Principles of Mathematical Analysis Textbook by Walter Rudin

Walter Rudin
The third edition of this well known text continues to provide a solid foundation in mathematical analysis for undergraduate and first-year graduate students. The text begins with a discussion of the real number system as a complete ordered field. (Dedekind's construction is now treated in an appendix to Chapter I.) The topological background needed for the development of convergence, continuity, differentiation and integration is provided in Chapter 2. There is a new section on the gamma function, and many new and interesting exercises are included. This text is part of the Walter Rudin Student Series in Advanced Mathematics.

FUNCTIONAL ANALYSIS by Walter Rudin

Walter Rudins
Functional analysis is the study of certain topological-algebraic structures and of the methods by which knowledge of these structures can be applied to analytic problems. A good introductory text on this subject should include a presentation of its axiomatics (i.e., of the general theory of topological vector spaces), it should treat at least a few topics in some depth, and it should contain some interesting applications to other branches of mathematics. I hope that the present book meets these criteria. The subject is huge and is growing rapidly. (The bibliography in volume I of [4] contains 96 pages and goes only to 1957.) In order to write a book of moderate size, it was therefore necessary to select certain areas and to ignore others. I fully realize that almost any expert who looks at the table of contents will find that some of his or her (and my) favorite topics are missing, but this seems unavoidable. It was not my intention to write an encyclopedic treatise. I wanted to write a book that would open the way to further exploration. This is the reason for omitting many of the more esoteric topics that might have been included in the presentation of the general theory of topo-logical vector spaces. For instance, there is no discussion of uniform spaces, of Moore-Smith convergence, of nets, or of filters. The notion of complete-ness occurs only in the context of metric spaces. Bornological spaces are not mentioned, nor are barreled ones. Duality is of course presented, but not in its utmost generality. Integration of vector-valued functions is treated strictly as a tool; attention is confined to continuous integrands, with values in a Frechet space. Nevertheless, the material of Part I is fully adequate for almost all applications to concrete problems. And this is what ought to be stressed in such a course:

Statistics of Extremes

E. J. Gumbel
Indisputably recognized as a classic in its field, Statistics of Extremes was the first book to exclusively evaluate the relevance of maximum and minimum (extreme) values. More than fifty years after publication, it remains relevant and helpful to the contemporary work of statisticians, engineers, and scientists. In this far-sighted and important work, Gumbel explains the applications of statistical extremes and reinforces its main ideas with generalized exercises. Key topics in this book include: Aims and tools Order statistics and their exceedances Exact distribution of extremes Analytical study of extremes First asymptotic distribution Uses of the first, second, and third asymptotes Range To remain relevant to a wide audience of statisticians, Professor Gumbel relies on elementary language to convey highly technical concepts. With 47 tables and 97 graphs, the focus is on graphical procedures rather than calculations. Gumbel's original research in the 1940s was developed to predict natural disasters, but as he further refined his theory and tools of extreme statistics, it became clear it has applications in numerous fields.

One, Two, Three Absolutely Elementary Mathematics

David Berlinski
The acclaimed author of A Tour of the Calculus and The Infinite Ascent offers an enlightening and enthralling tour of the basics of mathematics, and reveals a world of fascination in fundamental mathematical ideas. One, Two, Three is David Berlinski’s captivating exploration of the foundation of mathematics, its fundamental ideas, and why they matter. By unraveling the complex answers to these most elementary questions—What is a number? How do addition, subtraction, and other functions actually work? What are geometry and logic?—Berlinski reveals the intricacy behind their seemingly simple exteriors. Peppered with enlightening historical anecdotes and asides on some of history’s most fascinating mathematicians, One, Two, Three, revels in the beauty of numbers as Berlinski shows us how and why these often slippery concepts are as essential to the field of mathematics as to who we are.

Logic as Algebra

Paul Halmos,Steven Givant
Here is an introduction to modern logic that differs from others by treating logic from an algebraic perspective. What this means is that notions and results from logic become much easier to understand when seen from a familiar standpoint of algebra. The presentation, written in the engaging and provocative style that is the hallmark of Paul Halmos, from whose course the book is taken, is aimed at a broad audience, students, teachers and amateurs in mathematics, philosophy, computer science, linguistics and engineering; they all have to get to grips with logic at some stage. All that is needed to understand the book is some basic acquaintance with algebra.

Take A Number Mathematics For The Two Billion

Lillian Rosanoff Lieber
Take A Number: Mathematics For The Two Billion is a book written by Lillian Rosanoff Lieber that explores the importance of mathematics in our daily lives. The book focuses on the idea that mathematics is not just a subject to be studied in school, but a fundamental tool that everyone needs to navigate the world around them. Lieber argues that there are two billion people in the world who lack basic mathematical skills, and this has serious consequences for their ability to make informed decisions, manage their finances, and participate fully in society. She uses real-life examples to illustrate how math is used in everything from cooking and shopping to medicine and engineering. The book is divided into three sections. The first section provides an overview of the importance of mathematics and its role in our lives. The second section focuses on basic mathematical concepts, such as fractions, decimals, and percentages, and how they are used in everyday situations. The third section delves into more advanced topics, such as algebra, geometry, and calculus, and their applications in fields like science and technology.Throughout the book, Lieber emphasizes the importance of understanding math and encourages readers to develop their skills through practice and exploration. She also provides tips and strategies for overcoming math anxiety and building confidence in one's abilities.Overall, Take A Number: Mathematics For The Two Billion is a compelling and informative book that highlights the critical role of mathematics in our lives and the need for everyone to have basic math skills. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. One Hand at a Time

Patricia E. Smith
Many elementary teachers who have taught time-telling skills would propose that the mathematical skills associated with time-telling are among the most difficult for young students to learn. This booklet was developed to relate some of the concepts of time to physical models, providing methods for isolating specific time-telling concepts within a concrete framework. The time-telling of each hand of the clock is presented separately, with the major focus on using the hour hand. The booklet contains stories, activities, games, bulletin board ideas, and worksheets designed to accommodate a range of teaching and learning styles. Many of the activities in the booklet's seven sections are also designed to help integrate mathematics with other areas of the elementary school curriculum, such as social studies, language arts, and science. Reproducible worksheets and blackline masters are included in the back of the book. (TW)
