The Forging of the American Empire

Sidney Lens
This is the story of a nation--the United States--that has conducted more than 160 wars and other military ventures while insisting it loves peace. In the process, the US has forged a world empire while maintaining its innocence of imperialistic designs. From Mexico to Lebanon, from China to the Dominican Republic, from Nicaragua to Vietnam, the US has intervened regularly in the affairs of other nations. Yet the myth that Americans are benevolent, peace-lving people who will fight only to defend the rights of others lingers on. Excesses and cruelties, though sometimes admitted, usually are regarded as momentary aberrations. In this comprehensive history of American imperialism, Sidney Lens punctures the myth once and for all by showing how the US, from the time it gained its own independence, has used every available means--political, economic, and military--to dominate other peoples.

International Brigade Against Apartheid Secrets of the War That Liberated South Africa

Ronnie Kasrils
We hear for the first time from the internationalist secretly working for the ANCâ (TM)s armed wing, Umkhonto we Sizwe (MK), in the struggle to liberate South Africa from apartheid rule. They acted as couriers, provided safe houses in neighbouring states and within South Africa, helped infiltrate combatants across borders, and smuggled tons of weapons into the country in the most creative ways. Driven by a spirit of international solidarity, they were prepared to take huge risks and face great danger. The internationalists reveal what motivated them as volunteers, not mercenaries: they gained nothing for their endeavours save for the self-esteem in serving a just cause. Against such clandestine involvement, the book includes contributions from key people in the international Anti-Apartheid Movement and its public mobilisation to isolate the apartheid regime. These include worldwide campaigns like Stop the Sports Tours, boycotting of South African products and black American solidarity. The Cuban, East German and Russian contributions outlined those countriesâ (TM) support for the ANC and MK. The public, global Anti-Apartheid Movement campaigns provide the dimensions from which internationalists who secretly served MK emerged. Edited by Ronnie Kasrils. First published by Jacana Media (Pty) Ltd in 2021, ISBN: 978-1-4314-3202-8, this Daraja Press edition is available in North America and East Africa.

A History of Cuba and Its Relations with the United States, Vol 1 1492-1845 From the Conquest of Cuba to La Escalera

Philip Foner
This book begins with the conquest of Cuba by the Spanish Conquistadores, and the annihilation of the Indian population despite its heroic struggles. It then analyzes the economic social and cultural development of Cuba from 1520 to 1808. This is followed by an analysis of the role of Cuba in the Latin American wars for independence of 1808-1820 and the first independence movement in Cuba, 1820-1830. Dr. Foner then discusses the emergence of United States policy towards Cuba and shows, through the most careful documentation, the role played by the government of the United States in blocking the achievement of Cuban independence from Spain. The rest of the book deals with the reform movement in Cuba, Cuban slave society, and the anti-slavery struggles in the island, ending with La Escalera, the brutal suppression of the Negro people in the 1840's. For the preparation of this volume, Dr. Foner examined original sources in English and Spanish, in Cuba and the United States, and a wide range of monographic material produced by scholars in both countries. The result is this exciting and timely book.
