Edmond

David Mamet
'The first single-volume edition of this stunning early Mamet play. You know how much of our life we''re alive, you and me. Nothing. Two minutes out of the year. When we meet someone new, when we get married, when, when, when, when we''re in difficulties. once in our life at the death of someone that we love. That''s. in a carcrash. and that''s it. You know, you know, we''re sheltered. A fortune-teller''s teasing rumination sends Edmond lurching into New York City''s hellish underworld, his whole life abandoned in a searing quest for self-discovery and redemption. A furious, unflinching, whirlwind of a play first produced in 1982. ''A stunning amorality play, glittering and disturbing, suspended in the dark void of contemporary New York. It is also a technically adventurous piece pared brilliantly to the bone, highly theatrical in its scenic elisions'' Financial Times. ''A riveting theatrical experience that illuminates the heart of darknes''s Newsweek. Publication of this edition ties in with a production in July 2003 at the Royal National Theatre starring Kenneth Branagh.'

The Apartment An Original Screenplay, Directed by Billy Wilder

Billy Wilder,A A Diamond,I. A. Diamond
Billy Wilder won two Oscars - as co-screenwriter and director - for this mordant comedy about getting ahead in the corporate world. Jack Lemmon played the 'schnook' who lends out his apartment for his boss's sexual trysts, only to fall in love with the boss's girl - played by Shirley MacLaine. The Apartment is a beautifully judged piece of writing saved from cynicism by Wilder and Diamond's tenderness towards their central characters.

Welcome to the dollhouse

Solondz, Todd
Welcome to the Dollhouse is a stark suburban comedy about eleven-year-old Dawn Wiener, a middle child in middle school in the middle of New Jersey. Sometimes hated, often reviled, seldom understood, Dawn tries in vain to put on a happy face as she struggles through the onset of what looks to be a long puberty. Life is generally grim, and sometimes it only gets grimmer. Nevertheless, she does find moments of grace amidst the humiliation of her first series of frustrated love affairs, and soon Dawn begins to wonder if life might not be better outside New Jersey.

In Good Company

PAUL WEITZ
This latest film from the Oscar-nominated screenwriter of About a Boy is a dramatic comedy about the relationship between a 51-year-old sales executive and his new, 26-year-old boss. Both men are going through turmoil at home. The elder one, Dan Foreman (Dennis Quaid), already has two teenage daughters, which makes him liable to shock at being told his wife is pregnant. What with college fees, the mortgage and a new baby, Dan can't afford to lose his job. Meanwhile his upstart new boss, Carter Duryea (Topher Grace), is dumped by his wife just as he gets his promotion. He then falls in love with Dan's elder daughter (played by Scarlett Johansson)...In Good Company allows Paul Weitz plenty of scope for the droll appreciation of life's ironies which he showed to such good effect in About a Boy. The NHB Shooting Script is the official tie-in with this major release and Oscar-contender from Universal Pictures. As well as the full screenplay, it contains Paul Weitz's introduction and notes by the film-makers, plus sixteen stills, and complete cast and crew credits.

Trelawny Of The Wells

Arthur Wing Pinero
NOTE: -Bagnlgge (locally pronounced Bagnidge) Wells, formerly a popular mineral spring in Islington, London, situated not far from the better remembered Sadler's-Wells. The gardens of Bagnlgge-Wells were at one time much resorted to; but, as a matter of fact, Bagnigge-Wells, unlike Sadler's-Wells, has never possessed a playhouse. Sadler's-Wells Theatre, however, always familiarly known as the "Wells," still exists. It was rebuilt in 1876-77. The costumes and scenic decoration of this little play-should follow, to the closest detail, the mode of the early Sixties, the period, in dress, of crinoline and the peg-top trouser; in furniture, of horsehair and mahogany, and the abominable "walnut -and -rep." No attempt should be made to modify such fashions in illustration, to render them less strange, even less grotesque, to the modern eye. On the contrary, there should be an endeavor to reproduce, perhaps to accentuate, any feature which may now seem particularly quaint and bizarre. Thus, lovely youth should be shown decked uncompromisingly as it was at the time indicated, at the risk (which the author believes to be a slight one) of pointing the chastening moral that, while beauty fades assuredly in its own time, it may appear to succeeding generations not to have been beauty at all.

Bruckner's Pains of youth

Bruckner, Ferdinand
"You could do insane twenty-hour shifts in theatre. You could be mother of ten children. You could be toughest whore on the block. You contain all possibilities. You are the ultimate cliche of a young woman's incredible potential." "Promiscuous, pitiless and bored, six sexually entangled medical students restlessly wander in and out of a boarding house, cramming, drinking, taunting, spying. Freder sets about savagely experimenting with the young, pretty maid with half an eye on his former lover Desiree, a wild, disillusioned aristocrat. Petrell abandons Marie for the ruthless underdog Irene. Marie doesn't waste any time weeping - Desiree wants her." "Bourgeois existence or suicide. There are no other choices." "Vienna, 1923. A discontented post-war generation diagnose youth to be their sickness and do their best to destroy it." "Ferdinand Bruckner's Pains of Youth, in a version by Martin Crimp, premiered at the National Theatre, London, in November 2009." --Book Jacket.
