work that offers direction and wise counsel for increasing awareness of self, one's motivations, and the importance of each person's unique contribution to society; and Understanding Human Nature which is as relevant today as when written, this timely reprint of a classic in individual psychology shows the way to increased understanding of ourselves and our role in society.

The Heart of Man

Erich Fromm
This book is a counterpart to the classic The Art of Loving. Whereas the main topic there was man's capacity to love, the main topic here is his capacity to destroy, his narcissism, and his incestuous fixations. Whereas the topic of non-love fills most of these pages, the problem of love is taken up in a new and broader sense, namely, the love of life. The love of life, independence, and the overcoming of narcissism form "a syndrome of growth" against "a syndrome of decay" formed by love of death and malignant narcissism.

The Long Journey Home Re-Visioning the Myth of Demeter and Persephone for Our Time

Christine Downing
The story of the mother-and-daughter goddesses Demeter and Persephone has seized the imagination of people in every age, from ancient times to the present. Considered today by many to be the archetypal myth for women, it touches on timeless themes in every life, such as the male-female relationship, love between women, initiations into puberty and old age, the mother-daughter bond, death, and ecological renewal. Christine Downing has combined essays, prose, poetry, and even performance art with her own insightful commentary to shed new light on the myth's ancient meanings and to offer new insights in its implications for contemporary men and women.

Love, Sex, and Your Heart

Alexander Lowen
Love, Sex, and Your Heart elucidates how emotional life and physical being are one, mutually reflective as two sides of a coin. Emotional life is tied to physical being and physical health is dependent on emotional well-being. Alexander Lowen's insight into these powerful connections offers an innovative approach to cardiovascular health and the treatment of heart disease. Lowen examines the feeling of love as a physiological process in the body. When this process is frustrated, as in the case of heartbreak or isolation, especially during childhood, people suppress their pain by unconsciously rigidifying their chest muscles. This results in a chronic restriction of breathing, movement, and feeling. It is this tension that limits pleasure, and predisposes so many to heart disease. This book features the principles and therapeutic techniques to help people understand their fear of love, release chronic muscular tension, and become more loving. It is essential reading for health professionals and anyone interested in the health of the heart.

Renaissance Man

Ágnes Heller
Considering such witnesses of the time as Shakespeare, Dante, Petrarch, Michelangelo, Machiavelli, Montaigne, More and Bacon, Agnes Heller looks at both the concept and the image of a Renaissance man. The concept was generalised and accepted by all; its characteristic features were man as a dynamic being, creating and re-creating himself throughout his life. The images of man, however, were very different, having been formed through the ideas and imagination of artists, politicians, philosophers, scientists and theologians and viewed from the different aspects of work, love, fate, death, friendship, devotion and the concepts of space and time. Renaissance Man thus stood as both as a leading protagonist of his time, one who led and formulated the substantial attitudes of his time, and as one who stood as a witness on the sidelines of the discussion. This book, first published in English in 1978, is based on the diverse but equally important sources of autobiographies, works of art and literature, and the writings of philosophers. Although she uses Florence as a starting point, Agnes Heller points out that the Renaissance was a social and cultural phenomenon common to all of Western Europe; her Renaissance Man is thus a figure to be found throughout Europe.

Exuberance

Paul Kurtz
Happiness is within everyone's grasp and is only a matter of making the right choices. Taking destiny into one's own hands and having the creative audacity to strive, seek, and meet challenges is the essence of life's drama and exaltation. Life per se has no meaning; it only presents opportunity to be seized and acted upon, thus paving the way for personal achievement and the full life.Paul Kurtz, in Exuberance, shows his readers how to banish drudgery from life and how to find happiness in the active life. Drawing upon his personal experience, knowledge, and success, Kurtz explains his philosophy of life, discussing learning and work, pleasure, eroticism and sexuality, morality, the need for love and friendship, and participation in contemporary issues. He suggests that self-power, resourcefulness, daring, creativity, and intelligence help guide and control one's life in spite of the many obstacles along the way. Only the individual can initiate his own success and therefore can take pride in accomplishing what he sets out to do.Exuberance also shows the reader how to cope with an ambiguous world. Life is charged with unexpected events and bizarre happenings. It is filled with richly diverse and idiosyncratic characters. Constant effort and exertion is needed in making a living, meeting new friends, falling in love, raising children, seeing projects through, and coming to terms with old age and death. Dealing with these problems directly rather than fleeing from life's risks reinforces a person and leads him towards an exuberant, rich, zestful life.According to Dr. Kurtz, the fulfillment of one's own purpose is in creating one's own ends and expending the power and energy to attain them. Thus, life's great sin, he suggests, is being lazy and noncreative.

Toward a new enlightenment: the philosophy of Paul Kurtz

Paul Kurtz
Paul Kurtz has been the dominant voice of secular humanism over the past thirty years. This compilation of his work reveals the scope of his thinking on the basic topics of our time and his many and varied contributions to the cause of free thought. It focuses on the central issues that have concerned Kurtz throughout his career: ethics, politics, education, religion, science, and pseudoscience. The chapters are linked by a common theme: the need for a new enlightenment, one committed to the use of rationality and skepticism, but also devoted to realizing the highest values of humanist culture. Many writings included here were first published in magazines and journals long unavailable. Some of the essays have never before been published. They now appear as a coherent whole for the first time. Also included is an extensive bibliography of Kurtz's writings. Toward a New Enlightenment is essential for those who know and admire Paul Kurtz's work. It will also be an important resource for students of philosophy, political science, ethics, and religion. Among the chapters are: "Humanist Ethics: Eating the Forbidden Fruit"; "Relevance of Science to Ethics"; "Democracy without Theology"; "Misuses of Civil Disobedience"; "The Limits of Tolerance"; "Skepticism about the Paranormal: Legitimate and Illegitimate"; "Militant Atheism vs. Freedom of Conscience"; "Promethean Love: Unbound"; "The Case for Euthanasia"; and "The New Inquisition in the Schools."

Presence and Immortality

Gabriel Marcel
Presence and Immortality brings Marce's philosophy to light as a search, “a finding one’s way,” an endeavor which achieves a profound unity despite the seemingly haphazard nature of its process. The diary excerpts—Metaphysical Journals—offer a broad overview of the central features of Marcel’s thought and serve as the backdrop for the title essay, which takes up a problem central to the human experience: the death of a loved one. The volume’s concluding element, the unfinished play entitled The Unfathomable, emphasizes the profound connection between drama and philosophy in the mind of Marcel. Through its series of introspective, impressionistic reflections on life and death, Presence and Immortality offers significant insight into the multiform themes and variations of Marcel’s philosophy.

The Selected Papers of Arnold Goldberg, MD Forward and with Introductions by Gavin Mullen, PsyD

Arnold Goldberg
Many people lead multi faceted lives. Arnold Goldberg is one of these. He is a psychiatrist, a psychoanalyst, a teacher, a supervisor, an editor, and an author. He was Director of the Chicago Institute for Psychoanalysis, editor of the journal Progress in Self Psychology and is famous for having begun his career as Heinz Kohut's most original student and later his closest colleague. After Kohut died Goldberg finished How Does Analysis Cure? His writings are incredibly wide ranging, his interest in all things psychoanalytic breathtaking as the selections in this book testify. I especially love his work on Behavior Disorders not simply because I was fortunate enough to write for the Case Book he edited on the subject, but because his ideas changed forever my thinking on acting out patients and transformed my clinical results with them. Kohut may have originated the idea of the vertical split in self psychology, but Goldberg has taken the idea to places no other self psychologist has gone.

Love and Work The Value System of Psychoanalysis

Reuben Fine
Product description Book by Fine, Reuben From Publishers Weekly Proposing that "psychoanalysis is a theory of happiness ," more philosophy than science, Fine ( The Intimate Hour ) documents and explains the pervasive presence of analytic tenets, ideas and values current in global society. His stance as apologist ("Generally people nowadays approach Freud with a negative transference") is evident in his views on homosexuality, in his opposition to the "remedicalization" of psychiatry and his support of non-medical analysts. Chapters on love distinguish romantic infatuation from "normal" or "mature" love; others attempt to approach changing views of sexuality and job satisfaction, including the move of women into the marketplace, from a historical perspective. While the study is valuable in its documentation of psychoanalysis's growth and development, Fine's overview of today's society seems scattershot, dated, arbitrary and occasionally unreliable, as in his interpretation of Erica Jong's phrase "zipless fuck." Feeling Matters

Eigen, Michael
As long as feelings are second-class citizens, people will be second class citizens. Experience is an endangered species. An important function of psychotherapy is to make time for experiencing. Psychic taste buds really exist and rarely rest. They feed us each other, gauge states of being, states of spirit. We taste each other's feelings and intentions. An important aim of this book is to build psychic taste buds, not put them down or pretend they don't exist. A positive feeling runs through this book, a love of life, an affirmation. Yet we discover many feel they do not have an impact. A sense of helplessness and impotence in face of awesome forces seems to be increasing. Health is a broad term with many dark threads. A creeping annihilating sense varies from pockets we try not to notice to soul murder that must be addressed. Yet individuals do try, in their private struggles and in the larger social sphere.
