In my time of dying: how I came face to face with the idea of an afterlife
''Mind blowingly brilliant'' PHILIPPA PERRY''Few other writers have such passion for granular detail, intellectual heft and boundless curiosity'' THE TIMES''As suspenseful and pacy as an episode of peak-era ER'' GUARDIANA near-fatal health emergency leads to this powerful reflection on death―and what might follow―by the bestselling author of Tribe and The Perfect Storm. For years as an award-winning war reporter, Sebastian Junger travelled to many front lines and frequently put his life at risk. And yet the closest he ever came to death was the summer of 2020 while spending a quiet afternoon at the New England home he shared with his wife and two young children. Crippled by abdominal pain, Junger was rushed to the hospital by ambulance. Once there, he began slipping away. As blackness encroached, he was visited by his dead father, inviting Junger to join him. “It’s okay,” his father said. “There’s nothing to be scared of. I’ll take care of you.” That was the last thing Junger remembered until he came to the next day when he was told he had suffered a ruptured aneurysm that he should not have survived. This experience spurred Junger―a confirmed atheist raised by his physicist father to respect the empirical―to undertake a scientific, philosophical, and deeply personal examination of mortality and what happens after we die. How do we begin to process the brutal fact that any of us might perish unexpectedly on what begins as an ordinary day? How do we grapple with phenomena that science may be unable to explain? And what happens to a person, emotionally and spiritually, when we are forced to reckon with such existential questions? In My Time of Dying is part medical drama, part searing autobiography, and part rational inquiry into the ultimate unknowable mystery.''Moving, compact, philosophically ambitious … A humbling volume'' OBSERVER‘Stunning … A powerful book that comes as close as anything I’ve read in explaining what it means to be human’ JAMES PATTERSON''An instant classic that filled me with wonder, gratitude and awe'' WILL SCHWALBE''A stunning account I didn’t so much read as inhale, awed and riveted and forever changed'' MICHAEL FINKEL
Peace of mind
In "Peace of Mind," Rabbi Liebman tries to present some answers that have proved helpful to him about the universal human dilemmas of conscience, love, fear, grief, and God - crucial problems that present themselves in every kind of society, and, he believes, will present themselves as long as man is man. Whether under capitalism, socialism, or communism, men and women will still face the purely personal and profoundly individual issues of life and death as well as the tangled interpersonal relations of parent and child, brother and sister, husband and wife. Personal experience plus rich and varied contacts in the author's ministry led him to believe that a book written by a religionist explaining just what modern psychology has discovered about human beings, why we sometimes hate ourselves and hate others, why we grow afraid, why we lose faith in life and in God, might be of real help to perplexed moderns. This science also tells us what we can do to change ourselves and our mental attitudes in relation to our own personalities and in interrelations with other human beings. "Peace of Mind" attempts to distill the helpful insights about human nature that psychology has discovered and the encouraging news from the scientific clinic about man's infinite capacity to change and improve himself, as well as to correlate these latest scientific discoveries with the truest religious insights and goals of the ages.

Karma and rebirth in classical indian traditions
Karma is perhaps the most famous concept in Indian philosophy, but this is the first comprehensive study of its various meanings and philosophical implications. Karma and Rebirth in Classical Indian Traditions offers a harmony of approach and an underlying set of methodological assumptions: a corpus of definitions of karma, a dialectic between abstract theory and historical explanation, and an awareness of logical oppositions in theories of karma. No “solution” to the paradox of karma is offered, but the volume as a whole presents a consistent and encompassing approach to the many different, often conflicting, Indian statements of the problem. Broad in scope and richly detailed, this book demonstrates the impossibility of speaking of “ the theory of karma” and supplies the basis for further study. Exploring methodological issues arising in the study of a non-Western system of soteriology and rebirth, the contributors question the interaction of medical and philosophical models of the human body, the incorporation of philosophical theories into practical religions with which they are logically incompatible, and the problem of historical reconstruction of a complex theory of human life. Hypnotism, Mesmerism and the New Witchcraft
Scientific papers which originally appeared in "The Nineteenth Century" and the "British Medical Journal" became more widely available when collected in this volume originally published in 1896. In the preface, the author expresses his hope that these papers "will serve a useful purpose in dissipating some popular errors and a good deal of pseudo-scientific superstition, superimposed on a slender basis of physiological and pathological phenomena. They may be of some use. also, in unmasking a prevalent system of imposture...." Hart's view of the emergence of hypnotism and mesmerism as alternative sciences, includes chapters on "Hypnotism, Animal Magnetism and Hysteria" and "Confessions of a Professional Medium." The appendix to this second edition includes sections on automatic writing, the "eternal gullible," as well as the hypnotism of Trilby. Illustrated throughout with black& white photographs and line-drawings.
