Homeland security: an introduction

Givens, Austen D.,Busch, Nathan E.,Bersin, Alan Douglas
"This textbook will deliver a comprehensive, systematic introduction to homeland security today, including its conceptual foundations, legal underpinnings, historical evolution, constituent federal agencies, emerging technologies, and linkages to businesses, non-profits, civic groups, and individual citizens. Throughout the course of the book, particular emphasis will be placed on three paradigm shifts in homeland security: the new role of so-called "big data" analytics for risk assessment in homeland security decision-making; emerging understandings of the "homeland security enterprise," a term used by practitioners to describe whole-of-government efforts to manage natural and man-made threats; and the growing recognition of how international affairs can influence and shape domestic security considerations. The authors are all experts in homeland security and have published widely on the subject. In addition, the authors bring to bear on this project a compelling blend of academic and practitioner experience that will help this book to stand out among its competitors in the marketplace. Two of the authors (Busch and Givens) co-authored the 2014 book The Business of Counterterrorism: Public-Private Partnerships in Homeland Security. Alan Bers in has worked at the highest levels of the federal government, most recently as Assistant Secretary of International Affairs and Chief Diplomatic Officer at the OHS, and previously as Commissioner of U.S. Customs and Border Protection. Their combined expertise means that this project will benefit from both a rigorous scholarly approach and a compelling first-hand view of the federal government's inner workings from a former senior leader in the OHS. This project can be distinguished from other comparable textbooks, including those that focus upon specific sub-fields of homeland security. Some of these books offer introductions to homeland security but include little in the way of unifying themes or trends transcending the sub-fields of homeland security. Other books address specific problems in homeland security, such as terrorism or emergency management, and use these problems as starting points for broader discussions of government organizations involved in homeland security"--

Bone stress injuries: diagnosis, treatment, and prevention

Adam S. Tenforde,Michael Fredericson
"This book gives a nice summary of the current state of diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of bone stress injuries. It is particularly useful for sports medicine fellows and residents with an interest in athletes and activepatients." ---Doody's Review Service, 3 stars Bone stress injuries are commonly seen in athletes and active individuals across a full spectrum of physical activity, age, and gender. While most overuse injuries can be addressed through non-operative care, injuries may progress to full fractures that require surgery if misdiagnosed or not correctly managed. Written by leaders in sports medicine including physical medicine and rehabilitation, orthopaedics, endocrinology and allied health professionals of biomechanics, physical therapy and dietetics, Bone Stress Injuries offers state-of-the-art guidelines and up-to-date science and terminology to practitioners. Using a holistic approach to understand the management of bone stress injuries, this book highlights specific considerations by injury, gender, and risk factor to ensure that a comprehensive treatment plan can be developed to optimize bone health, neuromuscular re-education, gait mechanics, and injury prevention. Organized into four parts, opening chapters cover the general need-to-know topics, including clinical history, imaging, and risk factors including biological and biomechanical factors. The book proceeds anatomically through the body from upper extremity to foot and ankle injuries, with each chapter underscoring diagnostic and treatment strategies specific to that region. Chapters dedicated to special populations discuss the differences in injury evaluation and management according to age, gender, and military background. Final chapters review the prevention of injuries and examine both common and novel treatment strategies, such as medications, nutrition, gait retraining, orthobiologics, and other interventions. Invaluable in its scope and approach, Bone Stress Injuries is the go-to resource for sports medicine physicians, physiatrists, and primary care providers who manage the care of athletes and individuals leading active lifestyles. The war game: studies of the new civilian militarists

Horowitz, Irving Louis
War gaming has become a characteristic feature of modern life. From amateur clubs to professional academicians playing the war game in the company of military circles, we have come up against the phenomenon of the "robotization" of human life. Irving Louis Horowitz argues that those who protest the idea that war is a game do so on moral grounds that leave unanswered tough questions: What is the alternative to playing the game? What will become of us if we allow the opponent to become the better "player" in an all-or-nothing game of extinction? Horowitz provides answers in a logical manner while focusing on facts and ethical alternatives to risky ethics. The work is divided into three sections: The New Civilian Militarists, Thermonuclear Peace and Its Political Equivalents, and General Theory of Conflict and Conflict Resolution. Included are such topics as arms, policies, and games; morals, missiles, and militarism; and conflict, consensus, and cooperation. Horowitz concludes that it is time to register the fact that the basic option to destructive uses of science is not traditional morality, but better science--a science of survival. With a new introduction by Howard Schneiderman along with a major essay and other materials not included in the original edition, this classic work is a worthy contribution to intellectual debate in the twenty-first century and a must read for military strategists, sociologists, and historians.
